Summary:
Bobby & Warren are on Spring Break wandering New York City because Bobby forgot to buy plane tickets for them to an expensive resort Warren booked rooms for.

Warren mentions Wolverine went to Japan.

They visit what appears to be an art gallery/museum where they meet 2 young ladies, take the subway from the 42 St- Bryant Park station, have lunch at Jack's Bistro with them.

As they're walking along a street (after leaving the young ladies) they hear a loud noise and see a giant monster rising up out of the water (off the shore of Manhattan Island?). They decide to keep it busy until the Fantastic Four or Avengers show up. Both are swatted into the water as no threat to the massive creature.

They rethink their strategy. Bobby makes some humorous meta suggestions that it would be cool if Angel had metal wings which could shoot knives which somehow fit overtop his regular wings... (groan!) They manage to topple the monster and wonder where the FF, Avengers or the military are.

Panel showing Thor, Captain America, Iron Man, and Giant Man trapped in forcefield bubbles by Kang the Conqueror. The planet/moon they are on is barren and there is planet in the sky behind them.

Panel showing Mr. Fantastic, Invisible Woman, Thing, and Human Torch trapped by Annihilus in almost coffin-like metal restraints which cover them from the chest down.

Panel showing "the military" (3 tanks) ordering a dismayed Namor to "surrender" outside a bakery where he'd just bought bagels.

Angel & Iceman save some ungrateful, mutant-phobic New Yorkers from being squashed by chunks of falling building. Iceman realizes the monster seems to be looking for something and confronts it.

It introduces itself as "Goom, the Thing from Planet X" much to Iceman & Angel's bewilderment. Goom explains his translation device is having trouble with their "inelegant" language. Angel asks what he's looking for and Goom tells them he's looking for his son Googam. He mentions that he attempted to conquer Earth previously but others from his planet interfered. [Which appearance does this sound like? TOS 15?] He "left Googam to hatch in a cave" to conquer Earth in his place. [TOS 17?] Googam went to college instead. They wonder how that's possible as Goom is so massive. Goom explains they can change their size. He's looking for his son because Googam didn't make his weekly check-in call. Iceman & Angel tell Goom they'll help him find his missing son.

Spaceship trip to Empire State University. Bobby, Warren, and an almost human-sized Goom ask students where Googam is.

Spaceship trip to a beach in Cancun, Mexico... Googam is embarassed that Goom ruined his Spring Break. Goom transports Googam into ship while chastising him for not conquering Earth. Bobby & Warren are forgotten & left behind. They decide to make the best of it before calling Professor X.

Placement Notes:

1 Bobby & Warren are on Spring Break. (This implies they are either still @ Xavier's or in university. Angel wears his "X-Men: First Class" uniform.) [but probably post-CHAMP 17 & pre-DEF 122.]
2 They know Wolverine, and Angel mentions that he'd gone on a trip to Japan. [post-UX 94, possibly around the time Angel briefly rejoined the X-Men (UX 132-148)? Iceman finished a term paper and assisted the X-Men in UX 145-146. Reference to Wolverine: First Class series?]
3 The Avengers are trapped in forcefield bubbles by Kang on a barren moon/planet in space. (Giant Man is wearing a costume with antennae.) [help!]
4 The FF are trapped in metal boxes, by Annihilus. [help!]
5 Namor says he only came to the surface to buy bagels and says "Imperious Rex". (One can infer that he's king of Atlantis at this point.)

Does this conjunction of events exist?!?

The problem, as Hotcharokey 2.0 pointed out in the thread on the Marvel Universe forum, is that Hank only wore the antenna costume from A 2 to A 14. Even if we assume that the costume is an art error, Hank wasn't Giant-Man or Goliath after A 63 until long after Warren got his metal wings. Logan didn't join the X-Men until long after A 63.

They are trapped by KANG. The time-guy. Maybe Kang has pulled these Avengers from the past? True, the book is showing us this scene to explain where the Avengers *of that time period* are, but if this grouping can't exist in this timeframe, then maybe we can overlook that -- and assume that we're seeing the Kang from that timeframe gloating over the Avengers of yesteryear.

Iceman's "university years" took place between CHAMP 1 (Oct 1975) [but I'd place this after PPTSS 18 (May 1978)] and before DEF 122 (Aug 1983). For the Avengers that would be: A 171 to A 234 and for the Fantastic Four: FF 194 to FF 257.

Let's look at where the FF encountered Annihilus:
FF 181-183 (Apr 1977-June 1977) [probably too early. Angel & Iceman still in Champions]
M/TIO 75 (May 1981)
M/FAN 2/2 (May 1982)
FF 251-FF 254 (Feb 1983-May 1983)

Does any moment in these encounters vaguely resemble the panel of their capture?

Interestingly enough... the May 1981 issue of Uncanny X-Men is 145 which works very well!
The May 1982 issue of Uncanny X-Men is 157 which is during their space adventure vs the Brood, etc. which makes it an unlikely spot.
Feb-May 1983 is Uncanny X-Men 166-168 which is the conclusion of their space adventure vs Brood and they're back on Earth.

As for the Avengers, (discounting Dr. Pym who could have been time scooped by Kang from sometime between A 2 & A 14)
The June 1977 issue is A 160. Captain America, Iron Man, Thor and Pym are members. Problem is Angel & Iceman still in Champions.
The May 1981 issue is A 207. Captain America and Iron Man were members at that point so Thor could have been kidnapped by Kang separately.
The May 1982 issue of Avengers is 219. Captain America, Iron Man & Thor are members and in outer space dealing with Moondragon.
Feb 1983-May 1983 are Avengers 228-230. Captain America, Iron Man & Thor are members and Hank Pym is on trial.

Anyone want to narrow this down? Who knows the FF vs Annihilus stories really well?
