New York, 1953, Leonid is taken by agents Stark and Richards to Rome to an underground city where he meets the High Council of Shield.

flashback 2620 BC: Pharaoh Khasekemwy Khasekemui of the second dynasty goes to the crashing place of an alien ship. He is overcome by the Brood. Imhotep leads the fight and kills the Brood queen.

flashback 114 AD, Han Dynasty: Zhang Heng goes to meet a Celestial woman.

The council tells Leonid he must join them.

Three years later, Leonid meets his father, the Night Machine. Night Machine opens the door to a secret place and sends Leonid up the stairs. Night Machine keeps the door but is opposed by agents Richards and Stark. Up the stairs Leonid meets Leonardo in his flying machine.

Four short stories

1. Colossus
In 1497, Leonard's agents failed to recruit Michelangelo. He goes to teach to students of the Shield. In a flashback in 226 B.C. Archimedes defeats a Kree Sentry with the Colossus of Rhodes.

In 1806 Three men discover a hidden message, they penetrate the hidden city, find Nostradamus and report to the Forever Man

Forever Man saved Tesla. He is now the Machine. Later in Rome Nikola speaks with Leonid's mother. He tells of a journey to the Zargos mountain when he found three men (Magi?). She gives him a key for a door in the Immortal city, the first step on a path that must be followed by their son.

Note: This takes place just before Night Machine's appearance in #1

In 1707, Leibniz found out that Newton has been murdering other scientists--John Flamsteed (dies in flashback); Robert Hooke (dies in flashback); Blaise Pascal (dies in flashback); John Locke (dies in flashback) -- and has been waiting for him.

To end the war a judgment is to be given by Leonid between Newton and da Vinci. He chooses da Vinci and Newton flees. Meanwhile the Star Child goes mad.
