Wolverine costume in early appearances

Post by Leoparis »

I've been looking at the costumes. I provide comments, including on unreliable narrators.

Wolverine
AF 52 (7:4 - 9:5)-FB early dept H, Bedlam created
X3 14-FB early Trimpe costume (just before X 10, 1965)
SAVW 23
AF SPEC ca 1967, after X 23, Aug 66
M/CP 51-FB "1974" but Cockrum costume
AF 127/2-FB Wild Child, Cockrum costume
W2 9 (6 - 7)-FB-FB
W2 9-FB costume, no mask
M/GN:W/NF-FB
UX 228-FB-FB Cockrum costume
AF 9/2 recruits Aurora
W2 144-FB first in Trimpe costume, vs Leader
FCBD09:W (22) Hulk alert
W:O 28 (8 - 9&10)-FB --> (8)
M/CP 59-FB reviving Mimic
X 139-FB watching Hulk vs Wendigo behind a tree
{IH2 180} Oct 74
...
IH2 182 (3:5 - 17)
SMV.W (1 - 5)-FB costume w/o mask
AF 53-FB Bedlam defeated, Cockrum costume
AF2 1-FB Cockrum costume
W:O 28 (20)-FB
XO:W (17)
GSX 1 (5:1 - 5:3)

It seems stories involving Wolverine in Dept H have been listed with little regard to costume evolution (unless there are factors I don't know about). The mask drawn by Trimpe for IH2 180-182 in 1974 got redesigned by Cockrum for GSX 1 in 1975. As early as 1980's X 139-FB, the earliest drawn flashback in the list, the distinction between the Trimpe and Cockrum versions was respected.

M/CP 51-FB includes the date "1974" but with GSX 1 1975 costume, same for AF 127/2-FB. The logical conclusion is that it takes place in 1974 but after IH2 182. For Wild Child, M/CP 51-FB is listed after AF 127/2-FB, the reverse of Wolverine. One of these must be wrong.

The costume in M/CP 59 is Mimic's imagination (he never saw Wolverine with his eyes) so I'm not concerned that it doesn't match IH2 181.

In W2 9-FB Wolverine appears in costume but without his mask. Same for SMV.W (1 - 5)-FB. So both can take place either before or after IH2 180-182 and indeed one is before while the other is after.

Also SMV.W (1 - 5)-FB (Mar 87) depicts Wolverine fighting Communists assassins and so does UX 228-FB-FB (Apr 88). With the costume in UX 228-FB-FB being the 1975 version, it would make sense to move this after IH2 182.

W2 144-FB is written as if it's the first time that Logan puts on the costume with reactions from Logan himself, Hudson, Heather and Chasen about the costume. The problem is there are stories with the costume placed earlier, including UX 228-FB-FB, W2 9-FB, M/CP 51-FB & AF 127/2-FB, and the most recent addition, X3 14-FB, which takes place circa X-Men 10, 1965, due to the presence of The Brotherhood of Evil Mutants.

Since W2 144-FB takes place at a time when Hulk is in Canada, X3 14-FB prevents us from putting W2 144 at the time of IH2 161. Even TTA 94/WWH:GC 2 (8 - 9)-FB is too late for X3 14-FB.

So it seems that W2 144-FB should be broken in two, the first part dealing with the first costume (and taking place before X3 14-FB) and the second part dealing with the Leader (later than Marvel Feature 11, Sep 73 per a note) at a time when Hulk is in Canada.

W2 144 is told by a Wolverine impostor, a Skrull who has certainly access to memories of his target, but that leaves a door open to reinterpret however we wish the account of this unreliable narrator.

With IH2 144 originally conceived as the first time he puts on a costume, one could argue to put all the undated appearances in costume after it but I would tend to move only the Cockrum costume appearances. And the early part of IH2 144 has to go before X3 14-FB. If Dept H was conceived to be an answer to the Avengers, it makes sense a costume was designed early on and not as late as 1974.

I'm not decided on where to break IH2 144:

After page 2. In this case Chasen's comment in 3:1 on the costume is a recurring joke and signifies the transition from 1965 to 1974.

After 3:1. We keep Chasen's comment on the costume. And we shift from a briefing to another.

After page 3. the mention of "a dry run before putting me loose on the unsuspecting world" would place page 3 early. But you can also have that comment before he's supposed to go public in Canada. His other costumed appearances such as W2 9, UX 228, SMV.W occur abroad.

After page 7. The confrontation with the terrorists is the first mission. His sudden disappearance is unexplained. Or a lie from the Skrull narrator.

After page 8. Wolverine disappears during his first mission. He's later captured by the Leader. But the Leader's flying saucer is on page 8.

Characters affected by revisions include: Hudson, Heather, Chasen (depending on the break in W2 144).
I'll add them when I make up my mind on where to break the story.
