Notes & Revisions for Retroactive X-Men Appearances Placed During X 129-137

Recommendations for revision of a number of retroactive appearances for the X-Men.

Classic X-Men 37/2: Early hours one Saturday morning; Dazzler is now performing regular gigs, and has a stable of friends, so some time has passed since Iron Age 3, which was only her second gig since moving into the neighborhood; at least after November 13, 1979 for the discussion of Reagan, and probably after the March 27 double-length first season finale of Buck Rogers, as it’s an episode worthy of note, so possibly Saturday March 29 1980.

Classic X-Men 38/2: This appears to be a contemporary story that would be better placed before UX 262. This works better visually, and accounts for Alison being hesitant to refer to herself as Dazzler. During the current placement, Alison was using the name Dazzler on a regular basis. Also, Alfred Hitchcock? Seriously? I don’t think so.

Classic X-Men 39/2: Phoenix should be listed as BTS.

Classic X-Men 40/2: At some point, this has been moved from before X 125, presumably due to the reference to Cerebro having recently detected a powerful mutant in Lower Manhattan, but it can’t take place between X 131 & X 132, as the X-Men don’t return to NYC. Instead, they head to Angel’s Rocky Mountains home; X 129-132 takes place from Saturday night to Sunday morning. CX 40/2 takes place on a Thursday. In X 129-131, Nightcrawler goes with Cyclops and Phoenix to search for Dazzler, and leaves with them to join the other X-Men in Chicago. In CX 40/2, Kurt takes the last train home to Westchester. There is no point during the search for Dazzler in which this can take place, so the powerful mutant detected by Cerebro can’t be her, however it could well be Billy Briggs from CX 39/2.

X:L 211 (17 - 18)-FB: Xavier running tests on Phoenix, when she demonstrates her ability to create a costume from the very atoms around her. This needs to go as near as possible to X 130, where Scott is surprised by this ability.

X:L 213 (6&7:9)-FB: This is a reworking of X 129 (8:3:4), and is only a memory of the event. It should be deleted.

I’m going to say that these issues take place in the following order:

SSOLS 7-FB: Xavier, Scott, Colossus, and Wolverine travel to England and attempt to recruit Andy Black for the X-Men.

It looks like Prof X may have remained in the UK alone for a while after the X-Men returned to the US.

AX2 4 (7)-FB: Scott, Jean, Ororo, and Logan head to Harry’s Hideaway for drinks, leaving Nightcrawler and Beast to play obstacle chess in the Danger Room, before Hank has to return to the Avengers.

CX 40/2: One of Nightcrawler’s first solo excursions to Lower Manhattan, checking out an alert from Cerebro on a powerful mutant in the area; probably after Hank returns to the Avengers, and the powerful mutant may well be Billy Briggs.

CX 39/2: Storm encounters Billy Briggs, a powerful mutant; Storm, Colossus & Wolverine take Billy to Jean, who’s BTS in this story; i’m assuming they take Billy to Jean, as Xavier’s possibly still in the UK at this point.

Regarding the point at which Phoenix is snatched from the timestream by Birch, this could not have happened during the time when Jean was the Black Queen at the Hellfire Gala. She hadn’t yet manifested the Dark Phoenix, and she was too powerful to be taken at this point. The contention would be that when he returns to recruit them, Iron Man should have materialized at a point just after he left each of the heroes, but the only point in which the actual Dark Phoenix could possibly have been taken is immediately after page 15, panel 1 of X 136. Iron Man must have appeared and recruited Cyclops immediately afterwards. Both Phoenix and Cyclops are then returned to this exact point, immediately before X 136, page 15:1. This works well visually, and makes more sense than the current placement.

It also seems to make more sense for Phoenix to be taken from the timestream to Nu-World immediately upon her return to Earth, between X 135 & 136. Considering she’s the most powerful being around this part of the galaxy, she sure gets nabbed out of the timestream a lot.
