CONAN THE ADVENTURER #1 (June 1994)

Conan, Cimmerians (inc Rion, Shawan, Fenrik), Aquilonian army (inc Cmdr. Metrius, Sodatus), Gundermen (inc Gaeric, Dalmus, Tenrek), Tamera (Metrius’ daughter), Shimata-Kawa

SYNOPSIS:
Conan, Rion and the Snowhawk tribe battle the invading Aquilonians and their hired Gundermen. Later, Conan and Rion visit the Venarium fort, where Conan meets a blind warrior (Shimata-Kawa), and they later report their findings to other fellow Cimmerians. They unite the various Cimmerians clans against their common enemy, the Aquilonians. The Cimmerians are victorious but Rion is killed. Conan takes Rion’s three-disc necklace for himself. Conan notices that even this shortly after victory the various Cimmerian tribes are already bickering with each other.

NOTE:
This issue’s letters page has an editorial from Roy, talking about getting a second chance to start at the beginning. Also, he plans to weave these early adventures around early COB stories.

CONAN THE ADVENTURER #2 (July 1994)

SYNOPSIS:
It’s been months since the battle at Venarium and Conan has grown bored and restless. He decides to leave before Mala entices him to stay. Conan joins with some Aesir reavers and soon spies some Vanir roasting a priest of Mitra. He’s ambushed but escapes. Conan doubles back and rescues his captured comrade, and also rescues the captured priest in the meantime. They retreat to a cave where the priest finds a talisman he was looking for. He uses it to cast a spell that kills the Vanir. They part ways, but the former priest tells Conan he thinks they’ll cross paths again, soon.

CONAN THE ADVENTURER #3 (August 1994)

Conan, Ludoxites (inc Burlos, Moru) & their homunculus, Lord Ludox, Sutekh (a wizard), Pollusites (inc Andamo, Urgo), Charnina residents (inc Moina)

SYNOPSIS:
Conan arrives in Charnina, a Brythunian city, where the Luxodites are warring with the Pollusites. Conan notices a fight between a Zingaran, Andamo, and Moru, a Pict. Conan instinctively attacks the Pict and they fight but Moru calls it a draw and leaves. Conan pals around with Andamo until a homunculus attacks. Conan manages to lure it away, saving Andamo.

NOTE:
This is Conan’s first time in a city and he’s introduced to the Sultanapur Sling.

CONAN THE ADVENTURER #4 (September 1994)

Conan, Pollusites (inc Andamo) & their homunculus, Luxodites (inc Moru, Burlos) & their homunculus, Lord Pollus, Zuchan (a sorceress), Lord Ludox, Sutekh, Charnina residents (inc Moina)

SYNOPSIS:
Conan watches as two homunculus’ battle each other while killing both Pollusites and Luxodites. Andamo realizes Lord Ludox and Lord Pollus have both magically animated the homunculus’ to wipe out the others’ forces. Conan learns that both Andamo and Moru are searching for pieces of an amulet. Conan manages to defeat the homunculus’ which kills the wizard and sorceress controlling them. They each had a piece of an amulet and Andamo and Moru each get one. Conan wanders off.

CONAN THE ADVENTURER #5 (October 1994)

SYNOPSIS:
Arriving in Potrebia, another Brythunian city, Conan stops some attackers from killing a woman. She turns out to be Welyn, a dirty, smelly witch. She tells Conan that she’s already found a piece of the amulet she’s looking for and Conan learns she’s covered in small demons that are constantly tattooing her. Conan offers to help and she tells him to get an antidote from a nearby temple. He gets it but is attacked by a small demon. He manages to rid himself of the creature and leaves town.

CONAN THE ADVENTURER #6 (November 1994)

APPEARANCES:
Conan, Gudrun & her parents (Hylda, Ahirn), slavers (inc Gurko, Turhin), a leopard

SYNOPSIS:
Between Brythunia and Zamora, Conan fights and kills a leopard. He’s found by a lady, Gudrun, who brings him to her mother’s house where he’s fed and nursed. He stays with them for a bit and helps them farm. Slavers arrive and kill the family; Conan kills the slavers. Conan buries the family and continues on to Zamora.

NOTE:
It’s hinted that we’re past COB 3 by this point, which next issue makes clear.

CONAN THE ADVENTURER #7 (December 1994)

SYNOPSIS:
Conan is caught in an avalanche. When he stands back up the Chooser of the Slain he meets (Skalla) is surprised. She explains that she gave up her death powers and wants to be human; they fool around for a bit. When they finish Hylda arrives, demanding Skalla return with her. When Conan opposes her, she brings forth recently gathered Brythunian souls to battle him. Conan defeats them but Skalla has decided to return with Hylda and tells Conan to forget about her.

CONAN THE ADVENTURER #8 (January 1995)

Conan, Kalandor residents (inc Avoosl Wuthoqquan, Gnut, Thieve’s Guild, a beggar)

SYNOPSIS:
Conan arrives in the Zamorian city Kalandor where a beggar tells him how to make easy money; thievery. Conan steals a bauble and sells it to a merchant, Avoosl Wuthoqquan. The merchant tells his guard to kill Conan and get his money back. Suddenly, the bauble comes to life and floats away; the merchant chases them. Conan kills the guard and spots the merchant running through the street and follows. The merchant goes into a cave where he finds a pile of gems, but the bauble was a monster’s eyes and it eats the merchant. Conan leaves but is knocked out by the city’s Thieve’s Guild; they take his money and tell him to leave town.

NOTE:
Freely adapted from “The Weird of Avoosl Wuthoqquan” by Clark Ashton Smith. Good stuff, despite my brief synopsis.

CONAN THE ADVENTURER #9 (February 1995)

SYNOPSIS:
Conan is awoken when Daedikaron crashes into a tree. Conan helps him down but the guy’s flying apparatus is damaged. The Turanian army arrives and wants the inventor to return to Sakyara with them. Queen Isadona (who has an amulet fragment) arrives, the inventor refuses to help her and she orders Conan and the inventor’s aide Tros to fight for her pleasure. Conan wins and the inventor says he’ll do as the queen wishes.

2nd Story:

SYNOPSIS:
On his way to Aquilonia, Ixastophanis is contacted by an image of a re-formed amulet. Meanwhile, Picts ambush some Zingaran soldiers. One of the Picts, Moru is also contacted. Andamo, fighting with the Zingarans against the Picts, is also contacted. In Corinthia, while he works on his flying machine, Daedikaron is also contacted. In Aghrapur, Welyn is also contacted while she whores around. In Yamatai, blind warrior Shimata-Kawa is also contacted.

CONAN THE ADVENTURER #10 (March 1995)

SYNOPSIS:
Conan asks the inventor about the amulet shards. Conan is called to pleasure Queen Isadona, but when he mentions previous lovers she orders him killed. He takes her amulet shard and returns to the inventor. They escape the Turanians but the inventor takes the amulet and Conan is captured by the Inquisitor on Ong.

2nd Story:

SYNOPSIS:
In Arenjun, Welyn, Moru and Andamo meet in a tavern and agree to work together to find the amulet pieces.

CONAN THE ADVENTURER #11 (April 1995)

SYNOPSIS:
Conan is brought to Ong where he’s interrogated and tortured. Conan re-meets Shimata-Kawa, who is also being tortured, and points out the Grand Inquisitor has an amulet shard. Shimata-Kawa frees himself and Conan and they kill the inquisitors. Conan grabs the shard and decide to head for the desert of Yondo.

NOTE:
Suggested by a tale by Clark Ashton Smith.

Conan is 17 years old here.

CONAN THE ADVENTURER #12 (May 1995)

SYNOPSIS:
Conan and Shimata-Kawa travel to Yondo and they run into Welyn who is trapped in magic vines. Conan frees her and is attacked by an armored giant. Conan defeats it and it transforms back into Daedikaron and Tros. The group continues toward Yondo.

NOTE:
Inspired by a story by Clark Ashton Smith.

2nd Story:

SYNOPSIS:
An image of the Tolometh amulet appears before the group and they’re attacked by monsters. When they’re victorious they each get an idea of where to look for the pieces. They go their separate ways.

CONAN THE ADVENTURER #13 (June 1995)

FLASHBACK:
Eons ago, Tolometh was a powerful being with a meteor for an eye.
SYNOPSIS:
Conan and friends are attacked by a sand devil, but they’re able to defeat it with their amulet shards. Meanwhile, Andamo plots with the Patriarch of Tolometh. The group enters Yondo and are attacked by gurgling monsters. Tros is killed, and Daedikaron is impaled with Tros’ severed head.

NOTE:
The flashback is an illustrated poem, basically, by Clark Ashton Smith.

Tros is revealed to be a synthetic creation, like a robot.

2nd Story:

SYNOPSIS:
In Potrebia, Welyn goes to the Temple of Tolomoth and speaks with the Patriarch of Tolomoth; he offers to give her a shard of the amulet if she dances for him. She does, but she also drugs his wine. She grabs the piece and leaves, but the patriarch punishes her for her treachery and has little demons constantly tattoo her.

CONAN THE ADVENTURER #14 (July 1995)

Conan, Seven Seekers (inc Moru, Ixastophanis, Andamo, Shimata-Kawa, Welyn, Daedikaron (corpse), Tros (corpse)), Tolometh & his patriarch, little shadow, pool-dwellers

SYNOPSIS:
The gigantic Tolometh rises from the Vilayet Sea. Conan and co. battle the gurgling demons. The monsters are defeated but Ixastophanis is killed. Andamo reveals he’s the patriarch’s bodyguard and Moru attacks; they kill each other. The Patriarch attacks the others and kills Shimata-Kawa while his puppet kills Welyn. Conan kills the Patriarch with his sword’s scabbard and shatters the completed amulet. Tolometh screams and sinks back into the Vilayet Sea. Conan mourns his friends and when he leaves the temple it collapses. With this adventure behind him, Conan heads for Arenjun, the City of Thieves.
