SAVAGE SWORD OF CONAN #187 (July 1991)
By Larry Yakata & Ernie Chan

APPEARANCES:
Conan, Aniki (also in fb), Turanians, Vendhyan slavers (also in fb, inc a shaman), blind artisans (inc Esumi (also in fb), Erasul, Leonides), apes, the Unspeakable (reanimated giant lizard)

SYNOPSIS:
Along the Turanian coast, Conan’s drinking is interrupted by a bar fight. Conan is surprised that the man who wins is a Cimmerian nobleman, Aniki. When some locals arrive looking to collect a bounty on Conan’s head, he kills them. The two decide to get out of town and Conan wonders if Aniki is from his province in Cimmeria. They travel to the Himelian mountains toward a small outpost beyond Jelai; they’re looking for a colony of blind artisans being held captive. As they attack the stronghold Conan wonders if Aniki was also trained by Sennen. When they find the artisans, Esumi says they could be brothers. They take the artisans away but are followed by the Vendhyans, who attack them with apes. They defeat them and get the artisans to the hot springs they were heading for and their sight is restored. A Vendhyan shaman calls forth the Unspeakable to attack the artisans; Conan and Aniki kill it. With the Vendhyans defeated they return the artisans to where they came from, but weeks later their sights fails them. Aniki returns, having secured the services of honest merchants to sell the artisans ivory creations but is sad at the news of their sight. The Vendhyans return but are quickly killed. Aniki stays with the partisans and Conan wanders off.

NOTE:
It’s heavily hinted that Aniki is Conan’s older brother and Conan asks if he is, but we (and Conan) don’t get an answer. Also, "Aniki" says that's just an alias; we never find out what his real Cimmerian name is.

When a Pict shaman discovered a phrase that disgusted both kinds of the Sons of Set, mankind forced both into hiding; the Serpent-Men learned to disguise themselves as humans. Later, King Kull and Brule defeated the Serpent-Men. After the Great Cataclysm, Thoth-Amon rose to power and rules over both the Serpent-Men and Man-Serpents. Recently, Thulsa Doom began calling out to the Serpent-Men, lulling them away from Thoth-Amon in the hopes they could restore his body.
SYNOPSIS:
As they continue, Kuchum’s ship is attacked by the Black Corsairs, but stop when Laranga recognizes Amra. They exchange pleasantries and continue on their way. That night as Conan and Li-Zya fool around, Thoth-Amon and Thulsa Doom chat. Thoth-Amon tries to throw Thulsa Doom overboard, but the skull chomps his hand and they both go over. Conan dives in to retrieve them but is attacked by a giant shark. Instead of getting chewed to death, Conan jumps into the shark’s mouth then carves his way out of its belly. Conan returns to the ship, but the monkey has lost a paw. They find Thulsa Doom’s island but are attacked by warrior-slaves; when they defeat the slaves they’re greeted by “Khitans.” They’re given a feast, but a dancing girl warns Conan the Khitans are actually Serpent-Men. “Prince Phan-Ku” gives Li-Zya a tour and tricks her into being a sacrifice. Conan rescues Li-Zya and outs the Serpent-Men using the Pictish phrase “Ka Nama Kaa Lajerama.” Everyone fights but the good guys are overpowered.

NOTE:
Kuchum’s father was Kuan-Ti, warlord of Khun-Lun. I wonder if there’s a connection to Yu-Ti of K’un-Lun?

SAVAGE SWORD OF CONAN #196 (April 1992)
By Roy Thomas & John Buscema

APPEARANCES:
Conan & the Red Hand’s crew (inc Capt. Strombanni, Galacus, Valeria), Lady Morganis (of Kordava), Red Brotherhood (inc Capt. Red Ortho & his crew, Capt. Black Zarono & his crew (inc Zingelito), Benitus, Rikko, Capt. Bloody Tranicos (in fb) & his crew (in fb)), Port Tortage residents (inc Pythios, Sylvara, Carrina), Tothmekri (in fb) & his Stygians (in fb), Kordavans (in fb), Picts (in fb), Zingaran crew, Devourer of the Dead (alligator head, lion body, hippo legs monster), Lord Hambria (Lady Morganis’ husband, mentioned only)

FLASHBACK:
Brief recap of the previous story, no new information. Nearly a century ago, Tranicos attacked an island fort led by Tothmekri, looking to loot his riches. When they won, they raped and pillages and destroyed the fort; when they set sail they were never seen again. Years later a captured pirate in Kordava said he knew where Tranicos sailed to before disappearing to avoid execution (fb). The pirate return to Tranicos’ island but his crew were killed by Picts; only he survived (fb-fb). The pirate wasn’t believed and was executed anyway, but he drew a map with his own blood before dying.
SYNOPSIS:
Conan arrives in Port Tortage and a barfight almost immediately breaks out. Conan is hired to be on Capt. Strombanni’s crew, and a few days later when they set sail Conan learns they’re searching for the treasure of Tranicos. They spot a merchant ship and attack, finding Lady Morganis aboard. Soon after they’re attacked by Black Zarano’s ship. They eventually settle down and agree to split the treasure if they find it. Also, the formerly disguised as a man, sailor on the Zingaran ship Valeria joins the Red Brotherhood. Strombanni takes Morganis as his “prize.” After a chat, Conan is surprised that Valeria has met Red Sonja. They find Tothmekri’s island and begin searching for clues while Valeria agrees to help Lady Morganis escape. They find what they’re looking for, half of a medallion, and when the two pieces are put together the ground begins to shake and the medallion starts glowing. The monstrous Devourer of the Dead bursts from the ground and attacks, the result of a curse laid by Tothmekri. Conan sees the arriving Valeria and Morganis and distracts the monster from them. Conan destroys the medallion, which defeats the beast. Everyone returns to their ships.

NOTE:
Conan orders a Sultanapur Sling again.

Conan realizes Valeria isn’t a man when a boob falls out of her shirt. Oops! And that’s the TOTALLY CANON first meeting of Conan and Valeria.

An editor’s note points us to RS2 1-2 to see how Valeria knows Red Sonja.

Conan recalls encountering another creature called the Devourer of the Dead, but realizes they’re not the same (the other one, from COB 86, was a tentacled creature).

Also, the recent Age of Conan: Valeria #1-5 reveals that Valeria’s mother is Lady Merina, so they’ll likely be listed as so:

LADY MERINA

VALERIA/MERINA

Because Valeria was never a lady. :)

2nd Story:

SAVAGE SWORD OF CONAN #197 (May 1992)
By Roy Thomas & John Buscema

APPEARANCES:
Conan & the Red Hand’s crew (inc Capt. Strombanni, Galacus, Valeria, Darrus (mentioned)), Lady Morganis, Red Brotherhood (inc Capt. Black Zarono & his crew (inc Zingelito)), Messantian guards (inc Licio, Marsius) & residents (inc Publio (remember him?), Ram Lal, Bragatos, Ahmak, Tureem), assassins, Spider God statue

SYNOPSIS:
The crew arrives in Messantia looking for new leads on the treasure map. While Strombanni does that, Conan and Valeria take Morganis to Publio to arrange her ransom. Publio agrees when Morganis reveals she knows where the Dragon of Kaontsu is and how to get it. Publio sends his man Ram Lal to steal it. Meanwhile, Strombanni and Zarano meet with Bragatos to see about the map. Bragatos ends up deasd and the two accuse each other of the deed. Ram Lal runs off with the Dragon so Publio sends Conan after him. After being chased by city guards the pair finds Ram Lal dead in Publio’s hideout. Meanwhile, Morganis sneaks away. Conan and Valeria are attacked by assassins but they easily escape. Morganis accidentally runs into Ahmak, who the Dragon was stolen from. Conan and Valeria arrive, rescuing Morganis, but they’re cornered in the Temple of a Thousand Gods. Ahmak’s servant Tureem animates a statue of the Spider God, which kills Ahmak. Conan eventually defeats it by toppling a statue of Dagon onto it, impaling it with the statue’s sword. They meet up with the pirate Captains, one of which has the map.

NOTE:
Freely adapted from “The Dragon of Kao Tsu” by REH.

Conan mentions fighting the Spider God before in Yezud, but it’s unclear if it’s a reference to COB 13 (Omm) or the upcoming SAVSCO 207-210 (Zath). Either way, this is just an animated statue and not the Spider God itself. Also, Conan remembers COB 66 where he thought a statue of Dagon came to life.

Also, Lady Morganis REALLY likes to sleep around. There was a fake Dragon of Kaontsu that had a list of all the men she cheated on her husband with; that’s why she was sailing last issue (to get it back).

2nd Story:

SAVAGE SWORD OF CONAN #198 (June 1992)
By Roy Thomas & John Buscema

APPEARANCES:
Conan & the Red Hand’s crew (inc Capt. Strombanni, Galacus, Valeria, Ravio, Korlos, Garaldi, Salvora, Berto, Rufos), Lady Morganis, Atarata (soul eater) & his Holy Order (inc Asa, Kera, Bela), Red Brotherhood (inc Corus, Thumo, Decios, Capt. Red Ortho & his crew, Murrio, Vergus), Port Tortage residents (inc Fenian, Pythios), Lord Hambria (bts, declined to pay any ransom for Morganis)

SYNOPSIS:
As they sail back to Port Tortage, the ship happens across three ladies in a life boat. They’re of the Holy Order of Atarata but they creep Strombanni out so he lets the crew do with them as they please. Conan puts a stop to that. They start preaching about their religion like a bunch of weirdos. Arriving at Port Tortage, Conan gets the ladies into an inn and notices the crew is morose with the ladies gone. The next day Conan watches as the ladies actively change men’s attitudes before learning Morganis’ husband has declined to pay any ransom for her. Strombanni tosses Morganis out, but before Conan can talk to her, she’s recruited by the ladies. The ladies continue to preach for the next few days and then begin a prohibition kick and tell all the wenches to get out of town. Now in the ladies’ thrall the pirates become their enforcers. Conan wonders why he’s the only man unaffected. Later, Conan spies the ladies communing with Atarata; when he confronts them they seduce him and tie him up. In the morning he breaks free and watches a mass baptism where the pirates willingly follow the ladies into a lake. Conan dives in and sees an underwater palace where Atarata is waiting to enslave the men. Conan attacks Atarata, stabbing him in the brain; Atarata’s blood sprays over everyone, breaking their enslavement and they flee. Conan kills the beast and makes it to the surface before he drowns. Conan holds a funeral for the three ladies before the pirates realize all the women have been taken from Port Tortage, and they leave to get them back.

NOTE:
Inspired by the poem “The Soul-Eater” by REH.

SAVAGE SWORD OF CONAN #199 (July 1992)
By Roy Thomas & John Buscema

APPEARANCES:
Conan & the Red Hand’s crew (inc Capt. Strombanni (bts, sent Galacus back to Port Tortage), Galacus, Valeria (bts, joined Red Ortho’s crew), Lady Morganis, Zingaran buccaneers (inc Lord Hambria, Sinnjatorix (Hambria’s wizard)), Atarata (corpse), Red Brotherhood (inc Capt. Black Zarono & his crew (inc Zingelito, Cat. Borgio & his crew), Capt. Red Ortho (bts, hires Valeria as first mate)), Port Tortage residents (inc Pythios, Fenian, Sofia (Fenian’s daughter), Sylvara), King Fedrugo (bts, authorized Lord Hambria to attack Port Tortage)

SYNOPSIS:
Conan hangs out with the bartender Pythios until they notice Black Zarano and Zingaran buccaneers approaching the now-empty Port Tortage. Conan assembles a small force and battles the attacking Zingarans, but Fenian is killed and Sofia is taken captive; Conan is also captured. Conan meets Lord Hambria, who is interested in the treasure map Conan mentions. Zarano leaves to search for Strombanni. Hambria asks Conan about Atarata’s underwater temple. They travel to the lake and Hambria tells Conan to retrieve something from the wreckage. He gets it, but is outraged when he learns Sofia is to be sacrificed for a spell; it doesn’t matter because she kills herself before they can sacrifice her. The spell is cast anyway, mutating Hambria’s wizard. Growing into a monstrous beast the wizard decapitates Hambria. Conan fights the mutated wizard until reinforcements arrive, led by Pythios (and the wenches from last issue, inc Morganis). With the beast distracted, Conan kills it. Conan boards the ship, but not without Sofia’s body. After putting Sofia to rest, Conan orders the ship to save what it can of the ablaze Port Tortage and learns that Red Ortho has taken Valeria as his first mate. Conan tells Morganis that he’ll get her back to Kordava.

SAVAGE SWORD OF CONAN #200 (August 1992)
By Roy Thomas & John Buscema

APPEARANCES:
Robert E. Howard, Ranjit Topi (from Calcutta), Hester Jane Ervin Howard, Texans (inc Joe, Pedro, Carmelita); Conan, King Yezdigerd & his mage, Turanian army, a cult (inc Dharmi Shan), Zamorians (inc Lylah), devil bats, demon from the Outer Dark

FLASHBACK:
Recap of COB 4, 58-100, SAVSCO 5-6, 26-27 & 52 & COB@ 2.
SYNOPSIS:
Conan is fighting the Turanian army until King Yezdigerd’s mage calls forth a giant bat which takes Conan away toward Zamora. 12,000 years later in Texas, February 1932, Robert E. Howard visits the Alamo, looking for inspiration for new stories. Later in San Antonio, Robert meets Ranjit Topi in an antiques shop. As they chat they take a bus to Rio Grande City where Ranjit tells him about the recent atrocities he’s witnessed in China. Meanwhile, as the giant bat nears a strange temple, Conan stabs it; the bat’s body breaks Conan fall as they crash to the ground and Conan kills the beast. Howard and Topi part ways and Howard buys a sombrero before entering a cantina. Conan enters a tavern in Tarsephus where he meets Dharmi Shan, who wants to chat with Conan about his adventures; he drugs Conan by way of a tavern wench, and Conan begins to feel woozy. Howard gets drunk and eats an enchilada, but overhears Topi discussing smuggling something across the border. A waitress tells Topi about Howard; he has his goons toss Howard in the river. Conan staggers out of the tavern and is attacked by Dharim Shan’s goons; Conan kills him but passes out from the drug. Howard crawls out of the river and returns to the cantina and follows the waitress as she meets with Topi. Howard attacks the group but is knocked on the head by Carmelita (the waitress). Conan awakes in the strange temple, surrounded by cultists and Dharmi Shan and the captive wench (Lylah). Dharmi Shan recounts visions he’s seen of Conan’s past & future (see FLASHBACK), some of which Conan remembers. Dharmi Shan begins a spell to shorten Conan’s life (judging by which, SAVSCO 5-6 & 26-37 haven’t happened yet) but Conan breaks free. A demon is called forth but Conan defeats it. Dharmi Shan tries to hypnotize Conan into killing himself, but he resists and decapitates the wizard. Conan escapes with Lylah as the temple collapses, and they leave to celebrate their survival. Howard chases after Carmelita, and when he catches her he tosses her in mud, saying if it was one of his stories it would have been a cesspool (like with Jenna in COB 11). Feeling invigorated, he knows he has a new hero to write about, greater than Solomon Kane, Bran Mak Morn and King Kull, but he can’t quite grasp the name… until he’s greeted by Conan, a Cimmerian. Conan vanishes and Howard blinks, finding himself in front of the cantina again, never having entered. Howard decides not to enter, and instead takes the last bus back to Cross Planes. Once home, Howard greets his mother and begins writing, already having drawn a map of his Hyborian Age, typing with vigorous resolve “The Phoenix on the Sword.”

NOTE:
Followed by “A Short History of Savage Sword” by Roy Thomas.

Followed in turn by “The Father of Conan” by Glenn Lord.

This issue’s letters page is an editorial by Roy Thomas, explaining the story behind this issue’s story, inspired by CODNESS 4/3’s Starr the Slayer. He goes on to say that this is probably an imaginary story thought up by Howard (and is probably why it’s not included in COSAGA’s Roy Thomas chronology), but given the clues if we wanted to place it, it would have to be before SAVSCO 5-6, and since Yezdigerd is king, after SAVSCO 38. That’s a pretty small window:

This is basically Roy constructing a proper story from the various flashbacks that happen between SAVSCO 46-47, but with added Valeria. Unfortunately, it seems Roy was unaware of COK 20-FB. I’ll just assume that after Trocero & co. learned Conan was alive, Conan got caught again off-panel and they freed him from that. Here’s a map:

Post by Col_Fury »

SAVAGE SWORD OF CONAN #202 (October 1992)
By Roy Thomas & John Buscema

APPEARANCES:
Conan & his crew (inc Borgio, Tyrus, Rutus, Bella), Lady Morganis, Imhotep (also in fb), King Palambo (also in fb), Queen Zanji (also in fb), Kushite guards (inc Capt. Sennar), Zabhela residents

FLASHBACK:
Recap of COB 179-185 (years ago). Imhotep arrives in Zabhela and asks the king for help, but the queen throws him in the stockade (months ago).
SYNOPSIS:
A sea storm results in Conan being promoted to captain of his ship. When they reach shore Conan arranges for Lady Morganis to be sent home; she promises to make Conan rich for his help. Noticing Zingaran buccaneers, Conan sails south, eventually outlasting them. They dock at Zabhela looking for supplies but are quickly arrested; the king wants them to train his people in sailing so he can have an armada. Tossed in the stockade along with his crew, Conan is surprised to be greeted by Imhotep (who looks like a Stygian to everyone else). Later, Conan is surprised again when the queen wants to have a threesome with Conan and Imhotep; they toss the queen out the window and kill her guards. Conan agrees to help Imhotep with his quest if he returns to free his crew. Imhotep kills the king and steals his horse and they’re off.

2nd Story:
By Roy Thomas & E.R. Cruz

This King Kull story is already in the MCP.

SAVAGE SWORD OF CONAN #203 (November 1992)
By Roy Thomas & John Buscema

APPEARANCES:
Conan, Imhotep (also in fb) & his sky-hordes (also in fb), Hak-Heru (bts, sent demons & horde, also in fb) & his winged demons, Pazuzu (in fb), Ageera, Meroan guards (inc Capt. Mongo) & residents (inc Habarata)

FLASHBACK:
Months ago in Kheshatta, the wizard Hak-Heru summoned Imhotep and his demon horde back to this dimension, steals his amulet and demon horde, puts a spell on him to look like a Stygian and has him dropped in the middle of the desert.
SYNOPSIS:
Conan and Imhotep continue on Imhotep’s quest toward Kheshatta and Imhotep tells Conan his story. They’re attacked by Hek-Heru’s demons; they easily defeat the beasts and continue until they arrive at Meroe. Despite knowing the captain of the city guard Mongo (from COB 107), Conan and Imhotep are taken to the king anyway. Conan is surprised to see Ageera (the witch-smeller) in charge, speaking for the king. When Ageera realizes what Imhotep is he orders them both killed. Imhotep is captured while Conan escapes and hides in the city. After a nap, Conan makes his way to his old lover, Habarata’s place where he finds she’s now Mongo’s lover. Conan knock Mongo out and fools around with his lady. Later, Conan disguises himself as Mongo and frees Imhotep, but they’re discovered. During the battle they’re attacked by Imhotep’s horde.

NOTE:
Imhotep’s steed from COB 179-185 is named Pazuzu here.

Habarata is a former lover of Conan’s, during his previous time in Meroe. This wasn’t shown anywhere during COB 106-107, however.

2nd Story:
By Roy Thomas & Sandu Florea

APPEARANCES:
Conan, Cimmerians (inc Jongalt (also in fb), Corum (in fb), Brax, Kirhak, Old Garrad (also in fb)), Ghost Man (also in fb), a Vanir (in fb), Picts (in fb)

FLASHBACK:
Garrad, who was old even then, fights alongside other Cimmerians, including Corum, against the Picts. Garrad is wounded, but magically healed by a Pict shaman, the “Ghost Man.” Old Garrad hasn’t aged a day since. Two generations earlier, Garrad saved the Ghost Man’s life, so he felt he owed a debt to Garrad.
SYNOPSIS:
Young Conan is going to visit Old Garrad, who is sick, but is held up by Jongalt who tells Conan’s stories about Garrad. Conan learns Garrad was crushed by a tree but still lives; Garrad says the Pict Shaman made it so that he can’t die unless his heart stops. He makes Conan promise to cut out his heart if his brain is ever crushed. Later, Conan gets into a fight with a bully then visits Garrad again, who has recovered. The bully tries to kill Conan with a spear, but it hits Garrad in the face instead. Conan kills the bully. Keeping his promise Conan cuts out Garrad’s heart; it turns to crystal and the Ghost Man arrives to retrieve it.

NOTE:
Freely adapted from the short story “Old Garfield’s Heart” by REH.

Conan is 14 years old here.

Jongalt calls Conan’s grandfather Corum (who appears in flashback) here. COB 232 (1990) established that Conan’s paternal grandfather was Conan, and that Conan was named after him. COB 119 (1981) established that Conan maternal grandfather was Drogin. Maybe Corum was a great-grandfather? Or “Corum” is a nickname?

SAVAGE SWORD OF CONAN #204 (December 1992)
By Roy Thomas & John Buscema

APPEARANCES:
Conan, Imhotep & his sky-hordes, Hak-Heru, Meroan guards (inc Capt. Mongo, Lotapa, Bashat) & residents (inc M’Tumbu, his wife & child), Tombalku soldiers (inc Gen. Battuta, Cpl. Mansura, Lt. Lulala), Gazal residents (inc Briji)

FLASHBACK:
Recap of SACSCO 21.
SYNOPSIS:
The demon horde abduct Imhotep and Conan escapes Meroe, after some help following a kindness. Conan travels to Gazal, whose residents Conan notices are in a daze. Days later, armed horsemen of Tombalku arrive in Gazal; one of them recognizes Conan, who is also now in a daze. They toss Conan in a dungeon and loot the place. Conan eventually comes out of his stupor, and after a murderous rise of clarity continues on to Kheshatta.

NOTE:
This was a good one, even if I was brief with the synopsis.

2nd Story:
By Roy Thomas & Ovi Hondru

APPEARANCES:
Conan, Orma (beautiful woman) & her slaves, Mirzak (Babur’s emissary) & his hooded minion, Tashi (Orma’s servant girl), Khorbul residents, Pavdi Thaar (Lord of Khorbul, mentioned), Babur (war chief, mentioned)

SYNOPSIS:
At the foot of the Himelian Mountains is the wall city-state Khorbul. Conan sneaks in and finds Orma, a beautiful woman. She’s changed her mind about fooling around with him and has her slaves toss him out the window. Mirzak is outside and tells Conan he can’t convince Babur to give him a note of safe passage. With all his plans dashed Conan gets a drink, unaware Orma chose Mirzak over him. A robed stranger pays the bartender to drug Conan’s drink, which will put him in a murderous rage. Suddenly looking to settle a grudge, Conan returns to Orma’s place. Mirzak gives Conan the note, but Conan tosses him down stone stairs. He tells Orma the drug made him come after her, threatens to tell the city Lord she’s plotting against him and wanders off.

NOTE:
Freely adapted from the short story “Murderer’s Grog” by REH.

An editor’s note says this story occurs some months before “The People of the Black Circle.”

SAVAGE SWORD OF CONAN #205 (January 1993)
By Roy Thomas & John Buscema

APPEARANCES:
Conan, Black Ring (inc Lord Zula (also in fb), Lady Athyr-Bast (also in fb), Thoth-Amon (in fb), Hak-Heru (in fb), Geb-Siris (in fb), Ur-Pophis (in fb)), Helgor (in fb), Ageera, Meroe army (inc Cmdr. Mongo), Kheshatta residents (inc Akmit, Lord Khebet-Haan (vo), Lord Buto-Desh (vo), Wuu), a caravan, slavers, demon monster made of gargoyles

FLASHBACK:
Recap of COB 85-FB, 84-85 & 248. Months ago, Zula returned to Kheshatta and was admitted into the Black Ring.
SYNOPSIS:
Conan arrives at Kheshatta, but is arrested for stealing a camel; after some bidding he’s purchased by his old friend Zula, now a member of the Black Ring. Once they get to the House of Sho-Onoru they catch up on old times. Conan tells Zula about Imhotep before they’re attacked by a demon monster conjured by rival sorcerer Lady Athyr-Bast, upset with Zula for outbidding her for Conan. They eventually defeat the beast. Zula agrees to help Conan. Meanwhile, Cmdr. Mongo and Ageera lead the Meroe army toward Kheshatta.

2nd Story:
By Roy Thomas & Jerry DeCaire

APPEARANCES:
King Conan, Count Trocero (also in fb), Publius, Baron Enri (of Nemedia), Lady Evlena (Enri’s daughter, also in fb), Rolok (one of Evlena’s former lovers), Aquilonians, demon, Argello (Trocero’s great-grandfather, in painting only), Evlena (Trocero’s great-grandmother, mentioned only)

FLASHBACK:
Two weeks ago, Lady Evlena tries to push Trocero over a cliff. One week ago, she tried to trample Trocero with her horse.
SYNOPSIS:
King Conan returns to Tarantia and meets Count Trocero’s fiancée. After telling Conan about how his great-grandfather murdered his great-Grandmother, Trocero tells Conan he believes in Karma and that Lady Evlena has tried to kill him twice. King Conan is skeptical. At dinner, Conan meets Rolok, one of Evlena’s former lovers, who gave her a Stygian ring as a gift. Suddenly, Evlena tries to murder Trocero with a knife. Conan confronts Rolok about the ring, who admits it and reveals he called a demon to kill whoever is wearing the ring. Conan breaks Rolok’s hand and reveals he put the ring on Rolok. The demon arrives and devours him. Conan wonders how he’s going to explain things to Baron Enri.

NOTE:
Freely adapted from the short story “The Haunter of the Ring” by REH.

An editor’s note says this happens shortly after “The Phoenix on the Sword.”

Lady Evlena is Trocero’s fiancée, and he says she’s been great for him ever since Feiwana died. However, COK 26 is clear that Trocero married Amanda when he was still a knight, and is still married to her as a Count after Conan becomes King (something like over 20 years, but COK 26 is a little vague about that), and after Conan’s children are born (meaning way after Phoenix on the Sword). Also, Trocero is brought to tears when he’s finally reunited with Amanda in COK 26.

So, did Trocero marry Amanda, get assigned to Tarantia and have a second wife Feiwana while there? And when she died Lady Evlena was to replace her, all while Amanda is in Poitan?

Publius is called “Publio” here.

SAVAGE SWORD OF CONAN #206 (February 1993)
By Roy Thomas & John Buscema

APPEARANCES:
Conan & his crew (inc Tyrus), Black Ring (inc Lord Zula, Lady Athyr-Bast, Thoth-Amon, Hak-Heru, Geb-Siris, Ur-Pophis), Imhotep & his sky-hordes, Meroe army (inc Cmdr. Mongo), Ageera, Queen Zanji, Pazuzu, Kheshatta army, Zabhela residents, Devourer of the Dead, gargoyles, she-demon

SYNOPSIS:
Zula introduces Conan to the Black Ring and they warn the wizards about the approaching Meroe army. As the wizards squabble about what to do, Conan is forced to live a board game where he evades the Devourer of the Dead. The Meroe army arrives at Kheshatta as Conan wanders the Pit in search of Imhotep. Hak-Heru calls Imhotep’s demon horde to fight the Meroans and Conan frees Imhotep. Imhotep kills Hak-Heru and regains his amulet, then kills Ageera. Conan confronts Mongo, who reveals he killed Habarata for sleeping with Conan. Conan kills Mongo. Imhotep agrees to keep up his end of the bargain and Conan bids Zula farewell. Zula prepares to rise in the Black Ring’s ranks but notices the approaching Thoth-Amon and decides to get out of town. Imhotep attacks Zabhela while Conan frees his crew. Queen Zanji trips and accidentally dies on the torture device she was going to use on Conan’s crew. Conan sets sail to see what new adventures they can find.

NOTE:
Ageera is called King Ageera here, despite only speaking for the king in #203. Odd.
