Conan the Barbarian #232-240

Post by Col_Fury »

Sorry wolverine7230! I'm still leaving Conan the Adventurer #1-14 to you. :)

CONAN THE BARBARIAN #232 (May 1990)
By Michael Higgins & Ron Lim

APPEARANCES:
King Conan (also in fb), Conn, Conan (Conan’s paternal grandfather, in fb, see NOTE), Baelin (Conan’s grandfather’s enemy, in fb), his wife, children & Aesir (in fb), Acegra (sorceress, in fb) & her demons (some winged, one turned into a Conan Sr. doppelganger, in fb), Conan’s paternal grandmother (Corin’s mother, in fb), Jorrma (Baelin & Acegra’s son, bts in fb, about to be born, see NOTE), Corin (Conan’s father, in fb, see NOTE), Greshan (Conan’s mother, in fb, see NOTE), Cimmerians (in fb), Vanir (in fb), a wolf (in fb)

FLASHBACK:
Conan and some Cimmerians battle Baelin and his men when suddenly they’re attacked by winged demons. The two defeat them and call a temporary truce to bury their dead. That night Conan is ensorcelled by Acegra, the sorceress who sent the demons. The spell is broken when Conan is attacked by a wolf. Acegra (plotting against Conan’s future bloodline) goes with plan B and turns one of her demons into a Conan doppelganger, who then murders Baelin’s wife and children. Meanwhile, Conan wonders why he was about to murder a woman and her children and wanders off. Baelin swears vengeance and goes searching for Conan. Conan happens across some Vanir beating up a Cimmerian and saves him. Later, Baelin happens by and helps the only survivor. Conan takes the Cimmerian to his house to heal and Conan fools around with the lady living with the Cimmerian. Acegra possesses the body of some lady a seduces Baelin. Conan and the Cimmerian leave to look for the Vanir. There’s a big fight and the Cimmerian dies. When Conan tells the lady her friend is dead she tells Conan that she’s pregnant with his child. Acegra leaves the woman mindless, still pregnant. Meanwhile, Conan’s son (Corin) is born. Conan teaches Corin how to fight and over the next 20 years or so Corin marries Greshan. Conan and Baelin finally face each other in battle and both die. Meanwhile, Corin’s son is born on the battlefield and he names him Conan, after his father (see NOTE).
SYNOPSIS:
King Conan tells his son Conn stories from his youth.

NOTE:
The only characters named here are Baelin, Acegra and Conan (and Conan’s grandfather through implication). SAVSCO 227 reveals Conan was named after Corin’s father, and Corin’s and Greshan’s names were revealed elsewhere. Crom only knows what Corin’s mother’s name is/was.

Jorrma is named next issue, and revealed to be the child of Acegra and Baelin in COB 240 (though there were hints earlier).

Conn is young here, but old enough to form permanent memories (in theory). I’d say he’s between 8 and 11 years old.

CONAN THE BARBARIAN #233 (June 1990)
By Michael Higgins & Ron Lim

APPEARANCES:
Conan, Corin, Greshan, Jorrma, Acegra, a barmaid, Cimmerians (inc Dryden), Aesir, a wolf

SYNOPSIS:
Conan is a few months old and is left in the wilderness to survive the night. Years later his father is a blacksmith (pages 1 - 9) and he receives his grandfather’s knife as a gift. Conan uses it to go hunting and meets Jorrma, and they become friends. Later they try to rob a palace and only partially succeed. Jorrma reveals his village will be attacked so Conan agrees to help. Acegra watches magically from afar and intervenes; as they arrive at Jorrma’s village his house is magically set on fire. Jorrma enters the blaze and finds a box. Conan thinks Jorrma is demonic because he survived the fire and prepares to attack his friend (pages 10 - 24).

NOTE:
The barmaid is named Melanie in COB 236.

CONAN THE BARBARIAN #234 (July 1990)
By Michael Higgins & Ron Lim

APPEARANCES:
Conan & 2 of his siblings, Jorrma, Corin, Greshan, Acegra & her demons (turned into Hyperborean doppelgangers), a barmaid, Cimmerians (inc Kaentner), Hyperboreans

SYNOPSIS:
Conan decides Jorrma isn’t a demon and they leave the destroyed town. Jorrma doesn’t tell Conan about the box full of jewels. They get drunk in a tavern and the next day Jorrma learns the Hyperboreans are preparing to attack some Cimmerians. Jorrma interrupts Conan’s time with a barmaid and they take off. Meanwhile, Acegra kills the Hyperboreans and turns her demons into doppelgangers of them. Conan and Jorrma find some dead Cimmerians and are shocked to see some dead demons with them. Meanwhile, the Snow Hawk tribe (where Conan is from) prepares for the incoming “Hyperboreans,” thanks to scouts spotting their approach. Conan and Jorrma rest for the night and Jorrma gives Conan a protective necklace. The Snow Hawk tribe battles the “Hyperboreans” and Conan’s father is killed. Acegra arrives and leads her demons back into Conan’s village where Conan’s mother is also decapitated while protecting her other children. Conan swears vengeance and Acegra is pleased his bloodline is almost eradicated.

NOTE:
Conan gets lucky with a barmaid here, so we’re after COB 48-FB, where Conan loses his virginity. Also, Conan’s parents are killed here, so we have to be after SAVSCO 227 where they’re still alive.

Also, two of Conan’s siblings appear here and I know of at least one who appears later in SAVSCO 119, his sister Siobhan.

CONAN THE BARBARIAN #235 (August 1990)
By Michael Higgins & Ron Lim

APPEARANCES:
Conan, Jorrma, Corin (corpse), Greshan (corpse), a barmaid, Cimmerians (inc Dryden), Vanir (inc Balthus), Aquilonians, Acegra (bts, teleported her demons away) & her demons

SYNOPSIS:
The demons suddenly vanish and Conan holds a funeral for his parents. Conan and Jorrma leave to join an army to fight the “hyperboreans” and find some Vanir. Conan comes up with a plan, Jorrma joins the Vanir army and Conan leaves. Conan learns the Cimmerians will be attacking the Vanir tonight and offers to be a scout. Jorrma sends Conan a signal but is caught and tossed in jail; his guard Balthus takes Jorrma’s protective necklace. Jorrma hypnotizes the lady who brings him dinner and she frees him. He’s able to open the gates but the lady is killed. Conan and the Cimmerians attack, but Jorrma is upset over the lady’s death and explodes. Vanerium is destroyed and the Cimmerians flee. Balthus and Jorrma survive. Jorrma is reunited with Conan and while they celebrate some Aquilonians try to recruit them to help overthrow their king. Conan declines.

NOTE:
Jorrma is spelled “Jormma” once here.

CONAN THE BARBARIAN #236 (September 1990)
By Michael Higgins & Rodney Ramos

APPEARANCES:
Conan (also in fb), Jorrma (also in fb), Acegra (in fb), a barmaid (Melanie, also in fb), castle guards (also in fb, inc Brudas), dancing ladies (in fb), rats (in fb)

FLASHBACK:
Conan and Jorrma are caught stealing and put into a cage in a river where they’re attacked by rats. They manage to escape, but one of the guards is fooled by Acegra (from afar) to think the pair betrayed him in the past. Meanwhile, the barmaid Conan likes is searching for Conan and Acegra sends the castle guard toward her. He overpowers her and prepares to rape her.
SYNOPSIS:
Conan and Jorrma flee the guards and stop to rest, wondering where Melanie is. They split up to find her and Jorrma does, but he’s overpowered and captured. Melanie manages to escape but Jorrma is seconds away from being executed.

NOTE:
Brudas is named in COB 238.

CONAN THE BARBARIAN #237 (October 1990)
By Michael Higgins & Gary Hartle

APPEARANCES:
Conan, Jorrma, Melanie, Acegra, Nuraldin (Acegra’s demon master), castle guards, a warrior

SYNOPSIS:
The executioner turns out to be Conan in disguise and he and Jorrma escape. They find Melanie and go skinny dipping where they notice a serpent tattoo on Jorrma’s back. He doesn’t want to talk about it, and gets jealous when Conan and Melanie start fooling around. Meanwhile, Acegra sends a warrior toward Conan. She summons her brother who is tired of waiting for Conan to die, and tells Acegra to set Jorrma after Conan. That night, Jorrma’s tattoo comes alive and attacks Conan. As Conan fights Jorrma the warrior arrives and attacks Conan. Jorrma turns the warrior into a monster. As Acegra watches from afar she muses that it was her brother’s idea to create Jorrma in the first place. Conan kills the warrior and Jorrma returns to human form, with no memory of what happened.

CONAN THE BARBARIAN #238 (November 1990)
By Michael Higgins & Gary Hartle

APPEARANCES:
Conan (also in fb), Jorrma (also in fb), Melanie (also in fb), Acegra (in fb), King Falkoh (of Zamora, in fb), Queen Elesba (in fb), Brudas (the castle guard from COB 236, also in fb), Zamoran army (in fb), townspeople, Prince Arak (Elesba’s son, mentioned, assassinated)

FLASHBACK:
King Falkoh is assassinated and Queen Elesba makes sure everyone knows she’s upset about it. Also, she blames Conan (wut). Conan, Jorrma and Melanie get out of town but they’re spotted by Brudas (from COB 236), who attacks Jorrma. Jorrma is overpowered and leads Brudas to Conan and the trio is captured. Melanie frees Jorrma and Conan is tortured. The pair watch as Conan is dragged away and tossed off a cliff.
SYNOPSIS:
Conan is tossed over a cliff. Meanwhile, Jorrma and Melanie wonder if it’s true that Conan is dead. Later, Jorrma uses his magic box to go to the astral plane where he finds Conan’s spirit. Jorrma and Melanie follow it and find Conan’s body in the river.

CONAN THE BARBARIAN #239 (December 1990)
By Michael Higgins & Gary Hartle

APPEARANCES:
Conan, Jorrma, Melanie, Acegra, Nuraldin, Brudas, demons

FLASHBACK:
Recap of last issue.
SYNOPSIS:
Jorrma uses his magic powers to try and bring Conan back to life. Meanwhile, Acegra contacts her brother, who tells her Jorrma is currently bringing Conan back to life. Jorrma summons demons and one flies into Conan. Conan returns as an indestructible savage beast and attacks Brudas. Melanie is worried but Jorrma seems pleased. Conan kills Brudas but Melanie realizes Conan has been possessed by a demon.

CONAN THE BARBARIAN #240 (January 1991)
By Justin Arthur & Gary Hartle

APPEARANCES:
King Conan (also in fb), Conn, Queen Zenobia, Jorrma (in fb), Melanie (in fb), Acegra (in fb, also in fb-fb), Llarn (Acegra’s brother, in fb-fb) & their subjects (in fb-fb), Nuraldin (in fb, also in fb-fb), a demon (in fb)

FLASHBACK:
Melanie tries to calm Conan down and he knocks her out. Jorrma tries to fight him but is knocked out. Jorrma wakes up in an altar where Conan is preparing to kill him under Acegra’s orders. Conan resists so Acegra tells them her story and reveals Jorrma was created to kill Conan. Acegra orders Jorrma to kill Conan, but Melanie jumps in the way and dies. Jorrma kills Acegra and Nuraldin appears. Nuraldin kills Jorma and Nuraldin dies from rapid aging. Conan holds a funeral for Jorrma and Melanie and wanders off (fb). Two hundred years ago, Acegra and her brother Llarn ruled in a far east place, routinely making sacrifices to Nuraldin. They perform a ritual to see the future, but Llarn ends up possessed by Nuraldin; they see a vision anyway, a future where a 30-year old Conan kills them both. Acegra gain more magic and becomes un-aging (fb-fb). Recap of COB 232-234. Recap of COB 1. Conan, not quite 30 years old, makes his was from Turan toward Khoraja (fb).
SYNOPSIS:
King Conan finishes telling stories from his youth to Conn. Zenobia arrives and sends Conn to bed. Zenobia points out Conan’s stories change a little every time he tells them, but Conan just laughs it off.

NOTE:
Conn is nine, as it turns out.

Conan arrived in Khoraja in COB 223.

Hrmn. Jorrma and Conan's father were concieved at roughly the same time, and yet Jorrma and Conan are the same age. Shouldn't Jorrma be Corin's age? Also, if the point was to stop Conan from killing Acegra when he was 30, why not just kill his dad? Or his grandfather?
