SHIELD (2015) 9 flashbacks to the sixties

Post by Leoparis »

First story "The Man Called D.E.A.T.H."
Mark Waid, Lee Ferguson, Paul Mounts with Jack Kirby and Jim Steranko.

Synopsis:
flashback: Fury infiltrated a Hydra base and recovered a file on the man called D.E.A.T.H. He tells about his one-man raid to Dugan and goes to the barber shop to see how the contessa is going with the interrogation of a captured Hydra agent. The agent says the file is unreadable and Fury says to get the ESPers on it. Then he goes to ask Jones and Sitwell what they found but the file in indecipherable and some pages are hundreds of years old. Fury explained the acronym as Da Vinci Elevating Agents to Helm.
Flashback Characters:
Fury
Dugan
Contessa
Gabe Jones
Sitwell
barber shop agents
Hydra agents
SHIELD agents

reminder flashbacks to Hickman's SHIELD series:
Imhotep, Apocalypse and Moon Knight 27th century B.C. Egypt thwarting an alien invasion (14:1) = SHIELD 1 (6-9)
Zhang Heng in China (14:2) = SHIELD 1 (13-14)
Galileo repelling a "devourer of worlds" (15:1) = SHIELD 1 (21-23)

Da Vinci in his time recording a future event (a male holder of the Phoenix force) (15:2) new scene
Da Vinci inducting Fury to SHIELD (= ST 135)

Synopsis current story: Coulson received a messengered envelope with one surviving page of a field report about the man called D.E.A.T.H. with a photograph. He asks Nick Fury Jr, Daisy Johnson, Tony Stark and Maria Hill but they claim ignorance. Coulson goes to the rendezvous at the old barber shop. In the office he is confronted by Da Vinci who tells him of the history of the brotherhood of Shield and how he has personally inducted past directors of SHIELD. Coulson is dubious and states that SHIELD already has a director. Da Vinci says Maria Hill's body will be found in six hours. Coulson warns May and with Fitz, Simmons, Daisy, they thwart the Hydra assassination team. Later Coulson, Hill and Fury Jr ponder about the unreadable file.

The story takes place before the original defeat of Hydra. Based on the appearance of the Contessa, the photomontage, the re-use of Steranko art, I place it in 1967.

Second story "Dugan Lives!"
Al Ewing, Stefano Caselli

flashbacks: "Dugan born late 1918, joined circus at 14 as a strongman (shown) and part-time prizefighter" (4:2) new scene
"Ex-army, U.S. and British. Saw action in WWII, Korea and the home front." (Fury & Dugan shooting) (4:3) generic scene
"1965, helped form S.H.I.E.L.D. Insisted on an active role despite being well into his forties--" (Dugan as SHIELD agent) (4:4) generic scene
"until his death in August of '66" (Dugan dying in Fury's arms) (4:5) (= OSINS 5-FB)
Sitwell in uniform introducing himself to Dugan. "Commander Dugan, Sir? Jasper Sitwell. It's an honor." (8:3) new scene
Jasper Sitwell dead on a slab (8:5) (= WSOL 10)

Synopsis: Hill orders Dr Kraye to revive a Dugan LMD. He's introduced to S.T.A.K.E. agent Martin Reyna and objects when seeing prisoners Man-Thing, Orrgo, Manphibian and zombie Jasper Sitwell. Dugan, Sitwell and Reyna are sent to respond to a monster sighting, Teen Abomination. Unknown to Dugan, Dracula is STAKE's prisoner.

This is a pilot for the Howling Commandos of SHIELD series.

Note: The scene of Sitwell introducing himself to Dugan does not match the original introduction in ST 144. This comforts the notion that there was a Sitwell in the 60s ("Class of 66" according to ST 144-145), and another one on the sliding time scale (whose introduction we see here). The story in DEF4 9 dated 1967 mentions a Sitwell. A Sitwell is also seen in SGTF@ 3 at the time of the Vietnam War. In SGTF 36, during WWII, a Jason Sitwell says he'd be proud to have his son serve under Fury. His son would have the right age in the 60s to serve under Fury.

The "Class of '66" Sitwell in ST 144-145 is thus the senior Sitwell and the Druid story takes place in the 1960s. Since all the recent stories of SHIELD set in the 1960s only mentioned Hydra I originally placed only ST 135-141 in the sixties. But I have reworked it up to 145 (Druid). Sitwell is first called "Junior" by Fury in ST 146, another indication that there was a senior one.
(If the Sitwell in ST 144-145 was the modern one this would mean that this Dugan unit misidentifies the zombie Sitwell with the senior Sitwell.)
