Defenders (2011) 9-12 SHIELD Cold War flashbacks

Post by Leoparis »

Multiple references to the sixties, to Mary Quant, to John Coltrane having just died and fashions place this in late July 1967.
In addition the DEF4 sections have been placed between the Druid story (ST 145) and its aftermath (DF 2.4) and the 1966 issues from Bitter March have been placed after the 1967 parts of DEF4.

For Strucker DEF4 9 follows the 1961 flashbacks in SECWARR. UX 161-FB (at the time of David Haller's conception) needs to take place after UTSM -1 (at the time of Peter Parker's conception) since Parker is older than David.

For Fury the whole reorganization is explained elsewhere. Only the relevant parts are made visible.

I really don't see how the setting of Defenders v 4 #9 can be considered part of the mainstream Marvel universe. Apart from Hitler appearing still alive and (sort of) well, the Nick Fury of this reality is kidnapped by the Defenders in this issue, is taken back with them to Earth-11127, and (to his chagrin) is destroyed along with them and the rest of that universe in #12. This is obviously incompatible with the history of Earth-616 Fury.

For what it's worth, the Marvel fandom wiki gives this reality the separate designation of Earth-12109, presumably based on the publication date and issue number of Defenders v 4 #9.

Yep. Also, EARTH-12109 came from the Appendix/Master List.

And hey, just how great was DEF4? I mean, just the gutter messages were awesome all by themselves.

Thanks to a collector I saw some of the Pussycat stories translated here in Italy in certain adult magazines during the 1970s.
On the Italian database of Marvel publications with which I collaborate they have done a great job of indexing the stories of Pussycat, I think that not even the US sites have collected all this information.

The Adventures of Pussycat tab is this:

I would love for someone to index all of the Pussycat stories from Martin Goodman's men's adventure magazines and get those stories added to the MCP.

I'll put it on my list of things to do, but if anyone wants to do it first, go for it. :)

I loved all the shout-outs in the team that protected the Concordance Engines from the Confederates of the Curious. Besides Namor's parents Len and Fen, there were:
John Aman: Bill Everett's Amazing-Man from Centaur Publications' Amazing-Man Comics (1939–41) and Stars and Stripes Comics (1941)
Nemo, the Rogue Captain: from Jules Verne's 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (1870) and The Mysterious Island (1874)
Judex, the Shadow: played by René Cresté in the French film serials Judex (1916) and La Nouvelle Mission de Judex (1917)
Musidora, the Thief: named after the actress who played Marie Verdier in Judex and Irma Vep in Les Vampires (1915–16)
Orissa Kravinov, the Aviatrix: her surname and the lion's head on the plastron of her kurtka make it pretty clear she is related to Kraven the Hunter
Farraday Bobbs, the Writer: "Faraday Bobbs, Free Lance" appeared in six stories by Louis Joseph Vance in The Popular Magazine (April–September 1906) — quite proud of myself for catching that one
Ivar, the Strong: any ideas?

The only Ivar that comes to mind was a villain in an episode of Johnny Quest. Could it be him? He has the same bald head and moustache..
