Savage Sword of Conan #25

SAVAGE SWORD OF CONAN #25 (December 1977)
By Roy Thomas & Dick Giordano

APPEARANCES:
Conan (also in fb), Valeria (in fb), Thutmekri (in fb), Zargheba (also in fb), King of Keshan (in fb), Princess Yelaya (oracle of Alkmeenon, also in fb), Bit-Yakin (mummy, also in fb) & his servants (also in fb), Muriela (also as Yelaya, also in fb), priests of Keshan (inc Gorulga (also in fb), Gwarungra (also in fb)), Keshan residents (in fb)

FLASHBACK:
Recap of SAVT 2-3. Conan and Valeria part ways. Conan travels to Keshan where he’s searching for the Jewels of Gwahlur. He gets a job training the Keshan army but is angry when Thutmekti arrives. Thutmekri makes a deal with the king of Keshan and wants some of the jewels Conan is looking for. Conan interjects and a priest says he’ll have to check with the oracle before the king decides. Conan overhears some priests talk about where the oracle is and he leaves (days ago). Bit-Yakin arrived in Alkmeenon and meets Princess Yelaya. She will eventually die and be placed in stasis and the palace will fall into ruin (a hundred years ago). Conan spots Zargheba and Muriela in Akbitana (a year ago). Zargheba brings Muriela to the palace and swaps her with Yelaya, hoping to trick the priests of Keshan (hours ago). Bit-Yakin “poses” as Yelaya so people will bring him food and he lives alone in the palace. When he eventually dies his cannibalistic servants mummify him (a hundred years ago).
SYNOPSIS:
Conan climbs a mountain; on his way up he finds a mummy in an alcove and takes the scroll in its hand. He reaches the top and finds the palace of Alkmeenon. He searches the place and finds a dead, un-rotted woman but no jewels. He reads the scroll looking for clues and learns about Princess Yelaya, the oracle of Alkmeenon. Conan hears a noise and investigates, but the floor falls out from under him and he lands in an underground river. He manages to swim against the current to a ladder. He returns to hide in the throne room but is shocked when Yelaya awakens. He spots a birthmark on her hip and recognizes her as Muriela, Zargheba’s dancing girl. Conan tells her what to say to the priests and searches for Zargheba and only finds his decapitated head. The priests arrive and Conan follows. Muriela does what Conan told her to do, but after the priests leave she vanishes and the real Yelaya returns. Conan searches for Muriela, watches as one priest fools the others into giving the jewels to Thutmekri, then he kills the priest. He finds Muriela and frees her. They watch as the priests are massacred by the servants of Bit-Yakin and escape without the jewels.

NOTE:
Adapted from “Jewels of Gwahlur” by REH.

The intro map says Conan is likely 38 here. So the “one year ago” flashback would make him 37. Also, he’s in Shem. I’m thinking between SAVSCO 73 & 122. Also, Conan’s in Stygia in SAVSCO 122, which may be a good place for M/SAGA 1 (which currently doesn’t agree in Conan’s and Red Sonja’s chronologies, but it’s fine in Kulan Gath’s). To be fair, this may get moved again. We’ll see what happens.

2nd Story:
By Don Glut & Steve Gan

This Solomon Kane story is already in the MCP.

NOTE:
The letters page has costume photos! Fans Shirley McClure and Roger Sands as Red Sonja and “a barbarian,” and Chris Lundry as Red Sonja and Angelique Trouvere as Satana.

SAVAGE SWORD OF CONAN #26 (January 1978)
By Roy Thomas & John Buscema

APPEARANCES:
Conan, Balthus, Tiberius, Gov. Valannus, Fort Tuscelan soldiers (inc Gallus, some also in fb), Picts (inc Zogar Sag), Swamp Demon, sabretooth tiger, ape, ghost snake

FLASHBACK:
Conan’s men are ambushed by Picts.
SYNOPSIS:
On the Aquilonian border during a skirmish with the Picts, Conan meets Balthus. They chat until they hear screams. They find Tiberius dead, and Conan is convinced it’s the work of the Pict wizard Zogar Sag. They return to Fort Tuscelan where Conan updates Gov. Valannus on the Picts. He asks Conan to gather some men and kill Zogar Sag. They sneak into a Pict camp but Balthus is captured. When he wakes up tied to a stake, he sees the decapitated heads of the men that followed Conan, and another captive who tells him they were ambushed. Zogar Sag arrives and dances before ordering the Picts into the woods. A sabretooth tiger arrives and eats the other captive. As the cat drags its dinner away a massive ghost snake arrives; as it prepares to attack Balthus a spear flies through its head. As it thrashes around as it dies it crushes several Picts. Conan frees Balthus and they go into Zogar Sag’s hut; he’s not there but Conan kills his ape. They get out of there but are being chased by Picts.

NOTE:
Adapted from “Beyond the Black River” by REH.

Followed by “The Other Queen of the Black Coast,” an article about the unauthorized Mexican Conan comic by J. Kstro, which pre-dated Marvel’s Conan, by Fred Blosser.

2nd Story:

This Solomon Kane vs. Dracula story is already in the MCP.

SAVAGE SWORD OF CONAN #27 (February 1978)
By Roy Thomas & John Buscema

APPEARANCES:
Conan, Balthus, Gov. Valannus (bts), Picts (inc Zogar Sag), settlers, Fort Tuscelan soldiers, Swamp Demon, ghost snake, leopard, panther, Slasher (stray dog)

FLASHBACK:
Recap of SAVSCO 26.
SYNOPSIS:
As the ghost snake continues to die Conan and Balthus continue to escape into the forest. Conan notices they’re being stalked by a leopard so he kills it with his axe. Knowing Zogar Sag will send more animals against them, Conan draws Jhebbal Sag’s symbol on the ground to protect them. It works on a panther to Balthus’ amazement. Conan surmises that Zogar Sag has united the various Pict tribes and will attack Fort Tuscelan soon. When they reach the river, they’re attacked. After killing the Picts, they retreat into the woods. Conan calls to a Pict in a boat; he kills him and they use the boat to quickly cross the river and continue toward the fort. They find a stray dog (Slasher) then find the fort already under siege by Picts. Conan decides to try and warn the settlers because the fort is lost. They split up to make better time. Balthus wakes and sends settlers to Velitrium, fighting Picts along the way with Slasher but eventually they’re surrounded and killed. Meanwhile, Conan finds the men and sends them to Velitrium as well. As they travel Conan meets the Swamp Demon; he explains he’s Zogar Sag’s brother, and if one is injured so is the other. He decapitates the beast and flees. Later in Velitrium, Conan learns that Zogar Sag died suddenly with no wounds. Conan swears revenge against the Picts over the death of Balthus and Slasher.

NOTE:
Adapted from “Beyond the Black River” by REH.

Conan learned about Jhebbal Sag’s symbol in COB 95 (or rather, will in a year).

Followed by “Conan the Syndicated,” a preview of the newspaper strip.

Followed in turn by “Shadow of the White Wolf,” a review of REH’s first hero El Borak by Fred Blosser.

SAVAGE SWORD OF CONAN #28 (March 1978)
By Roy Thomas & John Buscema

APPEARANCES:
Conan (also in fb), Vallon, Brokk, Ortellus, Zuagirs (in fb, inc Dirdar, Salim, others in fb), Achmet Mitkhal & his men, Alwazir (also in fb), Umwallah (inc Shalan the Merciless & his riders (inc Massina))

FLASHBACK:
The super rich Alwazir gave away his fortune to the poor and went to live in a cave to find spiritual enlightenment, hiring Conan and his Zuagirs for safe passage. The only things he kept were some fancy gems, “the blood of the gods” (a year ago).
SYNOPSIS:
Three men torture a former Zuagir about the location of Alwazir. He begins to tell them but is killed by another Zuagir; though injured and dying he tells Conan about the mess. Riding through the desert hoping to beat the three men to Alwazir, Conan’s horse is killed by an Umwallah ambush; he kills the man and continues on foot. Finding an oasis, Conan kills the Umwallah who control it. Arriving at the mountain he dropped Alwazir at a year ago, Conan is surprised there’s no sign of him. He takes a nap and is awoken by a crazy man attacking him. Conan eventually realizes its Alwazir, knocks him out and ties him up. Conan feels sick that the philosopher is now a crazed madman. Vallon arrives, says his men are dead and the Umwalla are after him. The two fight with arrows against the attacking Shalan and his Umwallah riders, and later swords. During the battle Alwazir escapes and kills Shalan and the Umwallah flee in terror. Vallon tries to kill Conan and dies as a result. Alwazir is more lucid after being knocked on the head and says its been a month since he drank strange water. He agrees to return to civilization with Conan and reveals the only reason he kept the gems was to throw them into the Vilayet Sea.

NOTE:
Freely adapted from “The Blood of the Gods” by REH.

The only spot I’m seeing for the “one year ago” fb is between SAVSCO 6-7.

Conan assumed Alwazir was driven mad by loneliness; turns out it was magic water.

Followed by “Red Sonja – Banned in Boston!,” a photo essay by Alison Scott featuring Wendy Snow as Red Sonja getting kicked out of the Boston Globe Book Festival for being too scantily dressed.

SAVAGE SWORD OF CONAN #29 (April 1978)
By Roy Thomas, Christy Marx & Ernie Chan

APPEARANCES:
Conan (in fb), All-Mother (also in fb) & her priestesses (inc Te Kortinea, others in fb ), Ra Morgana (All-Mother’s daughter with Conan, also in fb) & her lover, a wizard (in fb) & his various monsters (in fb), sharks (in fb)

FLASHBACK:
A young woman in a society of priestesses is being trained to be their All-Mother. A wizard stops by one day and abducts her. He chains her to his bed so he can rest before he has his way with her. She sends her astral form forth to look for help and finds Conan. She returns to her body and warns the wizard; he sends monsters against Conan while she lowers a magic rope so the barbarian can enter the tower. The wizard knocks her out. Conan tosses one of the monster corpses into the tower’s moat to distract the sharks while he swims across. Conan enters the tower and the wizard throws poison gas at him, but the young priestess wakes up and uses her magic to blow it away. Conan kills the wizard, who died in terror and begging for his life. Conan carries her outside and they have a good time together. The next day they return to her palace. Conan tries to convince her not to live trapped within a monastery and roam the world, but she knew nothing of the world and was afraid. They part ways and she never saw Conan again. She told the priestesses she defeated the wizard alone, then later performed a fertility ritual and claimed she was impregnated by a god. Some months later she gives birth to Ra Morgana (20 years ago).
SYNPOSIS:
Ra Morgana has been caught with a man and is brought to the All-Mother. The priestesses demand Morgana be punished but they’re ordered to leave. Now that Morgana is a woman, the All-Mother tells her a story that she’s told no one else. The All-Mother tells her daughter she regrets her decision to stay and gives her permission to leave with her lover. The next day she does as her mother watches, wondering if she’ll ever leave to explore the northern hills.

NOTE:
The priestesses’ magic is song-based.

Ra Morgana has her father’s hair and eyes.

Followed by “Presenting: The Hyborian Players!” by Frank Thorne – The Wizard, a photo essay about costuming as Red Sonja. Featuring photos of Wendy Pini, Linda Behrle, Wendy Snow and Angelique Trouvere as various Red Sonjas, Dianne De Kelb as Red Sonya, Frank Thorne as the Wizard, David Mead as Mikal, Walt Rittenhouse as Retlaw and Roy Thomas for fun.

2nd Story:
By Frank Thorne

APPEARANCES:
The Wizard, four Red Sonjas, Red Sonya, Mikal, Retlaw

SYNOPSIS:
The Wizard calls for various Red Sonjas to see who the real one is. They all prove their mettle in various ways and the Wizard can’t make up his mind. The Sonjas (and Sonya) call him a buffoon and a quack and he vanishes. The Sonjas (and Sonya) decide to get drunk to forget about the whole mess.

NOTE:
Obviously not canon, but a great deal of fun. The Sonjas are based on Wendy Pini, Linda Behrle, Wendy Snow and Angelique Trouvere, and Sonya on Dianne De Kelb. Mikal on David Mead and Retlaw on Walt Rittenhouse.

Followed by an essay by Roy Thomas, saying farewell to the recently passed John Verpoorten.

SAVAGE SWORD OF CONAN #30 (May 1978)
By Roy Thomas & Frank Brunner

APPEARANCES:
King Conan (also in fb), his army (also in fb) & his harem, King Amalrus & his Ophirean army, Emperor Strabonus & his Kothian army (inc Gen. Arbanus), Tsotha-Lanti (Strabonus’s wizard, also in fb) & his servants (inc Shukeli), Prince Arpello (of Pellia), Pelias (rival wizard to Tsotha-Lanti), King Khossus V (of Koth, in fb), King Akhutho (of Koth, in fb), Demon-Lord of the Dark Valley (in fb), Timara (in fb), Khorshemish residents, Shamar residents, Aquilonians, Poitanians (inc Trocero, Prospero, knights), Shemites (in fb), Satha (giant serpent), various grotesque horrors, winged beast, giant eagle

FLASHBACK:
King Conan and his army leave for Ophir but they’re ambushed by archers. Also, a recap of Conan’s life as a barbarian, mercenary, pirate and king. 3,000 years ago, King Khossus established Koth. He found some catacombs and terrified by them, closed them off. Centuries later, King Akhutho explored them and closed them off again. Years ago, Tsotha-Lanti opened the tombs and mastered their secrets. Decades ago, the Demon-Lord of the Dark Valley mated with the dancing girl Timara, producing two sons, Tsotha-Lanti and Laza-Lanti.
SYNOPSIS:
Kings Almarus and Strabonus have joined forces to attack Aquilonia and all their forces are fighting. Strabonus’ wizard Tsotha-Lanti paralyzes Conan and he’s taken captive to the wizard’s Scarlet Citadel in Khorshemish. They want Conan to give Aquilonia to Prince Arpello of Pellia; in return Conan will get 5,000 golden lunas and a horse. Conan refuses, of course. He’s chained in a dungeon where an eighty-foot serpent prepares to eat him. The snake is distracted when one of Tsotha-Lanti’s servants enters the dungeon; he holds a grudge against the pirate Amra and taunts him with the keys to his chains, but he takes too much pleasure in it and is eaten by the snake. Conan gets the keys and frees himself. As he searches for a way out of the dungeon he encounters various grotesque horrors, humans transformed by Tsotha-Lanti. He finds a man trapped by a lotus tree and frees him; he’s Pelias, a rival wizard to Tsotha-Lanti, and has been a prisoner for ten years. He tells Conan the history of the Scarlet Citadel’s dungeon. Pelias tames the giant snake (Satha) then makes a dead guard open the gate to the dungeon. They use a crystal to see Tarantia under siege so Pelias summons a winged beast so Conan can join the fight. Conan returns, kills Prince Arpello and announces his return. Leading his regrouped army to Shamar to rejoin the fight. Almarus is killed by a Poitanian archer and Strabonus is killed by Conan. Tsotha-Lanti flees but his horse is startled by a giant eagle and throws the wizard off. Conan decapitates the wizard but he doesn’t die; instead, his body flails about searching for his head. The giant eagle returns and flies away with the wizard’s head. Conan wonder where some wine is.

NOTE:
Adapted from “The Scarlet Citadel” by REH.

Strabonus dies here, but a Strabonus later appears in KCO 51. Must be his successor.

Followed by “A Gazeteer of the Hyborian Age,” an ethnogeographical dictionary of the principal peoples of the age compiled by Lee N. Falconer.

The letters page has a missive from John Ostrander.

Conan: Serpent War 1 reveals that the giant serpent Satha is in fact Set under another name. As Satha, Set also appears in Supernatural Thrillers 3, which acts as a prelude to Conan: Serpent War 1. Bet you want to go and read those now, don't you! :-P
