Captain America, Black Panther & Hulk in A 51 (11)

Post by StrayLamb »

On page 11 of Avengers 51, the Collector makes use of his Cosmic Viewer, which collects and records the most recent endeavors of whomever he focuses upon.

In panel 1, the Collector focuses upon Captain America, and although he says Cap is currently battling alongside the Panther in Africa, he also states that Captain America “may not yet have returned to” America. If the scene he’s watching is current, why would the Collector wonder if Cap’s had time to return to America? The Cosmic Viewer collects and records the most recent activities it’s viewed, making these recordings available to the Collector. Therefore, the scene being witnessed by the Collector is in the very recent past, making it a flashback.

In panel 2, the Collector focuses on the Hulk, finding that “he was last observed entering eternal Asgard.” It was the Cosmic Viewer which observed Hulk entering Asgard, and recorded the event which the Collector witnesses in this panel, making this scene also a flashback.

In panel 3, the Collector focuses on Iron Man, and comments that “at this very moment, he returns to the city…” The Collector has tuned in on Iron Man, witnessing his return to the city just as the Cosmic Viewer is observing and recording the event, so this scene is occuring right now. This is substantiated by the Collector sending Thor to retrieve Iron Man at once.

Furthermore, the A 51 (4:1)-BTS for Captain America can’t be occuring at the point where it’s listed in Cap and Panther’s chronologies. Goliath and Hawkeye head to Jan’s apartment to tell her they’ve received a message from Cap which he wants them all to hear. As we learn later, in A 51 (20), Cap’s message had been about having the Black Panther replace him in the Avengers, but Cap doesn’t broach Panther about this until CA 100, page 20, between panels 4 & 5, after he’s fought alongside the Panther, and found him to be a worthy replacement.

At the point where A 51 (4:1)-BTS is listed for Cap & Panther, Cap’s just landed in Wakanda, is still distrustful of the Black Panther, and hasn’t yet fought alongside him, so he wouldn’t be contacting the Avengers about him at this point.

This is how events appear to be unfolding here..

Avengers 51 (1-3:2) [Goliath, Wasp & Hawkeye at the lab]
Tales of Suspense 97/2 [Cap flies to Wakanda]
Tales of Suspense 98/1 [Cap meets the Black Panther, learning he’s King of all the Wakanda; they fight together against the mercenaries]
Tales of Suspense 99/2 [More of the same]
Captain America 100 (1-20:4) [More of the same]
[Red] Hulk 18 (6:1)-FB [Thor flies over NYC]
Avengers 51 (8:3-9:2)-FB [Thor flies above NYC to investigate the Collector’s ship]
[Cap speaks to Panther about replacing him in the Avengers] {This occurs off-panel}
[Cap contacts Goliath & Hawkeye, who head over to Jan’s apartment/ ref. A 51 (4:1)] {This occurs off-panel}
Avengers 51 (3:3-19) [Avengers vs the Collector]
Captain America 100 (20:5-20:7) [Cap asks the Panther if he’s considered his offer, as they fly from the African coast]
Avengers 51 (20) [Cap contacts the Avengers for the second time, from an island off the African coast, nominating the Panther as his replacement – this time, Goliath, Wasp, Hawkeye, Thor & Iron Man are all present]

I suggest the following changes..
