Marvel characters' taste in real-world pop music

Post by Clive_Reston »

Spinning off from the discussion over at http://chronologyproject.com/phpbb2/vie ... &start=165 (and trying not to derail the actual chronology going on over there):

I think the only previous sign we've gotten of the Beast's musical taste is in X-Factor #2, where Vera Cantor rhapsodizes about Elvis Costello, and Hank McCoy unconvincingly claims to be into him too. (And then Bobby Drake namedrops Mercedes Sosa.)

Peter Parker definitely likes Costello too--he sings a bit of "Oliver's Army" in Marvel Team-Up Annual #4, and names him first among his favorites (as well as the Costello-associated Nick Lowe and Dave Edmunds) in Spider-Man #22. And Bernie Rosenthal is also into Costello (in Captain America #249), and sings along with Eurythmics (in Captain America #294).

Shang-Chi and Leiko Wu are, of course, major Fleetwood Mac fans.

Domino, fittingly, likes X (per X-Force #86), and is also pretty into African pop music (X-Force #92).

Hypnolovewheel (who included Marvel assistant editor Dan Cuddy) turned up a few times in '90s Marvel comics; in Amazing Spider-Man #347, Flash Thompson has tickets for himself and Felicia Hardy to go to one of their shows.

Foggy Nelson is singing a bit of Liz Phair's "Supernova" in Daredevil #354.

Chumbawamba's "Tubthumping" is of course She-Hulk's favorite song.

The original Dazzler series suggested that she was into Barnes & Barnes and the Plasmatics, but didn't like Romeo Void. (All of those seem like fairly unlikely reference points, given what we know about her own music, but at least Barnes & Barnes had a Marvel connection via Bill Mumy.)

Others?

A recent issue of Moon Knight (somewhere in MK 194-196 I think) reveals that Marc Spector is a fan of Dazzler and STEELTOWN ROCKERS! I'm glad to see they put out at least one album. :)

Also, follow the link to see what real-world musicians the band members like (and don't).

Deadpool mentions he has Wu-Tang lyrics running thru his head in Deadpool: Assassin 1, and he has Stan Bush's The Touch on his phone in Deadpool: Assassin 2. In DP:ASSN 6, Wade parodies Love Machine by The Miracles.

Uncanny X-Men #246 shows that Dazzler is a U2 fan, and plays the "Rattle and Hum" album (on cassette).

One issue of Dazzler (17?) has her practicing a cover of Bob Dylan's "Like a Rolling Stone"

In War of the Realms: War Scrolls 3/3, the Punisher comments that Joni Mitchell's Court and Spark is the greatest album of all time, but Blade says only in a world without Miles Davis' Bitches Brew.

Doc Samson is listening to Leonard Cohen's Songs of Love and Hate in Immortal Hulk 15.

Hawkeye admires Al Hirt (Avengers 31).

In Spider-Man: Legacy of Evil, Mark Raxton, aka the Molten Man, mentions that he knows all the verses of Miss Otis Regrets.
