Julia Carpenter's coma

Post by Michael »

The placement of the issues involving Julia Carpenter's coma are weird. Let's go through them one by one:
SCRS2 6- Julia and Rachel are going to the zoo. Julia gets a vision and they learn Shathra is after Kaine.
Amazing Spider-Man 695-696- Julia falls into a coma and is taken to Columbia University Medical Center as a Jane Doe. The lack of ID is deliberate on her part.
SCRS2 15- Julia is in Lenox Hill Hospital with Rachel watching over her. She says Kaine's name.
SCRS2 16- A letter from Julia warning Kaine of Shathra adressed to "K. Parker" has arrived at the hotel where Kaine is staying but the staff is unsure which guest it is for. Kaine's girlfriend Annabelle destroys the letter.
ASM3 15- Julia awakes from her coma at Columbia University Medical Center. The nurse describes her as a Jane Doe.
DD4 16-18- Julia and Daredevil fight Kingpin and the Shroud.
Now you'd think the sequence of events is this- After SCRS2 6, Julia sends the letter to Kaine at the hotel. Then she falls into her coma. She is briefly transferred to Lenox Hill Hospital for testing or something, where Rachel sneaks in to see her. She is then returned to Columbia University Medical Center, where she wakes up. And after that she and Matt fight Kingpin and the Shroud. Especially since DD4 16-18 were published after ASM3 15.
However. Julia's chronology is listed as follows:

SCRS2 6
ASM 695
ASM 696
SCRS2 15
SCRS2 16-FB-BTS
DD4 16
DD4 17-FB
DD4 18
ASM3 15

The idea seems to be that after SCRS2 15, Julia wakes up from her coma, sends the letter to Kaine, fights Kingpin and the Shroud with Matt and then falls back into her coma behind the scenes and loses her identification again and then wakes up again in ASM3 15.
This makes no sense. For starters, the idea that Julia and Rachel didn't warn Kaine about Shathra immediately after SCRS2 6 makes them look like sociopaths. Also. , in SCRS2 16, a hotel staffer says "We STILL can't figure out who it's for". That makes it sound like the hotel has been trying to figure out who the letter is for for quite some time.
(As an aside, I don't think it makes sense to try to place letters or messages from precooks like Julia or Destiny in their chronology in most circumstances. We have no way of knowing WHEN the letter or message was really written since they can see the future and any context clues are therefore meaningless.)
Plus, if the current chronology is correct, we have to assume that Julia spends time as a Jane Doe at Columbia University Medical Center, wakes up and then winds up there a second time without any of the staff recognizing her. And why didn't she have ID the second time? Of the two people she was worried might be after her, if the current chronology is correct, Dr. Octopus was dead and the Shroud was in jail.
Apparently the reason for this ordering of Julia's chronology is Alcatraz:

The Shroud was using Alcatraz in Daredevil and Iron Man was using Alcatraz in AXIS,so it was decided that the Daredevil stories had to end before Alcatraz. "Alcatraz is not a time share" as Col_Fury put it. But that decision made Julia's chronology completely nonsensical.

Ok, I did some more digging. In PROWL2 2, Julia is in Alcatraz. She says "A little parting gift from the Shroud. He caused some trouble for the fine citizens of San Francisco last year and left his tech behind when Daredevil finally locked him up. I've been using it ever since." This confirms that (a) DD4 16-18 are meant to be Julia's last appearance before the Prowler series without any stays in comas and (b)if Julia's been using Alcatraz ever since without any mention of Iron Man, then Tony's use of Alcatraz had to take place BEFORE the Shroud's. So DD4-13-18 need to be placed after Axis and Superior Iron Man.
BTW, in ASM 797 there's a redhead in the Columbia University Medical Center coma ward who MIGHT be Julia.

You mean ASM 697 (not 797) and I wouldn’t say she MIGHT be Julia; she definitely IS Julia, considering Spider-Man is just thinking about her on the previous panel, and she is lying on the same bed and being seen by the same doctor from page 8 panel 1 of the previous issue. She is depicted pretty much exactly the same way in both issues.
