Gwen Stacy 1

Who’s in it (courtesy of Leoparis):

Gwen Stacy
Harry Osborn
The Enforcers: Fancy Dan, Montana, The Ox
Jean DeWolff
Yuri Watanabe
Captain George Stacy
Darius LeClerc
Peter Parker
Nick Pappas
Harry Osborn
Green Goblin (Norman Osborn)
Crime Master

What happens:

Gwen Stacy prepares to run for student council president at Standard High, then heads home to do her homework, unaware she’s being watched by the Enforcers, Ox, Fancy Dan and Montana, who are planning to snatch her. At home, Gwen turns on the tv, where the news reports that Reed Richards of the FF will return to his old alma mater to deliver a lecture.

Gwen takes dinner to her father at his precinct house, where Lt Jean DeWolff and Lt Yuri Watanabe tell her that Captain Stacy’s elbow-deep in the Lucky Lobo case, which was broken by Foswell’s story in the Bugle. Her dad tells Gwen there are three capos who could regroup Lobo’s forces, Nick the Greek, Angelo Calabrese, and James Wong.

Captain Stacy makes contact with Nick the Greek, his best choice for turning state’s evidence, and takes DeWolff and Watanabe for backup, not trusting anyone else.

Gwen is picked up her boyfriend, and they head to the library, where they pass Peter Parker, who’s reading a book on advanced adhesives. Captain Stacey arrives at Pappas Imports, where Nick Pappas has the ledgers out on his desk. Shots ring out, and DeWolff and Watanabe rush inside to find George Stacy’s been shot in the leg, and Pappas is dead, but Stacy says he doesn’t remember shooting.

An officer finds Gwen at the library, and takes her to see her father in the hospital, where she sees a news report on a memorial in Queens for Ben Parker, whose killer was found guilty today.

Days later, DeWolff tells Stacy the forensics show that he shot first, and Pappas only got off a shot after he’d been wounded, but Stacy insists there was someone else there. Stacy tells her he’s been set up, and DeWolff says she’ll back him up, but the brass say that if he resigns, this all goes away, and as his union rep, she advises him to retire. Stacy, Gwen and DeWolff all agree to fight, and Stacy tells them he’s heard good things about a new law firm, Nelson & Murdock.

The Enforcers threaten Capt. Stacy & Gwen before her boyfriend, Darius LeClerc, and Harry Osborn, arrive. Green Goblin tells Crime-Master that it all worked out perfectly, and that Lucky Lobo’s gang is crushed, Stacy’s disgraced, and his allies in the department are tainted. Crime-Master suggests it’s time to make their move, and Goblin agrees.

Gwen Stacy 2

Who’s in it (courtesy of Leoparis):

Gwen Stacy (also in flashback to when she became friends with Harry)
Harry Osborn (also in flashback to when he became friends with Gwen)
Darius LeClerc
Norman Osborn
The Ox (in flashback only to last issue)
Jean DeWolff
Yuri Watanabe
Lucky Lobo
Captain George Stacy
Frederick Foswell
Betty Brant
Crime Master

What happens:

Having obtained copies of the forensics report, Gwen looks it over with Darius and Harry, using state of the art Oscorp tech, when Norman walks in on them. Harry introduces Gwen and Darius to Norman, who says he knows Darius’ father from his club. after Norman heads off, Gwen uses the computer modelling program to introduce a third party into the scenario, and realizing he would have to be as big as the Ox she saw at the hospital, she decides to find out who he’s working for.

DeWolff and Watanabe interrogate Lobo at Ryker’s Island, who points them to the Green Goblin. Gwen joins DeWolff and Watanabe at George’s bedside, where Gwen tells him the Ox has previously worked for the Goblin. Her father tells them to stop, as he’s decided to take his retirement. Gwen determines to find out the identity of the Green Goblin.

A few days later at Standard High, Darius and Harry lobby for Gwen as class president, while Gwen visits Norman, confronting him with the idea that the Goblin glider is strikingly similar to Oscorp’s designs, but he points her to Frederick Foswell of the Daily Bugle, telling her that Foswell used to be the criminal known as the Big Man, and that he worked with thugs known as the Enforcers.

DeWolff and Watanabe interview Foswell at the Bugle, who points them to the Crime-Master, and shows them a photo taken by Phil Sheldon to be run on tomorrow’s front page. Meanwhile, Gwen, Darius and Harry talk to Betty Brant about placing an ad, when Harry reminds Gwen of how they became friends on Mother’s Day.

[Flashback:
Gwen Stacy 2 (15:4 - 16)-FB
During what is probably their first year in high school, Harry Osborn and Gwen Stacy develop a friendship on Mother’s Day.]

Harry tells Gwen she needs to get some sleep, and to give DeWolff and Watanabe a chance.

Later, Gwen visits her dad at the hospital, where they watch what appears to be a tv documentary about Marvel Monsters, specifically mentioning Kraa the Unhuman and Fin Fang Foom.

Gwen meets with DeWolff and Watanabe, telling them her dad will be released soon, and asking if they’re getting close. They tell her Crime-Master’s trying to scare guys into joining him, and tell her to go win her election. As Gwen heads home, a strange fog appears, and she’s grabbed by Crime-Master.

Gwen Stacy
Crime-Master (Nick Lewis Sr.)
employees of the Daily Bugle
J. Jonah Jameson
Frederick Foswell
staff and patrons of the Midtown Business Executives Club
Green Goblin (Norman Osborn)
Robert LeClerc
Darius LeClerc
Fancy Dan
Harry Osborn
Erica LeClerc

What happens:

When Crime-Master threatens her father with an accident in hospital, Gwen tells him that Frederick Foswell put DeWolff and Watanabe onto him. He tells Gwen that he didn’t frame her father for the Pappas shooting, and they should try looking at the Green Goblin. Gwen tells him they already did, and got nothing, but that she’s pretty sure the Ox ambushed her dad that night, and it fits as the Enforcers used to work for the Goblin. He tells her that the night Pappas and her father were shot, the Enforcers were doing a job for him in Jersey, and suggesting they find out why the Enforcers intimidated her dad, then he vanishes in smoke.

Gwen heads to the Bugle, asking to see Foswell. As Jonah heads off to his Club, Gwen tells Foswell she’s just got him into a lot of trouble, and gives him what little description she can of Crime-Master.

At the Midtown Business Executives Club, Robert LeClerc introduces his son Darius to Norman Osborn, but finds they already know each other, when Gwen calls downstairs for Darius.

Nick Lewis calls for Norman, and they speak in an alley. Lewis accuses Norman of being behind Stacy’s shooting, but he says he assumed it was Lewis. Nick says he still thinks it was Norman, as the Enforcers were involved, and he has a history of messing with him, citing when he tried to make him think he was Jonah Jameson (ref. UTSM 25). Norman asks Nick how he figured out his true identity, but he refuses to tell him, and that he has a notarized document in a safe-deposit box as insurance. Norman points out that the Stacy incident hasn’t helped either of them and suggests they make some enquiries together, and they suit up.

Gwen gets Darius to drive her to a pool hall in Hell’s Kitchen where Fancy Dan hangs out, in order to see where he goes, but Darius confronts him, taking a beating. As Dan heads into an alley, he’s grabbed by the Green Goblin and Crime-Master, who demand to know who hired him to threaten Stacy, but he tells them it was an anonymous call at the pool hall, and he was paid cash at a dead drop. Crime-Master suggests someone new, like the Maggia, Silvio Manfredi, or even Foswell, may be trying for a comeback.

Gwen takes Darius to Harry Osborn to get a cover story for his injuries, before taking him home for his doctor mom to have a look at him. At the LeClerc house, Gwen catches a glimpse of Nick Lewis talking to Robert LeClerc in the study, and she listens in on their conversation, recognizing Lewis as Crime-Master.

What happens:

Gwen tells Foswell she believes that Nick Lewis is Crime-Master. Foswell tells Gwen that her evidence is circumstantial at best, but it’s enough to begin building a case, when Gwen tells him that Robert LeClerc’s mixed up with him. Foswell advises Gwen to approach LeClerc in a public place, and suggest he co-operate with DeWolff and Watanabe.

Norman Osborn receives a call at his home office, prompting him to access his Green Goblin suit.

At Standard High, the football team plays off against Midtown, where Hank McCoy, Bobby Drake, and Jean Grey are in civvies, but on X-Men business to discover if Flash Thompson might be Spider-Man.

Gwen hands LeClerc a note, and as they head out, the Green Goblin attacks, when Marvel Girl comes to their aid, along with Beast and Iceman. Gwen tells LeClerc he can trust DeWolff and Watanabe, but they tell them they have to try to take down the Goblin first. As Gwen tries to get LeClerc away, they’re attacked by Crime-Master, who shoots LeClerc, and warns Gwen that if they meet again, she’s next. Mortally wounded, LeClerc tells Gwen that Nick Lewis is Crime-Master, and asks her to take care of Darius.

The Goblin flies away, and having determined that Flash Thompson isn’t Spider-Man, the X-Men head off before they’re blamed for the disturbance. DeWolff and Watanabe assure Erica LeClerc and Darius that Robert’s on his way to the DA’s office. when they find Gwen cradling his body.

What happens:

Note: This issue interacts with ASM 27.

Giant-Size Gwen Stacy 1/5 (1 - 3)
Not having been invited to LeClerc’s funeral, Gwen and Foswell watch from a distance, when they’re joined by retired Capt. George Stacy, who’s released himself from hospital. Foswell suggests they set a trap for Crime-Master, and make him flip on the Goblin.

Amazing Spider-Man 27 (12:2 - 12:4) ~ Giant-Size Gwen Stacy 1/5 (4:1 - 4:3)
Days after LeClerc’s funeral, Crime-Master watches from a nearby rooftop, while Spider-Man, Foswell and Jonah meet in Jonah’s office.

Giant-Size Gwen Stacy 1/5 (4:4 - 5:1)
Along with uniformed police officers, DeWolff and Watanabe confront Crime-Master, but he turns his guns on them, and they shoot him down.

Amazing Spider-Man 27 (12:5) ~ Giant-Size Gwen Stacy 1/5 (5:2:1 - 5:2:3) Hearing gunfire across the street, Jonah and Spidey wonder what it’s about, when Foswell tells them it’s the end of the Crime-Master.

Amazing Spider-Man 27 (12:6)
Spidey asks Foswell how he’d know that, when Jonah tells him Foswell’s been working on a big crime story for him.

Giant-Size Gwen Stacy 1/5 (5:2:4)
Foswell tells Spidey he’s been acting as bait the past few days.

Amazing Spider-Man 27 (12:7)
Jonah notes that the shooting’s stopped.

Amazing Spider-Man 27 (13:1 - 13:3) ~ Giant-Size Gwen Stacy 1/5 (5:3 - 5:5)
Crime-Master is about to reveal the Green Goblin’s identity, when he dies.

Amazing Spider-Man 27 (13:4 - 16)
A police officer enters Jonah’s office, telling Foswell he was right about the Crime-Master’s identity. Spidey tells Foswell he was wrong about him, though secretly still wonders if he’s the Green Goblin. Jonah tells the cop to arrest Spider-Man, but he tells Jonah there’s no warrant on him, and he helped them round up Crime-Master’s gang.

Remembering he left his camera at the pier, Spidey takes off, but finds it’s gone. Hearing noises outside, Spidey races out, tripping on a rotting plank, and landing in the drink, before finding some kids have his camera. As he swings home, his wet store-bought costume shrinks. As Pete develops his pics, he decides to try selling them to the Daily Globe.

Giant-Size Gwen Stacy 1/5 (6 - 9)
Thirty minutes later, Norman Osborn pulls up at a bank, as news of the Crime-Master’s death is reported over the radio. Taking out a safe-deposit box, he waits until he’s alone, then rips open Crime-Master’s box, but finds it empty.

Gwen talks to Darius, who tells her he doesn’t blame her for his father’s death, but he doesn’t want to see her anymore. Harry brings Gwen the news that she won the election to President of the Student Council, but she just walks away.

Amazing Spider-Man 27 (17:1 - 17:5)
Pete sells his pics to the Daily Globe, but Barney Bushkin, picture editor, asks too many questions about how he obtained the photos.

Giant-Size Gwen Stacy 1/5 (10 - 15)
Officer Jennings reports to Wilson Fisk, explaining that he dosed Lewis with Aconite while he was removing his mask, ensuring he didn’t have a chance to give up the Goblin’s identity. Fisk pays him off, when the Green Goblin smashes thru the window, threatening Fisk, who admits to having taken Crime-Master’s file, but that he’s only trying to help him. Fisk hands Goblin the file, and explains that he will soon control all non-Maggia criminal activity in the city, and that he wants Osborn’s contacts and connections, to which the Goblin agrees.

Watanabe, DeWolff, Capt Stacy and Gwen meet in the park to celebrate their victory, where DeWolff tells him that he would be welcomed back to the force if he wanted it.

Amazing Spider-Man 27 (17:6 - 20)
At his club, Jonah takes all the credit for the capture of the Crime-Master. Seeing Pete’s pics in the Daily Globe, he decides he better start buttering him up. While May is visiting Mrs Watson, Pete starts sewing himself a new costume. May returns home early, and he takes her out to the movies. As the night shift takes over at the Bugle, Foswell removes a bundle from beneath his desk, and returns to his apartment, where he unwraps it, to reveal it’s his disguise as Patch. The Green Goblin decides that Spider-Man must be destroyed.

Giant-Size Gwen Stacy 1/5 (16 - 20)
Gwen follows Fancy Dan to Pacific Spice, then researches the company at the Dept of Public Records, before returning and asking to see Wilson Fisk. When his underlings blow her off, she warns them that she’s Capt Stacy’s daughter. Wilson Fisk appears, and asks her into his office, where she accuses him of framing her father. Fisk tells her she and her father will be safe if he remains retired. He gives Gwen a complimentary sample of his proprietary cinnamon blend, telling her it protects against heart disease, and that they shouldn’t need to see each other again.

Gwen suggests to her father that rather than return to active duty, he should consider working for the police force as a consultant.

Considerations:
Clive_Reston wrote: Wed Aug 10, 2022 7:54 pm Giant-Size Gwen Stacy 1 complicates things a little (but not a lot). It collects Gwen Stacy 1-2 with what would have been issues 3-5. The whole thing takes place over a couple of weeks (during Gwen’s campaign for class president).

At the beginning, there’s a news report that Reed Richards is going to give a talk at his alma mater (i.e. FF 35). Foswell has published his Bugle story about Lucky Lobo, but this needn’t be immediately after that; it sounds like Capt. Stacy has been following up on it to take Lobo’s whole gang down.

We see Nick Lewis talking to Norman Osborn (who can’t figure out how Lewis knows he’s the Goblin); Lewis refers to UTOS 25 in the past tense (as “when you tried to make me think you were Jonah Jameson”). The last chapter is simultaneous with ASM 27, and in fact puts Jean DeWolff and Yuri Watanabe on the scene at Lewis’s death…

We also get the X-Men (between issues 10 & 11 of their series, it looks like). And Robert LeClerc is implied to be That One Guy in JJJ’s club in ASM 26!
