Taschen Marvel Comics Library & FF Panel by Panel

Post by Leoparis »

After seeing some enticing videos on YouTube about these products (notably from Kayfabe) I couldn't resist and bought them.
I received them both today.

The Taschen book is expensive but it's been nominated for the Eisner Awards for a good reason. They used a different paper for the covers (reprinted with the back ad and the back cover) and for the paper to emulate the original printing. They're scanned from the best copies. Reprinting the Spider-Man story in Amazing Fantasy 15, issues 1-20 and Annual 1 along with the original art pages of AF 15. The letters page and promotional ads are there. And the large reproduction means you can experience them as you did in your youth in spite of your failing eyesight.

Panel-by-Panel is by Chip Kidd and redoes the Maximum Fantastic Four bit of expanding panels to fill the page (but with photographs of the original issue in their original coloring and Benday dots) with Chip Kidd's mastery of layout and design. You even get a standard printing of the photographed original issue in the back in case. A page-by-page analysis by Tom Brevoort and articles by Chip Kidd and Mark Evanier. There is even a photostat of the cover and comments about the differences with the published cover. The price has dropped on Amazon (poor sales?) so why resist?
