Human Fly #1-19

Post by Col_Fury »

And now for something completely different.

HUMAN FLY #1 (September 1977)
By Bill Mantlo & Lee Elias

APPEARANCES:
Human Fly (Rick Rojatt, also in fb), his wife (in fb) & children (in fb), Spider-Man (also in fb-fb), Iron Man (bts in fb), Ted Locke (also in fb), Blaze Kendall (also in fb), Harmony Whyte (also in fb), Arnie Berman (also in fb), Mercenary (also in fb-fb) & his gang (also in fb-fb), reporters (others also in fb-fb), doctors (in fb), bystanders

FLASHBACK:
One hour ago, the Human Fly has a press conference before he performs his big stunt to raise money for charity to help disabled children. It’s interrupted when the press plane is hijacked (fb). The Mercenary and his gang hijack a press plane (fb-fb). The Human Fly decides to rescue the press plane. Reporter Harmony Whyte wonders if he can save the plane and the “thousands of lives” inside (fb). Blaze Kendall is a new co-pilot; when the misogynistic captain dies from a heart attack, she emergency lands the plane. No one dies but she somehow ends up in a body cast for months. Later, she’s recruited by the Human Fly to be her pilot (fb). Ten years ago (1967), engineer Ted Locke loses his hands in a bridge explosion in Vietnam. Two years ago (1975) Tony Stark wants to hire Ted Locke but he’s not interested. Later, he’s recruited by the Human Fly to be his engineer (fb). The Human Fly is in a car accident in North Carolina; his wife and children are killed and he’s told he’ll be crippled for life. Over the following years he forces himself to heal and he becomes the Human Fly to inspire other people who have been injured or crippled (fb).
SYNOPSIS:
In Houston Texas, the Human Fly prepares to board an airplane while hanging from a helicopter. He gets his magnet gloves on the plane but they fly into a storm. The Human Fly steadies himself, but the Mercenary hears him and blows a hole in the roof of the plane, knocking the Human Fly loose. He uses his mini jets in his boots and gloves to get back to the plane. The Human Fly boards the 747 after he blows the door off. Inside, the Human Fly is joined by Spider-Man when the attacks the hijackers. The Mercenary prepares to escape with his jet pack but the Human Fly knocks him out. Spider-Man saves the Human Fly with a web-parachute and returns to the plane so no one misses Peter Parker. Everyone says the Human Fly is great, but Harmony Whyte wants to expose him as a fraud.

NOTE:
Almost 60% of the Human Fly’s bone structure has been replaced with steel.

Peter Parker attended the press conference to see if the Human Fly was the same one he fought in ASM@ 10; he’s not.

Based on a real person, the Human Fly’s real name was revealed in White Tiger’s handbook entry (it’s the same name as the Canadian he was based on).

Um, no explosive decompression when a hole was blown in the roof of the 747? Or when the Human Fly blew the door off? And how did Spider-Man plan to get back on the plane mid-flight? And where is he swinging away from; they landed in a ballpark? And why does Harmony Whyte think “thousands of lives” will be lost if the press plane crashes? wut

HUMAN FLY #2 (October 1977)
By Bill Mantlo & Carmine Infantino

APPEARANCES:
Human Fly (also in fb), Ghost Rider, Ted Locke, Blaze Kendall, Harmony Whyte (also in fb), Arnie Berman, Cyrus T. Barker (also bts in fb), Alex Marks (also in fb), Jack (Whyte’s cameraman), bystanders

FLASHBACK:
Recap of last issue. Harmony Whyte looks into the Human Fly’s backstory and hopes to expose him as a fraud (after last issue). Racecar driver Alex Marks is in a car crash and breaks every bone in his body (fb). The Human Fly uses his baton and some non-flammable gel to escape the flaming tub (during main story).
SYNOPSIS:
In Nevada, the Human Fly straddles two racecars as they vault over a giant tub of flame. He lands in the fire and escapes. Johnny Blaze is impressed. Harmony Whyte accuses racecar driver Alex Marks of being the Human Fly but he says the Fly inspired him to recover, but he still shakes all the time. She doesn’t believe him. The next day a race begins, but the route is littered with death-traps. Only the Human Fly (posing as Alex Marks) makes it through; Johnny Blaze falls to one of the traps but transforms into Ghost Rider, who swears vengeance on those who tried to kill him. Several racers are killed. Whyte investigates the race’s promoter Cyrus T. Barker while Ghost Rider saves the Fly. The pair encounter another death-trap and the Fly saves Ghost Rider. Barker, apparently an Australian, is furious. He prepares to flee but Alex Marks knocks him out. Whyte is convinced that Marks isn’t the Fly, but has four more suspects on her list. Blaze and Marks agree to donate their profits to charity.

NOTE:
Harmony Whyte wants to be the next Woodward and Bernstein. Um, a stuntman isn’t the same thing as a criminal PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES, lady.

At the bottom of the giant tub of flame is water (the flaming gasoline floats on top), and when the Human Fly blows a hole in the side of the tub to escape, the fire and water just stay in the tub. Um, gravity? wut

HUMAN FLY #3 (November 1977)
By Bill Mantlo & Lee Elias

APPEARANCES:
Human Fly (also in fb), Ted Locke (also in fb), Blaze Kendall (also in fb), Harmony Whyte (in fb), Arnie Berman (in fb), Marion Martinet (also bts in fb-fb) & his thugs (also in fb-fb), David Dreir (in fb & fb-fb), Alexandra Dreir (also in fb-fb), reporters (in fb), bystanders (in fb-fb), sharks (in fb)

FLASHBACK:
The Human Fly escapes from a shark tank to raise money for charity. He’s approached by David Dreir, the richest guy in the state, to rescue his daughter (fb). David Dreir runs for governor but his campaign is attacked by thugs hired by his rival Marion Martinet. When he doesn’t drop out of the race they kidnap his daughter Alexandra and bring her to a castle in the Rockies (fb-fb). Harmony Whyte continues to be a terrible human being and the Human Fly agrees to help because Alexandra has polio (fb).
SYNOPSIS:
The Human Fly climbs a mountain to get to a castle on top, but is attacked by a giant robot bird. He defeats the thing and continues on. When a jet knocks him off a cliff he calls his friends for help. He makes his way into the castle and finds Alexandra drugged, but is attacked by Marion Martinet and his thugs. Martinet says Alexandra is his daughter.

NOTE:
Next issue reveals the “running for governor” stuff in the fb-fb is a lie, but the attack and kidnapping still happened.

HUMAN FLY #4 (December 1977)
By Bill Mantlo & Lee Elias

APPEARANCES:
Human Fly, Ted Locke, Blaze Kendall, Harmony Whyte, Arnie Berman, Marion Martinet & his thugs, Alexandra Dreir, David Dreir & his men

David Dreir takes Whyte and Berman hostage to ensure the Human Fly completes the job, and he reveals he and Martinet are weapons manufacturers, not politicians. Dreir continues to say Alexandra is his daughter. The Human Fly wakes up and is attacked by panthers. He evades them and watches as Martinet’s and Dreir’s forces attack each other. The Human Fly gets Alexandra out of the fight and she explains that Dreir is her father and Martinet is her step-father. Everyone stops fighting when Alexandra is in danger. The Human Fly scolds Dreir and Martinet and takes the girl to a hospital.

Also, he’s wearing a leopard print leotard (recently). Malik was a famous tightrope walker, but an accident broke every bone in his body. He wakes up in the hospital wondering what the newspaper says about him, and is angry that the Japanese bombing Pearl Harbor was a more important news story than his injuries (years ago).
SYNOPSIS:
In Quebec, a skyscraper is on fire with children trapped on the roof. The Human Fly starts to climb up the side of the burning skyscraper. He makes it to the top and knocks Malik out. He and Harmony start to get the kids to the other skyscraper. Malik wakes up and helps get the rest across. Malik is arrested and apologizes for what he did.
