CONAN #5 (December 1995)
By Larry Hama & Doug Wheatley

They travel to the top of the world where Hanar is immediately impaled on a giant iron spear. Conan sneaks into the fortress and sees that all of the Mountain King’s Yetis are long dead. Conan kills the Mountain King and frees Princess Ilse. She reveals she left with the Mountain King to get away from Hanar, then chops off Hanar’s legs. Conan leaves with her but she gets stuck in a glacier. Conan wanders off.

This story is Conan’s next appearance after COV.RUNE, and CO 4 led into it.

CONAN #6 (January 1996)
By Larry Hama & Doug Wheatley

APPEARANCES:
Conan, Sel (high priestess of Ishtar), Arb, a necromancer (corpse, also in fb), Smeag (also in fb), acolytes, priestesses, eunuchs, a basilisk, living dead

SYNOPSIS:
Riding into warmer climes from his arctic adventure, Conan runs into a horde of living dead. Sel, a high priestess of Ishtar, explains to Conan that the only way to defeat them is to incinerate them. She tells Conan their story, he agrees to help against the necromancer and they fool around. When they’re ready they fight through the zombies and kill a basilisk as they gain entry to the necromancer’s tower. They find the necromancer has been killed by the apprentice and Conan kills the apprentice.

NOTE:
Conan mentions that he’s been to Stygia before. Also, he’s in a mercenary phase.

CONAN #7 (February 1996)
By Larry Hama & Bret Blevins

APPEARANCES:
Conan, Man of Iron (Rowena) & her shield-maidens (inc Isolde), Man of Iron (Ragallo), a duke (corpse) & his soldiers (corpses), brigands

SYNOPSIS:
Conan has sold his sword to a Duke but the battle went poorly and he’s the only one left alive. The Man of Iron who killed them all tells Conan to flee, but Conan decapitates him. The Man of Iron puts his head back on his shoulders and knocks Conan out. He calls for his shield-maidens and tells them to tend to Conan’s wounds. Conan wakes up surrounded by beautiful women. Ragallo and Rowena, masters of the castle, tell Conan he’s not a prisoner and the beauties are his to do with as he pleases. The next day the castle is attacked by brigands. The Man of Iron kills them all and Conan is surprised that Rowena is inside. Suddenly, Ragallo kills his sister, gets in the armor and kills the shield-maidens, wanting the power for himself. Conan kills him by tossing the bastard into the castle’s moat.

NOTE:
The Man of Iron armor was a mechanism to be operated from the inside, which is why cutting the head off did nothing. Also, “Man of Iron” is spelled out in the Iron Man cover font of the time. Also, BRET BLEVINS!

CONAN #8 (March 1996)
By Dan Abnett & Joe Bennett

APPEARANCES:
Conan (also in fb), Zingaran army (inc Korren (in fb), Breygen (in fb), Gorthas (in fb), Lugh (in fb), Bryugga (in fb), Madoc (also in fb), Sudra (also in fb)), Picts (in fb)

FLASHBACK:
Conan has sold his sword to the Zingaran army to gather timber from the Pictlands. The party is ambushed by Picts, so Conan tells the survivors to jump in the Black River so its current will take them away from the attackers. They regroup and realize only 13 survived out of 300. Conan suggests they attack Pictish villages in revenge. They decide to chop down the Picts’ God-Tree.
SYNOPSIS:
Conan is swept away in the Black River. He’s pulled out by Madoc and Sudra, but they hear a thunder in the distance.

NOTE:
This is the first time in a Marvel comic where I’ve seen Conan say “the lamentations of their women.” It might have happened in a Dark Horse comic, and while I’ve read them all I don’t recall if he did or not.

CONAN #9 (April 1996)
By Dan Abnett & Joe Bennett

APPEARANCES:
Conan, Zingaran army (inc Korren, Breygen, Lugh, Bryugga, Madoc, Sudra), Picts

CONAN #10 (May 1996)
By Larry Hama & Enrique Alcatena

APPEARANCES:
Conan, Pildar, Queen Bryn & her Amazons (inc Mab, Danae, Alana, Nym), gladiators (inc Har, Urg), Vanguard of the Legion Freebooters (inc Otho)

SYNOPSIS:
Conan rides away from the City of Plague (CO 6) and is captured by Queen Bryn and her Amazons. He wakes up and is forced into gladiator combat, which he obviously wins. That night Conan is rewarded with sexy fun times with Queen Bryn. In the morning she shows him a secret passage that leads out of the city. As Conan leaves the other Amazons attack Bryn for breaking their laws by not killing Conan. Conan runs into the Vanguard of the Legion Freebooters who are planning to attack and pillage the Amazons.

NOTE:
Conan says the priestess worshipped Mitra, but CO 6 says she worshipped Ishtar.

CONAN #11 (June 1996)
By Larry Hama & Enrique Alcatena

APPEARANCES:
Conan, Queen Bryn & her Amazons (inc Danae, Mab), Vanguard of the Legion of Freebooters (inc Malekhar)

SYNOPSIS:
Conan warns the Amazons of the incoming Legion of Freebooters, but they don’t believe him, and so are ambushed. Conan joins the Amazons in fighting them off, and they warn the rest of the Amazons. Bryn’s execution is stopped and the attackers are defeated. Conan is warned that their law still needs to be followed. As he rides away she’s shot in the back with an arrow; when he’s out of sight he removes the shield on his back and continues on his way.

NOTE:
With the exception of the Dan Abnett two-parter fill-in issues, the narrative was consistent that one story followed another (the current story referred back to the previous one like it was Conan’s last adventure), with the exception of CO 7 (CO 10 referred to CO 6), which is odd, because it was by the same writer. And on top of that, it was a botched reference (wrong god). I’m going to assume that the reference in CO 10 referred to an unseen adventure, of which its summary sounds an awful lot like CO 6’s adventure, just with a Mitra priestess instead of an Ishtar priestess. Also, that CO 8-9 happens in publication order.

So, Conan starts in Zamora (CO 1-4), fights Rune (COV.RUNE), is magically dropped off in a snowy northern land (CO 5), heads south (CO 6), has an adventure in an unspecified location (CO 7), is in Zingara/the Pictlands (CO 8-9), and is then in another unspecified location (CO 10-11). I’m going to say that Conan was magically dropped off in Cimmeria, traveled south through Aquilonia, ended up in Zingara/the Pictlands, then travelled East, possibly ending up in Ophir or Corinthia, near Zamora, where he started.

Currently, COV.RUNE is placed between SAVSCO 62 & M/GN:COR, but that’s plainly wrong. To be fair, it was an arbitrary placement from back when Conan only had like, six appearances in his chronology at the MCP.

Also, I’m aware of SirMuddy’s chronology, and that he’s broken this series up. He doesn’t (as far as I can see) have COV.RUNE anywhere. From what I’m seeing, his order is CO 1-4 (Zamora), CO 7 (unknown), COSAV 2 (Aquilonia), COSAV 5-6 (unknown, but Shem?), COSAV 7 (Hyperborea), CO 4/2 (Zamora), COB2 1-3 (Bossonian Marches), COSAV 5/2-6/2 (near Turan), COSAV 8-9 (north of Turan), CO 5-6 (south of a snowy land), CO 10-11 (unknown), and then a while later, shortly before his rise to king of Aquilonia, SAVSCO 46, SAVSCO 201, CO 8-9, COSAV 7/2, SAVSCO 47-48. In CO 8-9, Conan’s explicitly working with the Zingarans, NOT the Aquilonians, so that’s out. Also, CO 4/2 very obviously follows CO 4, so why did he split them up? And how does Conan go from Zamora to Aquilonia to Hyperborea to the Bossonian Marches to Turan? I can’t buy that for a dollar (ROBOCOP!).

Anyway, Conan’s in Zamora in SAVSCO 181, during a mercenary phase. By SAVSCO 128 he’s roughly back in the Zamora region, but in a roaming kind of way after he’s hooked up with his Cimmerian friend Tem. In between we’ve placed some random ‘90s appearances in SJNS-FB, SAVSCO 222/2 (in or near Nemedia) & TCORPS 3. The Thor Index places TCORPS 3 as Conan’s last appearance before SAVSCO 128. I’m liking this spot for this series.
