Fhala arrives and stops them; he clearly didn’t do it. She asks Conan for help finding her father and they fool around. They visit a nearby king to see if he knows anything; most of his people have either vanished or fled, and something is magically stealing his riches. When he learns who Fhala’s father is he orders his men to attack; Conan and Fhala escape. Later they find a tower in a lake surrounded by carnivorous ants and ant-controlled zombies feeding sacks of sugar to a monstrous, mutated caterpillar-like woman who is constantly laying eggs. They find Fhala’s father being tortured by an ant-headed man, who tells Conan his story. Also, the ants have been stealing the king’s treasure through hidden tunnels. The three escape when Conan floods the underground cavern with the lake, drowning everyone else. The water pressure causes the tower to crumble, revealing a giant golden statue of Meara. The ground rumbles and Thok arrives, a monstrous ant-creature. The water pressure causes the statue to fall, crushing Thok. Everything sinks into the lake.

NOTE:
Meara wanted sons to carry her name, suggesting Laroughe is her surname. Fhala’s father is called Laroughe by King Vhalken, so I suppose he could have taken her name.

SAVAGE SWORD OF CONAN #71 (December 1981)
By Michael Fleisher & Ernie Chan

APPEARANCES:
Conan & his mercenaries (inc Jered), Ezar Bar Q’um residents (inc Prince Nyad (becomes KIng), Princess Alissa, King Alexian (corpse), Cmdr. Falmarq, Counselor Carnek, Derlok, Cyreeta, Leah), Barolo Hillmen, Khumar Rhun residents (inc King Razak, Capt. V’harzan, Torg, Yorn, Bernek, Storbath), a massive tentacled beast

SYNOPSIS:
In Corinthia, two city-states, Ezar Bar Q’um and Khumar Rhun, are fighting for power. In Ezar Bar Q’um, Conan (working as a mercenary for the city) attends the funeral of King Alexian, who was recently poisoned. That night, Prince Nyad is kidnapped. Cmdr. Falmarq decides to send Conan and his mercenaries to retrieve the prince, instead of sending his army and leaving the city open for attack. Conan and co. set out and are ambushed by Barolo Hillmen. Conan learns the hillmen captured the prince and gave him to King Razak so he could ransom the boy, instead of killing him like they were hired to. Conan agrees he and his men will pose as captured slaves so they can get in Razak’s castle in Khumar Rhun, where the king is building a labyrinth. They’re discovered and captured for real, and Conan is recognized. Princess Alissa refuses to pay the prince’s ransom. Conan eventually escapes and frees the prince, but he ends up confronting a massive tentacles beast. Conan kills the beast and eventually returns with the injured prince, but he says he’s dead. Princess Alissa reveals she arranged everything so she could be queen, and Prince Nyad orders she be arrested for treason.

SAVAGE SWORD OF CONAN #72 (January 1982)
By Bruce Jones & John Buscema

APPEARANCES:
Conan, Turanian farmers (inc Hagas Shornn, Larna) & their sheep (inc Tessie, Buff), other Turanians (inc Lieka), Carcainia residents, Founton (“city of hope”) residents (inc Dhan, Sarla, Charn (Gray Priest, also in fb), Shem residents, Rhoulan residents (inc Bayla (Gray Priest, also in fb) & his demons (also in fb), Gina (see NOTE)), Charn & Rayla’s father (in fb)), Stygian berserkers (in fb), Vekechai (great tuortoise god, “thunder beast,” “sand creature,” “drought beast,” actually a robot, also in fb)

FLASHBACK:
As children, Bayla and Charn traveled to Stygia where their father was quickly killed. They survived on their own for years before finding a hamlet in the desert. They became leaders and turned it into a fancy place. Bayla was bored and learned magic and eventually kicked her brother out, so Charn calls on Vekechai to punish him, and the city is destroyed.
SYNOPSIS:
In Turan, a farming family is suddenly killed by an unseen force. 100 miles east on the shore of the Viyalet Sea, Conan gets a horse and continues toward Zamora. As he travels he notices the destroyed countryside, and when he arrives in Carcainia the townspeople attack him and want to gut his horse. He escapes and continues, finding a girl in a crushed farm. She tells Conan about the “thunder beast” that destroyed everything and stole all the moisture. They comes across other Turanians who are trying to reach the “city of hope” where there’s still water and vegetation. In the “city of hope,” Sarla is tired of the Gray Priest’s rules and is banished outside the walls for her curiosity. Caught in a drought storm, Conan’s horse dies. To save his friend, Dhan jumps over the wall before Sarla can be sent out. Dhan runs into Conan and they eventually find Rhoulan, a walled city, where they’re attacked by demons and captured. Gina frees them and Conan questions Bayla, another gray priest. He tells Conan his story before falling over dead. Conan frees the slaves of Rhoulan, tells them the city is theirs and they should treat strangers with kindness and respect; they’ll be rewarded for it. Conan and Dhan continue on and find Sarla in the wasteland before seeing Vekechai coming their way. Conan tricks the tortoise god into falling into a ravine; its body crashing to the bottom causes earthquakes which destroys Founton. Conan crawls inside Vekechai and realizes it’s a machine, and that it was powering itself by sucking up moisture, its exhaust was causing the storms and its pollution preventing rain clouds from forming.

NOTE:
Followed by “Preview: Conan the Movie,” a third installment of their behind-the-scenes look at the Conan movie. By Roger Stern!

I’m not seeing this one in Roy’s chronology, but the intro page says it happens pretty much right after “The Dragon from the Inland Sea,” which was in COB 39.

Conan recognizes Gina and says she’s an angel of Mitra. Is this a pre-existing character?

SAVAGE SWORD OF CONAN #73 (February 1982)
By Michael Fleisher & John Buscema

APPEARANCES:
Conan & his crew, Zingarans (inc King of Zingara, Satrap Phor Thok), thieves (inc Zarag, Renardo), a changeling (also as Warz Bel Doqh, also in fb) & his various victims (in fb), Warz Bel Doqh (Stygian nobleman, corpse), fishermen (inc Prquat), Stygians (inc Purani, Gaulag), Kushite cannibals, a crocodile (“cocodrill”), giant swamp-serpent, giant spider, ghouls

FLASHBACK:
An alien changeling travels to Earth and impersonates various people, killing those he impersonates.
SYNOPSIS:
Conan and his crew fight the attacking Zingaran navy. Conan is knocked overboard and by the time he resurfaces his crew has been captured. He swims to Shem’s shore and finds a rowboat. Meanwhile, Conan’s captured crew is ordered to execution by the King of Zinara and Satrap Phor Thok. Conan wrestles with and kills a crocodile. Elsewhere, some thieves steal a fancy necklace off of a guy who looks just like a corpse he’s next to. Conan happens by and agrees to help him find the thieves. They stop at a tavern to rest and are spotted by the Zingaran army, who are looking for Conan. Conan and his employer escape and Conan takes a tavern wench with him so the Zingarans don’t interrogate her. They follow the thieves into Kush while the Zingarans follow where they’re attacked by ghouls and Kushite cannibals. They escape and find the thieves have been killed by a giant spider. Conan kills it and the twin reveals himself as an alien and tells Conan his story. He impersonates Conan and leaves, only to be captured by the Zingarans. They behead the impersonator, thinking their job done.

2nd Story:
By Roy Thomas & John Buscema

APPEARANCES:
Valeria (in fb) & the Red Brotherhood (inc Capt. Gowar (in fb), Agir (in fb), Katur (in fb), Tobak (in fb), Naguth (in fb), Mazumbe (in fb)), Metallus (also in fb), Capt. Rogarth (mentioned)

FLASHBACK:
Metallus, recently shipwrecked on the island, sees an approaching ship and hides while he watches a rowboat take pirates to shore, but an argument between the pirates leads to violence and they race into the forest. Soon after, Metallus meets Valeria of the Red Brotherhood, whose reputation precedes her. They team up against the other pirates. After killing some, they go to the hidden cave Metallus has been staying in. She tells him about the Treasure of Mogar, the reason the pirates are here. More pirates arrive looking for Valeria.
SYNOPSIS:
Metallus of Argos writes down his recent adventures.

NOTE:
Not credited in any of these issues, but this is adapted from “Isle of Pirates’ Doom” by REH, starring a female pirate that wasn’t originally Valeria (Helen Tavrel), set in the 17th or 18th century.

Valeria is well-known as a member of the Red Brotherhood, and is still young. Also, she’s wearing the same clothes she did in Red Nails. Most likely shortly after Red Nails and her time with Conan (whom she pines for in later issues), and before their reunion in SAVSCO 127.

SAVAGE SWORD OF CONAN #74 (March 1982)
By Chris Claremont & Val Mayerik

APPEARANCES:
Conan (also in fb), Prince Kendrick (one-armed prince, also in fb), Inn employees (inc Jarissa), Astriel (“Bright Lady,” “Silver Goddess,” “Snow Queen,” “Silver Lady,” also in fb), brigands (inc Shard (also in fb), Gorch, Belar), twin Stygian sorcerers, Toth-Amon (also in fb), Inn of the Bright Lady guards (inc Firetongue), demons

FLASHBACK:
In Cimmeria in his youth, Conan and his friend Shard hunt boar. When Conan saves Shard, he knocks Conan out and leaves Cimmeria (4:2 - 4:7). Thoth-Amon abducts Astriel, a goddess, in a grab for power, but she escapes when Prince Kendrick helps her (20:3 - 21:1).
SYNOPSIS:
Conan, with a bunch of furs, gets a room for the night to rest. Kendrick of Aloe, who is missing an arm, asks Conan for his help. Conan agrees to transport Astriel to her home for a bunch of gold and they quickly leave. Assassins arrive looking for Astriel. Conan continues even after he realizes they’re being chased. Suddenly their horses disintegrate and Thoth-Amon magically contacts them. Astriel tells Conan her story. The brigands catch up to them and Conan recognizes Shard as one of them. After some shenanigans, Astriel is returned home. Conan decides to stay with her until spring, and they plan to fool around the entire time.

NOTE:
Among other things, Shard was jealous because Conan was a better lover than he was. So, this has to be after COB 8-FB, where Conan is 15 and loses his virginity, and before he leaves Cimmeria at age 16 in SAVT 4 (4:5 - 4:7)-FB.

2nd Story:
By Roy Thomas & Gene Day

APPEARANCES:
Mr. Costigan, carriage driver, cultists, toadlike thing, Von Junzt (German eccentric, mentioned), Justin Geoffrey (poet, mentioned)

SYNOPSIS:
After reading a book by Von Junzt, Mr. Costigan arrives in Hungary in search of the Black Stone. He’s warned that anyone who looks at the Black Stone is driven insane. He finds the monolith with strange writing on it in the woods, but quickly falls sleep. He wakes up surrounded by dancing cultists, but can’t seem to move. He watched as a dancing woman is whipped and an infant is smashed against the Black Stone. Smoke rises from its top and a giant toadlike thing appears; a woman is sacrificed to it. Costigan passes out and later wakes up thinking it was all a dream, until he spots one of the cultists’ pendant on the ground. He runs off screaming.

NOTE:
Adapted from “The Black Stone” by REH.

Followed by another behind-the-scenes look at the upcoming Conan movie, by Steven Grant.

FLASHBACK:
Valeria is hungry, so they travel to the row boat for rations and are attacked by the pirates.
SYNOPSIS:
Metallus continues to write down his recent adventures.

NOTE:
Valeria mentions she traveled with Conan some time ago.

Yet another letter from that guy from the city I live in.

SAVAGE SWORD OF CONAN #75 (April 1982)
By Michael Fleisher & Alfredo Alcala

APPEARANCES:
Conan (also in fb) & his crew (in fb), Zingarans (also in fb, inc Serno), Capt. Bor’aqh Sharaq & his crew (inc Nahrela, Dorak, Galen), Marina, Berend (elderly farmers), Watros (weaponsmith), Mitraic priests, island natives, sharks, Twelve-Eyed Thing, a sea monster

FLASHBACK:
Two weeks ago, Zingarans attack Conan’s ship; his crew is killed and he’s taken captive.
SYNOPSIS:
Conan is being held captive in Torture Rock by the Zingaran army. Conan escapes and four days later is found in the sea by Capt. Bor’aqh Sharaq and his crew. Conan tells his story but they don’t believe him and torture him, thinking he’s a spy. Conan challenges the captain to a leadership fight, chops off his hand and throws him overboard. Conan is the new captain (and gains Sharaq’s woman Nahrela), but Sharaq washes ashore an island four days later. A week later Sharaq has his strength back and swears vengeance. Later, he’s found by the Zingarans and arrested. Meanwhile, a sea storm destroys Conan’s ship and some of the crew survive on lifeboats. Sharaq escapes after being tortured. Conan nears land but they’re attacked by a sea monster. Conan injures the beast and it retreats. On shore the remainder of the crew deserts. Sharaq gets a fancy helmet and a multi-weapon gizmo to replace his hand. Conan buys a boat and sails to the temple of the Twelve-Eyed Thing with Nahrela. They enter and find a statue of the Twelve-Eyed Thing, but are discovered by a Mitraic priest. Before the priest can sound the alarm he’s killed by Sharaq, who then kills Nahrela. Conan fights him but is attacked by the Twelve-Eyed Thing. Wantig to kill Conan himself Sharaq attacks the beast, but is killed. Conan defeats the monster, evades the arriving priests and takes two goblets as souvenirs as he leaves.

SAVAGE SWORD OF CONAN #76 (May 1982)
By Michael Fleisher & John Buscema

Conan & his Zuagirs (inc Jamal, Ahmrek, Raylenna, Khalid, Varnek), King of Q’alid Del B’har (also in fb), his previous wife (in fb) & his son (also in fb), King’s son’s impersonator, Queen Fanetta (also in fb), Q’alid Del B’har army (inc Capt. Skarh-Ben, Zorchakk), Devil-Bat riders (inc Pharlopa D’zenn) & their ancestors (in fb), savage beast-men (in fb), a caravan, a monster

FLASHBACK:
20 years ago, the king’s wife died in childbirth and his son was deformed; he sent the infant to be raised by peasants instead of killing him. Years later he took a new wife, but she’s faithless and barren and plots against the king. Long ago, blind people immigrated to some caves in the desert to get away from the savage beast-men who terrorized them. They found large Devil-Bats in the caves and trained them.
SYNOPSIS:
Conan and his Zuagirs raid a caravan. After kicking some mutineers out of the group Conan meets Raylenna, who leaves the caravan to stay with Conan. That night, the king of Q’alid Del B’har arrives, disguised as a beggar, and asks for Conan’s help after telling his story. The king returns home and is killed. Conan arrives at the village and stops Q’alid Del B’har soldiers from killing the prince. Conan stops one of his Zuagirs from poisoning the boy before they’re all abducted by the Devil-Bat riders. Conan meets Pharlopa D’zenn, leader of the blind Devil-Bat riders and she tells Conan her story. She wants to feed them to her Devil-Bats. Conan helps everyone escape, and when Pharlopa D’zenn tries to stop them she accidentally causes an avalanche and is trapped. Raylenna is revealed as a spy for the queen and she’s killed when Q’alid Del B’harr soldiers attack. The prince is killed, but Conan notices his birthmark is gone, and only an impostor was killed. Conan confronts Queen Fanetta with the truth; the king’s dwarf servant is actually his son. She opens a trap door and Conan and the dwarf fall into a pit with a monster inside. Conan kills it and then a soldier before Fanetta realizes she’s lost. The dwarf decides to keep Fanetta as a chambermaid instead of killing her.

2nd Story:
By Roy Thomas & Ernie Chan

I covered this still-unfinished Wolves Beyond the Boarder adaptation over here. I didn’t realize it at the time, but apparently REH’s original story is also unfinished, so there’s a nice harmony to the adaptation also being unfinished. :)

3rd Story:
By Roy Thomas & John Buscema

APPEARANCES:
Valeria (in fb) & the Red Brotherhood (inc Muzambe (in fb)), Metallus (vo, also in fb)

FLASHBACK:
Valeria and Metallus fight the pirates. Of the seven that came ashore only three remain alive.
SYNOPSIS:
Metallus continues to write down his recent adventures.

NOTE:
Wouldn’t you know it? Another letter from that guy.

SAVAGE SWORD OF CONAN #77 (June 1982)
By John Buscema & Michael Fleisher

APPEARANCES:
Conan, Pharak, Shadizar guardsmen (inc Mernot, Huzzar) & residents, Zamorian marauders (inc Lord Darkon (also in fb), Torguh), townies (inc Lorn, others in fb), a giant spider, dragons, leopards

FLASHBACK:
The ancient city used to be a paradise, but boredom led to violence and the society fell. One day, Darkon and his Zamorian marauders found a nest of dragon eggs; he raised them to obey his commands, and he uses them to rule the ancient city.
APPEARANCES:
In Shadrizar, Conan meets Pharak and gets arrested. They escape the city but are pursued by the guards. They try to hide in some mountains but fall into a cavern. Conan kills a giant spider and they make it into a forest where they find an ancient, ruined city. Conan saves two women from a dragon by killing it, but the townies seem worried. Conan meets Lord Darkon, ruler of the city, who is surprised and confused that Conan killed the dragon. Darkon tells Conan his story and tosses Conan in his dungeon. Conan escapes but fails to inspire a revolt among the townies. Darkon releases leopards after Conan; he kills them but Pharak dies. Conan kills Darkon and his men and leaves the ruined city to its own devices.

NOTE:
Conan is 17 years old here.

2nd Story:
By Roy Thomas & John Buscema

APPEARANCES:
Valeria (in fb), Metallus (vo, also in fb), Capt. Rogarth (mentioned)

FLASHBACK:
It’s getting late, so Valeria decides to take a nap while Metallus keeps watch.
SYNOPSIS:
Metallus continues to write down his recent adventures.

NOTE:
Valeria says that “Capt. Rogarth” saved her from a sinking ship when she was a child and raised her as a daughter. However, in Valeria’s origin story seen in RS2 1-2, that would be Brandus / “Capt. Kirkos.” As far as I can tell we never see “Capt. Rogarth” on-panel anywhere ever, so I’m just going to assume Valeria is pulling a Dragnet and changing the names to protect the innocent. Or, Metallus is misremembering the details of what Valeria told him. I’m leaning toward the latter, because this story also has Valeria pointing out how virtuous she supposedly is, when in basically every other story I’ve read of her, that’s not the case. I mean, it’s pretty obvious (to me, anyway) that she and Conan were going to hook up after Red Nails. And they definitely fool around in SAVSCO 127. So yeah, Metallus is remembering some details wrong in his writing down of his adventures.

Followed by “At Last – the Movie,” a plug for the upcoming Conan movie.

3rd Story:
By Bruce Jones & Joe Chiodo

APPEARANCES:
Conan, Tanya the Fox, Kleel the Seer, Leeta (Tanya’s horse), thugs (Lharn & Cleb), Aryal (Tanya’s daughter, future & averted future), Brandais, his son (averted future) & his wife & her handmaiden

SYNOPSIS:
Tanya the Fox saves Kleel the Seer’s crystal ball from some thugs, so he rewards her by looking into her future. She’ll have a daughter, but she’ll die young when chased by a man. She demands to know who the man’s father is so she can stop him from being born. She kills the guy (Brandais) and saves his wife’s handmaiden, but the wife drowns. She learns from Kleel the handmaiden is the mother, so she returns and pays the woman to live on an island with her son. Kleel shows her the future again, but this time her daughter dies when her horse is scared. She decides to never have sex again so she’ll never have a daughter, but Kleel alters her memories. As she leaves she meets Conan and agrees to go to a nearby carnival with him.

NOTE:
Yes, it’s pretty clear that Aryal is Conan’s future daughter. She will still be born and grow up to about age 16-18, she just won’t be killed by some guy.

This one isn’t in Roy’s chronology. There’s no mention of where this is, but it’s near a woodland area (and not a desert). Conan appears in one panel and looks like he normally does, and the narration describes him as young. Conan’s in Ophir in SAVSCO 161, and is at least near Corinthia in COB 8, so between those, I guess?

By Michael Fleisher & John Buscema

SYNOPSIS:
After the Turbin-D’qhat army defeats the Rh’barr P’hmenn army, the populace celebrates Conan and his mercenaries, making King Maklos jealous. He throws a banquet to celebrate the victory but has his men attack the mercenaries; a dancer helps Conan and other escape. FLASHBACK:
20 years ago, King Tahrend avoided a war between Argos and Koth. Varrel Dorn leaves Argos for Koth but quickly regrets it; he’s forced to work on King Argentus’ tomb all the time (before main story). Pon K’tar smuggles Kothian soldiers into the statue’s head. Later, suspicious, Conan watches the colossus and sees soldiers exit the head (during main story).
SYNOPSIS:
Conan spars with King Tahrend, who is sick. Later, Conan meets a dancer and fools around with her in his room at the palace. In the morning, Queen Wrenna lets Conan know she wants to fool around with him; the dancer overhears and is jealous. The king tells Conan he wants to construct a monument to his soldiers, and only Varrel Dorn can do it, but he lives in Koth. Conan finds the artist who eagerly wants to return to Argos. He starts building a colossus and a few months later he’s almost done. However, rival artist Pon K’tar is secretly working with the Kothians and delays completion of the statue’s head. Conan is sent to get a special material for the statue’s eyes and fights cannibalistic fiends and an amphibious horror to get it. The colossus is finally completed and the dying King Tahrend is happy. That night Kothian soldiers come out of the statue’s head, but Conan is ready for them and ends the invasion. In the morning Conan learns the king died in his sleep.

Conan decides to visit Shadizar and check the place out. He gets into a barfight first, is arrested and forced to join the Royal Guard. Later, Conan finally visits the Palace of Pleasure and has a good time. The next day, the King of Zamora almost kills himself (accidentally) when he sees his dead wife; Conan saves him and he’s made the king’s personal bodyguard. That night a woman hypnotizes Conan into killing the king but he wakes up before doing it. Conan is arrested for attempted regicide. X’arthalla comes up with a new plan to kill the king. Conan escapes, learns the king is at the palace of pleasure, breaks in and saves him. X’arthalla tries to kill Conan by making herself look like his mother, but she’s killed by one of the pleasure girls.

Conan is 17 years old here.

According to X’arthalla, Conan thinks his mother has been dead for a long time.

SYNOPSIS:

A rich guy wants to know where the two goblets came from and sends his men to find Conan. Conan saves a beautiful woman from being raped and travels with her and her father. He tells Conan his story.

NOTE:
The intro page says this is a sequel to SAVSCO 74; in the story an editor’s note says SAVSCO 75. The latter was right. Also, SAVSCO 75 was two weeks ago.

The story ends in the middle of a flashback. It’s pretty obvious the story got chopped up to run across two issues instead of one, but why end it there?

2nd Story:
Reprint of COB 24.

3rd Story:
By Bruce Jones & Joe Chiodo

APPEARANCES:
Little People of Idlewood Swamp (inc Prince Kodom Shath & his mouse steed, King Mushkan, Baf), Farp & his mother, Rosalie (Farp’s sister, a lizard)

SYNOPSIS:
Prince Kodom Shath returns to Idlewood Swamp and learns there’s a dragon nearby. Meanwhile, a mother beats her son (Farp) for being lazy. Kodom receives an order from the king, but he demands to be paid. Farp goes looking for his sister. Kodom goes out to kill the dragon, but is terrified when he finds it. The dragon suddenly stops when Farp tugs on her leash; the dragon is Rosalie and Farp is a giant compared to the Little People.

SAVAGE SWORD OF CONAN #83 (December 1982)
By Michael Fleisher & Alfredo Alcala

APPEARANCES:
Conan, Capt. Bor’aqh Sharaq, Bharoni Hill People (inc Joya, F’qhar Razam), Argosseans (inc a crone, Serena, Bern, Amrus, guards), V’zhorr-Lok (also in fb), giant cyclops’, giant swamp-crab

FLASHBACK:
Recap of SAVSCO 82. V’zhorr-Lok eats his slaves if they pass out. One guy steals the demon’s magic mace and sends the demon to the hell-realm that he came from. However, every generation the demon has a chance to return, so a priest has to stop him.
SYNOPSIS:
The old man finishes telling his story to Conan. Sharaq gets a magic aging crystal from an old crone. Conan defeats the rich guy’s men. Sharaq gets a room for the night and the innkeeper tells a local guard Sharaq is there, wanting the bounty on Sharaq. Conan wakes up. Sharaq kills the guards and escapes. Conan and co. are captured by giant cyclops’; Conan kills them. Joya, the old man’s daughter is grateful for being saved (again), so she fools around with Conan. They’re attacked by a giant swamp-crab and the old man is killed. Conan and Joya arrive at the ruined temple and Joya prepares to sacrifice herself because her father isn’t there to do it himself. Sharaq arrives and so does V’zhorr-Lok; Conan sacrifices Sharaq instead of Joya and everything works out nicely.

NOTE:
An editor’s note points to SAVSCO 74, when it should have been SAVSCO 75.

An intro splash page and recap of last issue have been added in before we get to the flashback that was interrupted from last issue.

2nd Story:
By Alan Zelenetz & Mary Wilshire

APPEARANCES:
Conan, Ferus, Sylvanna & her sister, wild boar

SYNOPSIS:
In Cimmeria, young Conan and his friend Ferus are hunting wild boar. They’re taunted by two flirting women, but they turn out to be demons. Ferus is killed but Conan is spared because he was only hunting for food and not sport.

3rd Story:
Reprint of SAVSCO 1/2.

4th Story:
By Jo Duffy & Danny Bulanadi

This Solomon Kane story is already in the MCP.

SAVAGE SWORD OF CONAN #84 (January 1983)
By Michael Fleisher & Val Mayerik

APPEARANCES:
Conan, G’szarrh Bel Rhan & his guards (inc Thalek), Kahlili (G’szarrh Bel Rhan’s wife), Arenjun residents, Brotherhood of the Falcon, Raba-Than herdsmen (others in fb, inc Rala-Zalon (also in fb) & his mother (also in fb), Abar Bengelev), Shiremi (a mountain tribe), a sorcerer (in fb) & his mistress & her monster offspring (others in fb, inc ape beasts with tendrils, plant-beast)

FLASHBACK:
A monster continually attacks the Raba-Than herdsmen. One day Rala-Zalon decides to leave town (5 years ago). A sorcerer is burned to death because he raped someone. As he died he cursed her; her first child will be a monster. That monster will mate, and her first child will be a monster, and so on. Rala-Zalon’s mother mates with the monster and Rala-Zalon is born (decades ago).
SYNOPSIS:
In Arenjun, Conan breaks into a fancy mansion and meets Kahlili who wants Conan to help her escape her husband. When Conan hears someone is going to be hanged for his crime, Conan frees him and the trio get out of town. G’szarrh Bel Rhan, the rich husband, hires the Brotherhood of the Falcon to find the thieves and his wife. The vagabond, Rala-Zalon, says he’s returning home to take care of a monster problem and tells Conan his story. That night they’re attacked by tendrils and they notice Kahlili is gone; they follow a trail to a cave and find her surrounded by ape beasts with tendrils. Kahlili is rescued but she falls in love with Rala-Zalon. Two weeks later they near Rala-Zalon’s home town and discover Kahlili is pregnant. Rala-Zalon recruits his Shiremi tribe friends to help with the monster. During a blizzard they find the monster and kill it. Rala-Zalon’s mother appears and reveals the monster was Rala-Zalon’s father, and that he will turn into a monstr on his 18th birthday, which is today. Not wanting to birth a monster, Kahlili kills herself. Rala-Zalon transforms as the Brotherhood of the Falcon arrive. The assassins are killed, as is Rala-Zalon. Conan wanders off.

NOTE:
Again, Conan is 17 years old here.

I have a feeling that Kahlili killed herself for no reason. She was sleeping with Conan before Rala-Zalon, and only started getting morning sickness two weeks after fooling around with Rala-Zalon. Morning sickness usually doesn’t start until six weeks after conception, maybe sometimes four weeks. Two weeks is too early, making me think Conan was the father. Oops!

By Michael Fleisher & Gil Kane

APPEARANCES:
Conan (also in fb), Afghulis (inc Deffaq, Quelap’h, Srelek, Derlek, Malpoq, Garn, Quel Tah’r, Mahmouk, Brunneg), Ayella (goddess-princess of Kambuja, also in fb), God-King (the “Divine One,” king of Kambuja, Ayella’s father), Royal Army of Kambuja (inc Gen. Ti-Zoh, Capt. Melm), G’humen Thak (in fb) & his cult (also in fb), Kambuja residents (others in fb), Uttara Kuru residents, villagers, a caravan

FLASHBACK:
G’humen Thak sends some spies to watch Conan’s progress as he nears the sorcerer (during main story). Conan is made Ayella’s bodyguard, but she’s plagued by nightmares sent by G’humen Thak (before main story).
SYNOPSIS:
Conan is in a dungeon in Kambuja for sleeping with the God-King’s daughter Ayella. However, he’s released because Ayella has been abducted by the sorcerer G’humen Thak and the God-King wants Conan to rescue her. Conan begins the journey, but the Kambuja army try to kill him when they get out of town. Conan escapes and continue to the sorcerer alone. Conan meets up with the Afghulis and reclaims leadership of them. As they travel to the sorcerer’s place, some of the Afghulis ignore Conan’s orders and attack a village. Conan kills the mutinous Afghuli and they continue on. Conan spots some spies and interrogates them. Conan learns the sorcerer knows he’s coming. So, Conan leaves the Afghulis and disguises himself as a caravan member and sneaks into Uttara Kuru and quickly finds the captive Ayella. She tells Conan that she can’t leave as long as the sorcerer lives, so Conan decides to kill him.

SAVAGE SWORD OF CONAN #86 (March 1983)
By Michael Fleisher & Gil Kane

APPEARANCES:
Conan, Ayella, Afghulis (inc D’arleq, Zarnok), G’humen Thak & his cult (inc H’arad B’an, D’emel Q’at), Royal Army of Kambuja (inc Gen. Ti-Zoh, Capt. Melm), Uttara Kuru residents, man/lizard monster, demons

FLASHBACK:
Recap of SAVSCO 85.
SYNOPSIS:
Conan fights cultists and a man/lizard monster on his quest to find and kill G’humen Thak. Conan learns the sorcerer is rarely in town, and his secret treasure house is nearby. On the way there he’s attacked by the Kambuja army, who has rescued Ayella. Conan retrieves Ayella and continues toward the sorcerer after rejoining the Afghulis (Conan told them to follow a day later). Conan sets a fire and causes an avalanche to delay the Kambuja army. Once inside the treasure house, G’humen Thak attacks the Afghulis with magic, and summons demons to fight Conan. Conan kills the sorcerer and decides to celebrate his victory with Ayella.

2nd Story:
By Alan Zelenetz & Pablo Marcos

APPEARANCES:
Conan, Bêlit, Black Corsairs, pirates

SYNOPSIS:
Conan and the Black Corsairs rescue the captured Bêlit from rival pirates. Conan and Bêlit celebrate her return with vigorous sexy times.

NOTE:
An illustrated poem basically, but we’ve included things like this plenty of times. Not in Roy’s chronology, but there a specific window where this can fit. Some of the few breaks in action where everyone is together and on the sea looks to be between COB 71-72, 73-74, 97-98 and 98-99. COB 73 says COB 71 was “weeks ago,” so between COB 71-72, I guess?

SAVAGE SWORD OF CONAN #87 (April 1983)
By Michael Fleisher & John Buscema

APPEARANCES:
Conan, Zuagirs (inc Berneq, Darq’ab, Ronak, Stavro, Tarn), King Yezdigerd, Turan army (inc Mustafa) & residents, Uval Q’baal (Nemedian scholar), Darius (Uval’s asst., becomes Darius the Conqueror), Zuulda Thaal (sorcerer, in fb), Varlen D’aal (Zuulda Thaal’s son, becomes king of Kuthchemes, in fb), king of Kuthchemes (in fb), an Elder God (in fb), Kuthchemes soldiers (in fb), assassins (in fb), a mage (in fb), Nerus (a fisherman) & his wife, Devil-Bat riders, snow ape, fire demon, sea snake

FLASHBACK:
3,000 years ago, Zuulda Thaal prayed to an Elder God and received magic armor and arrows; his son Varlen D’aal used them to overthrow the evil king of Kuthchemes and became king himself. Assassins killed him to get his magic items, but Zuulda Thaal magically scattered the items across the world before he was killed.
SYNOPSIS:
In the Kharamun desert, Uval Q’baal is excited to enter a newly discovered tomb. He recounts the story of Zuulda Thaal and finds a map for his magic items. Meanwhile, Conan and the Zuagirs ambush the Turan army. King Yezdigerd is angry when he finds out. Conan and the Zuagirs run into the Devil-Bat riders attacking a guy. Conan drives the beasts away and meets Darius, Uval Q’baal’s assistant; Uval was killed by the riders and Darius shows them the tomb and tells them about the magic items. The Turan army overhears and plans to steal the items once the Zuagirs find them. They travel all over and Conan has to fight a snow ape, a fire demon and a giant sea snake, but they find the items. As the Zuagirs celebrate the Turan army attacks. Darius uses the magic items to defeat the Turanians, then attacks Conan revealing he killed Uval because he wanted the armor, gloves and bow. He beats the tar out of Conan and takes control of the Zuagirs. A month later Conan wakes up, having been tended to by a fisherman and his wife. While Conan was in his coma, Darius had overthrown King Yezdigerd and ruled Turan like a tyrant. Seven months later Conan is healed and he heads for the palace. Conan breaks the magic bow then tosses Darius in a forge, killing him.

NOTE:
Zuulda Thall is also spelled “Zulda” and “Zuula” in this story.

An editor’s note points to SAVSCO 75 for the previous appearance of the Devil-Bat riders; unfortunately, they appeared in SAVSCO 76.

2nd Story:
By Ernie Chan

APPEARANCES:
Conan, Kushite high priest & guards, young woman, serpent, tiger

SYNOPSIS:
Angry that a Kushite high priest is preparing to sacrifice a woman, Conan stops him and battles Kushite guards as he escapes with the woman. Once out of the city, Conan fights a serpent and a tiger to keep the woman safe.

NOTE:
A series of pin-ups that tell a short story, with a synopsis to explain some of the details, but we’ve included things like this plenty of times. Not in Roy’s chronology, Conan’s in Kush, which is south of Stygia. I’ll say between COB 105-106.

SAVAGE SWORD OF CONAN #88 (May 1983)
By Michael Fleisher & John Buscema

APPEARANCES:
Conan, Wazir Hassan Hassad Khan (also in Sabrina & Saroya’s thoughts), his “beaters” (inc Miklos) & his behemoth (a sea dragon), Sabrina & Saroya (twin sisters), Zamboula residents (inc Mustafa)

SYNOPSIS:
Conan arrives in Zamboula, learns the bounty on him has been raised, meets twin dancing ladies, gets into a barfight and ends up arrested. Conan is set to be executed but is saved by the twins, who turn out to be pretty good with arrows and swords. They rescued Conan because they want his help in robbing Wazir Hassan Hassad Khan. Conan agrees, and during their travels they have a bit of fun (wink wink, nudge nudge). When they near the wazir’s island the ladies knock Conan out. When Conan awakes in a forest, he sets traps for his pursuers which kills several of them. Meanwhile, the wazir thanks Sabrina & Saroya for bringing Conan to him for his hunt. As Conan continues to kill the wazir’s men, Zamboula soldiers arrive looking for Conan; Conan sets them against themselves and as they kill each other Conan looks for the twins for revenge. Conan battles with the wazir and kills him. Conan ties up the twins and takes him with as he sails for the Zuagirs. When the boat springs a leak, the twins fight amongst themselves over who weighs the most, but when they topple overboard a sea dragon eats them both. Conan continues to sail toward land.

NOTE:
Sabrina & Saroya have met Conan before at the “Melee at the Black Falcon.” This doesn’t sound familiar to me, but maybe it’s followed up on in a later issue. Mentioning it here just in case.

Also, “[Crom] helps only those who help themselves! Aye, and ofttimes not even those!”

2nd Story:
By Alan Zelenetz & Pablo Marcos

APPEARANCES:
Conan, Black Taurus, Shadizar residents

SYNOPSIS:
A weary Conan enters a tavern in Shadizar to get something to eat, and pushes someone off their chair in his rush. Black Taurus takes offense but when he realizes its Conan, he decides to let the matter go.

NOTE:
An illustrated poem basically, but we’ve included things like this plenty of times. Not in Roy’s chronology, it should be easy enough to place. Conan’s in Shadizar and is recovering from a battle he was in yesterday. He’s well-known, so this isn’t his first time there. On a quick glance, times where Conan’s in Shadizar later in his life are SAVSCO 177, COB 227, COB 273-274 & SAVSCO 156. Any of those would work, but his reputation would be stronger, later. So, after SAVSCO 156 (where he’s on his way to Shadizar), I suppose.

SAVAGE SWORD OF CONAN #89 (June 1983)
By Michael Fleisher & Alfredo Alcala

APPEARANCES:
Conan, Asgalun residents (inc Akbar Dh’bar, Iqbar Dh’bar, Fionqu’a, Damot), slave women (inc Naomi), slavers, Kheshatta residents, Darfar traders & guards (inc Gar’q, Hilat), Lars & his wife, Wlingmeli tribe, Aeiya (Sea Shrike), animated goddess statue

SYNOPSIS:
In Shem, Conan searches for treasure in a temple. When a statue comes to life to stop him he decides he’s happy enough with the gem he got. Arriving in Asgalun, Conan sells the gem and buys a new cloak. He stops some brigands from abducting a woman but is knocked out. Conan wakes up in a mansion, the rich brothers (they’re addicted to gambling) who live there want Conan to rescue their sister. He agrees and sails for Stygia and almost catches up to the abductors, but Aeiya the Sea Shrike causes the ship to capsize. They continue on foot only to learn the sister was sold to slavers. Conan travels to Kheshatta to intercept the slavers. Just as they near the slavers at an oasis a sandstorm envelopes them. They wait out the storm and continue to Kheshatta where the sister has been purchased by Darfar traders; as Conan is about to rescue her he’s knocked out and wakes up in a wagon, having been sold to an elderly couple. He escapes and learns the sister was sold to the Wlingmeli tribe to marry their chief. Conan rescues her and returns to Asgalun where the brother reveal it was all a ruse; the “sister” was hired, as were most of the slavers. She poisons the brothers and she and Conan leave with their money.

2nd Story:
By Michael Fleisher & Mary Wilshire

APPEARANCES:
Conan, Corin, Greshan, Cimmerians (inc Brule), Vanir (inc Gurneg, Naro), Dogar (a cave bear) & his mate

SYNOPSIS:
Vanir scouts plan an attack on Cimmeria. Meanwhile, older Cimmerian boys tease Conan, telling him the forest is haunted. He finds the Vanir scouts and kills them. Conan returns to his village with proof that he killed the Vanir, shaming Brule.

NOTE:
Conan is 12 years old here.

Savage Sword of Conan #100

Post by Col_Fury »

SAVAGE SWORD OF CONAN #100 (May 1984)
By John Buscema & Michael Fleisher

APPEARANCES:
Conan, “Goddess” Persaphne, Uggrahk (Doom-God, Prince of Blackness, Overlord of all demons), Arenjun residents (inc Genarro) & guards (inc Capt. Tharh Helm, Zalot), Kushites (inc Kwasuthu)

SYNOPSIS:
In Arenjun, Conan tries to sell a stolen stauette, but the fencer turns him in to the guards. Conan retreats into the mountains. In the morning Conan goes into the nearby forest and the guards follow. Traps left by Kushites picks the guards off one-by-one. Meanwhile, the Kushites flood Conan and capture him, bringing him to their encampment in front of an ancient temple. He’s told he’ll be sacrificed to their god. Conan learns their “goddess” Persaphne is actually just a normal lady playing a role. She caught smooching with him and sent away. The guard captain is brought in, also set to be sacrificed. The next day the ceremony begins and Persaphne slips Conan a knife. He frees himself and the guards and they fight the Kushites. Uggrahk comes to life and crushes the Kushite priest; its thrashing causes the temple to collapse. When Conan’s statuette is crushed Uggrahk turns back into a statue. Only Conan and the captain survive. When he tries to arrest Conan, Conan knocks him out and leaves him in the mountains.

NOTE:
The Kushites call Conan “Amra” here, seemingly recognizing him from his time with the Black Corsairs. However, Roy’s Conan Saga chronology says they call him Amra “prophetically.”

2nd Story
:
By Larry Yakata & June Brigman

APPEARANCES:
Conan, Sverre, Ygraine (sorceress), Zamoulans, half-dead

SYNOPSIS:
On his way to the Yamal Peninsula to meet Sverre, Conan stops some thieves from robbing a priest. As thanks, the priest gives Conan a gift he can only use once, and tells him to take the long way to Yamal, and not through the forest. Of course he goes through the forest and is attacked by the half-dead before meeting Ygraine, who says the forest is hers. They fool around, but when Conan says he’s leaving she has her half-dead tie him up. Conan decides to stay. Days later an old, shriveled Sverre arrives, confused that Ygraine is sleeping with Conan; she promised to stay with him. She destroys him with magic. Conan gets Ygraine drunk and leaves but is magically transported back to her. Conan uses the gift and he’s invisible to her, and he leaves the forest.
