Chronology Notes

By Andy Diggle, Adi Granov & Agustin Alessio

Synopsis: During WWII Cap saves Russian Sergeant Volkov from a Nazi during a raid on a rocket site. Later as a cosmonaut Volkov is possessed by an alien entity. On his return to Earth, he is secluded in Siberia. In the present Cap goes to Siberia and helps Volkov to die.

The flashback is the earliest chronological depiction of the race between Allied powers to capture German scientists (before the story in Wolverine 1000 set on April 30, 1945, where Fury informs Logan that Cap & Bucky are dead). (Maybe the reason they send Fury & Logan to get scientists is because Cap died.)

A voice says, "Slave labor. I've seen this in other secret rocket sites." If it is Captain America or the American officer speaking, this likely refers to Kohnstein captured on April 11 (as shown in The Twelve: Spearhead).
Mention is made of "atomic bombs" (cf. the discussion for Journey Into Mystery: Krakoa).

The snow in CA:LL matches the flashback in Secret Warriors 18 ("last time any of us [Howling Commandos] saw him for fifty-odd years), which would place both after Twelve 1 where Fury is side-to-side with Cap with the Howlers a little behind. (Admittedly, we could dismiss a few things in SecWarr 18 as Fury is prone to exagerate his war stories--I dismissed his story in ST3--and not everything is true in SECWARR 18 as Cap does speak German--but maybe the Howlers ignored that. Also the line "This was before Eric [Koenig] joined us" makes little sense this late in the war.)

The Captain America index places The Twelve 1 in Captain America's chronology so Cap was in the battle of Berlin. Earlier I combined the Twelve 1 appearance with the last Red Skull fight (TOS 72, CA@13) in order to respect the statement that Patriot and Spirit of '76 were "two of the first Americans into Berlin" (also to fit everything in the crowded April month) but even so the meeting of American and Russian troops shown in CA:LL 1 would take place before the official meeting of April 26.

If we separate the two Berlin appearances, the chronology for Cap & Howling Commandos becomes: Twelve 1 Cap & HCs in Berlin on April 25th, SecWarr 18 Cap & HCs in snowy terrain then Cap alone in CA:LL 1 in snowy Bavarian Alps to get a rocket scientist, Cap in Berlin again to raid Red Skull's bunker, Cap in Leipzig then to English Channel vs Zemo, Zemo secrets himself inside the secret bunker of Adolf Hitler, Hitler dies and Fury--in mission to capture a German scientist--tells Logan Cap died (Apr 30). Cap would take a plane every day.
Apr 25 Berlin
Apr 26 sent to rocket site in Bavarian Alps, Allied troops meet same day as historic meeting on the Elbe
Apr 27 parachuted in Berlin, fight vs Red Skull
Apr 28 English Channel
Apr 29 Zemo goes back to Berlin
Apr 30 Hitler killed by HT

It does solve the 26 April first meeting of Allied troops. Although very tight it works but it somewhat reinterprets the statement in CA@ 13 that Patriot, Spirit of '76 are two of the first Americans into Berlin.
In case Twelve 1 ends up before CA@13 (rather than in the middle of it), SECWARR 18-FB should be moved to make true the statement that it was the last time the Howling Commandos saw Cap.

Per a note, the present day section occurs before Captain America #10, 2013 (so before #1 as well).
