WHAT IF…? #7 (February 1978)
By Don Glut & Rick Hoberg
APPEARANCES:
Earth-616: the Watcher, Spider-Man
Earth-78127: Captain Spider (Flash Thompson), Spider-Man (Peter Parker), Dr. Eric Schwinner, Crusher Hogan, Chameleon, Tinkerer, Vulture
Earth-78227: Spider-Girl (Betty Brant), Spider-Man (Peter Parker), Dr. Eric Schwinner, J. Jonah Jameson, Robert F. Wagner (New York mayor, bts), burglar (Carradine), Ben Parker (bts)
Earth-78327: Spider Jameson (Col. John Jameson), Spider-Man (Peter Parker), Dr. Eric Schwinner, J. Jonah Jameson, Vulture (bts)
FLASHBACK:
Recap of Spider-Man’s origin, no new information.
SYNOPSIS:
The Watcher watches Spider-Man save a kid from falling out a window, then wonders WHAT IF… someone else were bitten by the radioactive spider? He looks at Earth-78127where Flash Thompson is bitten. As he leaves the science exhibit a car almost runs him over and he tosses it aside. He challenges the wrestler Crusher Hogan and arrogantly not realizing his ne strength, accidentally kills Hogan. Flash runs from the police, breaks into a costume shop and becomes Captain Spider to make up for killing someone. He battles Chameleon and Tinkerer and criminals start to fear him. Captain Spider battles the Vulture, but without web-shooters he can’t stop himself from falling when the Vulture picks him up and drops him. Peter Parker finds Flash in the street and assumes he’s dead. The Watcher looks at Earth-78227 where Betty Brant is bitten. Betty faints and Peter takes her out for coffee where she breaks a table. Petr runs her through some tests and determines she has spider-powers. He makers her some web-shooters and she makes a sexy costume, becoming Spider-Girl (Peter wanted to call her “Spider-Lady” but she thought that sounded too old). Betty’s too timid to use her strength and lets a burglar escape, and of course later uncle Ben is shot. She tracks the burglar to the Acme warehouse and learns it’s the same guy she let escape. The responsibility is too much for her, so Betty quits being Spider-Girl. The Watcher then looks at Earth-78327 where John Jameson is bitten. Jonah designs a suit for him and he gets a jetpack to fly around with. He hears of a crashing space capsule and saves the astronaut inside, but his jet pack runs out of fuel and he’s crushed. With his son dead, Jonah erects a statue of Spider Jameson so everyone can remember how awesome he was. The Watcher then looks at all three realities; Peter saved the irradiated spider and derived a serum from its venom, giving himself spider-powers and becoming Spider-Man in all three realities.
NOTE:
All three of these spider-people were seen in the Spider-Verse crossover. Betty just quit; I’m sure if the Inheritors attacked that at least would have brought her out of retirement, but she could have resumed being Spider-Girl at any time. Flash might not have been dead and Peter was just jumping to conclusions (that’s not the intention here, though). Jameson, though, really died. And yet, there he is in SVERSE 2/5. I guess he was resurrected.
WI? 7 is already in the Watcher’s and Spider-Man’s chronologies.

FLASHBACK:
Recap of Spider-Man’s origin, no new information.
SYNOPSIS:

Col. John Jameson dies because Spider-Man is busy guest hosting the Tonight Show. Peter’s aunt and uncle are disgusted that Peter is using his powers for selfish gain. Jameson has a reporter find out who Spider-Man really is and reveals his identity to the public. Spider-Man becomes a publicity agent for super heroes. When Jameson won’t leave Spider-Man alone, Spider-Man publicly ties Jameson to protection rackets, which causes him to lose the Daily Bugle. Jameson teams with the Sinister Six and tries to kill Spider-Man, but Daredevil sacrifices himself trying to protect him. Spider-Man finally learns that with great power there must also come great responsibility.
NOTE:
This is already in the Watcher’s chronology, but not Spider-Man’s.

Peter forgot the lunch aunt May made for him, so May rushes it to the science exhibit and is bitten by the radioactive spider. Realizing she has super-powers (like Samson in the bible, she thinks), she makes herself a costume to make money off the powers (how do you go from quoting the bible to greed in less than ten seconds?) and becomes Spider-Ma’am. Meanwhile, the Leap Frog has robbed a candy store. Spider-Ma’am ends up defeating Leap Frog in her front yard; Peter comes home from the science exhibit and passes out.
NOYE:
No Watcher in this story, but Sider-Ma’am (and Peter and Ben) appears again in Spider-Verse.

He checks with the X-Men and Fantastic Four, but they can’t help either. Doctor Octopus takes some hostages so Spider-Man beats him up, but now everyone knows he has extra arms. Joe Robertson convinces Jonah to stop picking on Spider-Man; the Bugle doesn’t want to be see giving someone with disabilities a hard time. Months later Mr. Fantastic makes fancy sleeves that make the extra arms invisible and intangible, so Peter Parker can resume his life. Years later, May Parker dies of natural causes, so Peter leaves Gwen Stacy (who didn’t die on the bridge) and commits his life to be Spider-Man full time. He becomes a hero to everyone with disabilities.
NOTE:
There’s a montage of various villains Spider-Man will fight, but it’s a symbolic image.

About What If 23- the weird thing is that the story establishes that the Crypto-Man's creator was a worshipper of the Dark Gods and the boy Jarella died saving was an illusion. It's not clear if this was the case in 616.

Re: What If…? #7, 19, 23 & v2 #42; SI:I♥NYC /4
Yeah, it's like they're trying to say that Jarella died for no reason at all.
Also, I forgot to mention that according to WI? 19, uncle Ben was born in 1902 and died in 1960-something (according to his tombstone), putting him in his early-to-mid sixties at the time of Amazing Fantasy #15.
