FLASHBACK:
King Yildiz promotes Conan and Juma to captains for saving his granddaughter, and Conan is sent on another mission; give a letter to King Shu of Kushan in western Khitai. King Shu is very nice and agrees to a treaty of trade, and supplies Conan with Duke Feng, a guide who will show them the way back.
SYNOPSIS:
As the Turanian troopers he’s leading make camp for the night, Conan is restless. Duke Feng says they’re near King Hsia’s tomb and maybe that’s why Conan is on edge. He says there’s treasure in the tomb and leads him to the monolith that marks the tomb’s location. The monolith is magnetic and Conan is trapped on it by his armor. Feng explains he doesn’t want his people mingling with the west and takes the treaty scroll from Conan. He says his men will be eaten by the nearby Jaga tribe and as he leaves Feng plays a flute which attracts the jelly-like thing on the monolith. As the creature’s mass drips down toward Conan, he frees himself by tearing the strap of his armor and he falls out. He throws Feng into the monster and after he’s dead, sets the monster on fire. Conan returns to camps and tells everyone to leave before the Jaga arrive.

SYNOPSIS:

The woman, Ilga, tells Conan her story. Conan wants to make camp for the night in a cave but she protests, so he knocks her out. Ilga hears music and see lights and wanders toward them, still naked. Later, Conan wakes up and searches for her, finding strange channels in the snow, and his dead horse stripped of its meat. The wizard set himself up as king and summoned a demoness to help him keep control. She killed the wizard and still rules today, but she is a life force vampire (centuries ago).

Turanian soldiers prepare to ambush the Zuagirs. When Conan and the Zuagirs arrive there’s a big fight. The Turanians are killed but Boghra Khan survives, who Conan recognizes. Conan learns Vardanes betrayed the Zuagir so they set out to find him. When they enter “the Place of Ghosts” in the desert the Zuagir become nervous. When Conan refuses to listen to their worries he’s drugged and they leave him in the desert. Conan continues after Vardanes on foot. Meanwhile, Vardanes has found a walled city in “the Place of Ghosts.” He’s brought inside by Akhlatim soldiers. Conan wakes up in a tent. Zillah, daughter of Enosh, tells Conan they found him in the desert three days ago and tended to him. Enosh tells Conan his story and says he’s the liberator Akhlati needs to rid them of the demoness. Meanwhile, Vardanes is fed and bathed and pushed into a great hall. He finds several statues and a mummy on a throne. When he takes the golden mask off the corpse it comes alive and begins to turn him into a statue. Meanwhile, Enosh sneaks Conan into the city. He finds Vardanes being turned into a statue and decapitates him. The demoness starts to drain Conan’s life force but he notices the mask and stabs her in her third eye. She turns to dust as she dies. Conan bids farewell to Zillah and Enosh and heads toward Zamboula, where he’s never been.

SAVAGE SWORD OF CONAN #36 (December 1978)
By Roy Thomas & John Buscema

APPEARANCES:
Conan (also as “Ishbak”), Gen. Mazdak (also as “Farouz,” also in fb) & his Hyrkanian cavalry (others in fb), Gen. Imbalayo (also in fb) & his Kushite troop (inc Keluka, others in fb), Gen. Othbaal (also in fb) & his Anakian troop (others in fb), King Akhirom (of Shem, also in fb), Zeriti (Akhirom’s witch, also in fb), Rufia (Opherian slave-woman, also in fb), Abdastharh (priest of Pteor), Mattenbaal (asst. priest), Asgalun residents (inc Khannon, others in fb), smoke demon

FLASHBACK:
Zeriti the Stygian witch has driven King Akhirom insane; he’s outlawed things like wine and lights at night. Othbaal won Mazdak’s slave-woman in a game of chance. Having killed his brother Uriaz to become king, Akhirom keeps power by having hired three mercenary troops.
SYNOPSIS:
In Asgalun, a Hyrkanian thinks Conan is following him. They’re attacked by some Kushites who were following the Hyrkanian. They kill the attackers. The man collects a ring off one of the Kushites, says he’s Farouz of Mazdak’s cavalry and informs Conan of recent happenings in Asgalun. Conan says he’s looking to kill Othball for a betrayal. Farouz doesn’t care for Othbaal so he agrees to help. They sneak into the palace and kill him. Rufia flees and Farouz leaves the Kushite’s ring next to the body before they follow her. He plots to put the two factions against each other. Rufia is spotted by Akhirom and she’s taken to his place. To save herself she proclaims the madman a god, and he agrees. He orders the statues of Pteor destroyed. When the high priest protests he’s killed, which causes the populace to revolt. As the looting begins the Anakians and Kushites begin warring with each other; Akhirom doesn’t care. Conan confronts “Farouz,” telling him he knows he’s actually Mazdak. Conan says if Imbalayo is killed Mazdak will be the only general left and could therefore take over Asgalun. Conan learns Zeriti has been put aside; maybe she’ll help him steal Rufia. Re-entering the palace, Conan runs into some Kushites and has to escape. Meanwhile, Akhirom decides that sex is for mortals and gives Rufia to Imbalayo, who then gives her to Ziriti under blackmail. Conan sneaks through the city and finds Ziriti’s place. Ziriti tortures Rufia before calling forth a smoke demon to kill her, but she’s killed by Imbalayo. Conan arrives and Imbalayo recognizes him as Amra, but the smoke demon reduces Imbalayo to a bag of skin filled with organs. Conan convinces Mazdak to lead the revolt roiling outside and become ruler of Asgalun. Ziriti raises gurgling, not quite dead, and flees. Conan and Rufia flee the rioting city. Akhirom tries to prove his godhood to the populace by flying, but of course falls from his tower and dies. Conan and Rufia ride north.

NOTE:
Based on “Hawks Over Shem” by REH & L. Sprague deCamp.

Conan is chasing Othbaal for revenge; I wonder if that’s been shown in an issue of SAVSCO I haven’t read yet?

It’s said that Akhirom killed his brother Uriaz, the previous king, to become the current king. I wonder if that’s been shown in an issue of SAVSCO I haven’t read yet?

When Rufia tries to figure out Conan’s name, she says Imbalayo called him Amra. He responds with “Don’t say that name in Shem!” hee hee!

Followed by “A Gazetteer of the Hyborian Age, Part V.”

Hey Daron, would you happen to know about when the time displaced Conan currently appearing in Savage Avengers (whom I assume will eventually return to his proper time during the Hyborian Age) originated?

While Daron's in his think-tank, i'll mention that Conan says he decapitated Kulan-Gath "many winters ago." That happened in Conan: The Flame and the Fiend (Marvel 2000), so it's several years after that, but prior to M/TU 79.
Out in the Land Down-Under, beneath a rocky outcrop, deep within the back paddock, dwells the Stray Lamb.

The biggest clue we have is in A:NRH 6, where Conan is still in mourning over Bêlit’s death (so much so that he doesn't even want to fool around with Wanda). Also, when Conan meets Scarlet Witch in A:NRH 5-6 they’re a few days’ camel ride away from Shadizar and in a desert setting, somewhere in Zamora (or near its border). In later issues of A:NRH it’s made very clear that Bêlit’s death is fairly recent.

We’re at least after COB 100, and must also be after COB 105 when he’s no longer with the Balumas. Conan’s near Kush in COB 106, and he looks to be in southern Shem until COB 115. COB 116 is set in the past. By COB 117 he’s in Zamboula, which is south of Shadizar. In COB 118-120 he’s back in southern Shem and feeling wistful. “Months” separate COB 120-121 (but that can probably be ignored, because the stories they tried to put in that gap can't possibly go there). In COB 121-126 he’s near Stygia again. In CO@ 6 he’s heading north and is in Nemedia, and by COB 127 he’s returned to Cimmeria.

In theory, it looks like we have two possible spots. He might be from between COB 115-117, or from between COB 126 & CO@ 6. If we wanted to keep it as close to Bêlit’s death as possible, then after COB 115. If we wanted a smoother geographic placement, then after COB 126.

As for Conan decapitating Kulan Gath several winters ago… we may have to fudge the details a bit.

Conan met Kulan Gath in COB 15, and Kulan Gath did die in that issue, but Terhali killed him, not Conan. It’s possible that Conan decapitated his corpse off-panel to make sure the wizard was dead, I suppose. At any rate, COB 15 would be “many winters ago” in relation to either COB 115 or 126.

I'm leaning toward after COB 115 personally; in COB 115 Red Sonja unintentionally reminds Conan about Bêlit’s death, he then bests her in battle but then refuses to sleep with her, still upset about Bêlit’s death. A:NRH following this fits nicely, I think.

Also, as for CO:F&F 1-3, it has to take place at least after COB 275 (and SAVSCO 235/2) for various reasons. I'm going to eventually analyze CO:F&F 1-3 but I'm saving it for later. :)

Also also, in case I wasn't clear, A:NRH 10 ends with Conan in the present-day Savage Land, which is where he still is in SAVA 1.
