Also, a black, brutish man-like creature (Natohk’s emissary) visits Natohk at night and speaks gibberish. Fahim recognizes Natohk as Thugra Khotan.
SYNOPSIS:
Shevatas the thief comes across a ruined city and finds a giant ivory dome. Entering the tomb he finds mountains of riches, but he’s awoken the corpse inside and is killed. Elsewhere, Princess Yasmela is contacted magically by Natohk, who has risen an army of 15 cities; he says she will soon belong to him. Yasmela’s handmaiden Vateeza suggests they pray to Mitra for help. They do, and he speaks: go into the street and place the fate of your kingdom in the hands of the first man Yasmela meets. She sees Conan and does just that. Yasmela informs her counselors of her decision; they argue at first but agree to her decision. Soon after Conan leads the Khoraja army in search of Natohk. They camp that night and Natohk magically contacts Yasmela; she runs screaming from her tent and Conan calms her down. Fahim tells Conan what he knows. The next day they find Natohk’s army; Conan orders the archers to pick some of them off, think Natohk has a magic plan. Count Thespides thinks using archers is cowardly and charges his knights to fight. Natohk kills them, of course. Seeing Conan was right the army follows his orders without question. During the following battle Conan meets and kills Prince Katuman. When another flank of Conan’s forces arrives from behind Natohk’s army is defeated, but Natohk and his emissary arrive with the black camel. They abduct Yasmela so Conan follows. When they reach the ivory dome the emissary throws Natohk and Yasmela off the chariot; the camel sprout wings and they fly away. Natohk takes Yasmela inside where he plans to sacrifice her. Conan kills him and saves Yasmela. To celebrate the victory Yasmela insists she and Conan have sexy fun times.

Followed by “Chronicles of the Sword,” an informal history of sword-and-sorcery fiction by Lin Carter.

The second story, a Blackmark tale is not canon.

CONAN THE BARBARIAN #250 (November 1991)
By Roy Thomas & Mike Docherty

APPEARANCES:
Conan (also in fb), Red Sonja, Zula, Princess Yasmela & her army, Amalric & his Free Companions (inc Durgim, Fahim), Count Thespides (corpse), Prince Katuman, Hobb (also in fb), Queen Yaila (in fb), Lord Godrik (in fb), Zugite cult (inc Shathrazan, Otanes, Myrccinus), Shevatas (corpse), Death’s boatman (Charon), Zug (dweller below), Khoraja residents, Zahmann residents (in fb)

FLASHBACK:
In Zahmann, a city-state between Corinthia and Koth, Hobb learns Queen Yaila is having an affair (with Conan) while her new husband is away, so he decides to pull a prank. Hobb tells Conan assassins are in the palace, so Conan mistakenly attacks the returning Lord Godrik. Yaila stops Conan from killing her husband. Hobb runs away. (years after COB 12, and at least a while back)
SYNOPSIS:
Conan and friends return to Khoraja. Conan spots Hobb in the crowd and chases him, but Hobb trips and passes out, luckily hiding him from Conan sight. That night everyone celebrates in various ways. Hobb meets Fahim in a tavern and they talk about Thugra Khotan’s treasure and are overheard by mercenaries; they make Hobb and Fahim show them where it is. Yasmela and Conan make plans to free her captive brother. Hobb and co. arrive at the ivory dome; Fahim is killed when they tire of his warnings. Conan and friends arrive but Yasmela and Red Sonja are taken captive. Conan and Zula follow them into the ivory dome where the Zugite cultists are searching for the river of death, rumored to be under the dome. The cultists pay Death’s boatman to take Sonja and Yasmela across the river. Later, Conan and Zula arrive and fight the boatman. Conan tosses some of his coins in the water; when the boatman dives in the river to fetch them, he dissolves. They take the boat and are taunted with visions of lost loves, then Conan fights shades of himself, a 16 year old version and an 80 year old version. The fight ends when Hobb falls into the boat. Meanwhile, Sonja and Yasmela watch as the cultists enter a cave of death. Conan and Zula arrive and they all take the boat back to where they came from. As they leave Zug awakens and they escape only by causing the ivory dome to collapse on top of the creature. Sonja and Zula leave for their own adventures while Conan, Hobb and Yasmela return to Khoraja.

NOTE:
Based in part on “Gates of Empire” by REH.

Cover by Steve Lightle.

It turns out Katuman didn’t die in SAVSCO 2. I guess he was just mostly dead.

The 80 year old version of Conan calls himself “Conqueror of the Sunset Land.”

Yasmela is 20 years old.

I’m placing the flashback for Conan as he travels north between SAVSCO 217/2 (Shem) and SAVSCO 155 (Corinthia).

Col_Fury wrote: Sun Feb 17, 2019 12:06 amAlso, Blackmark appeared in some Conan comics so I did a bit of digging.

As far as I can tell, there are only two Blackmark stories. The original (“Blackmark”) and a sequel (“The Mind Demons”). “Blackmark” was originally published by Bantam Books as a paperback book sized graphic novel in 1971.

SAVSCO 1-4 is a serialized reprint of Bantam Books’ Blackmark paperback, but with a reorganized panel/page layout.

KULLB 2 is the first chapter of “The Mind Demons.” M/PRV 17 reprints KULLB 2 (but with a reorganized panel/page layout), then finishes the story.

Blackmark is not a Marvel property, and has no crossover with any Marvel characters that I can find. These aren't adaptations of something (like say, Dracula, Frankenstein's monster or Conan), so these aren't "the Marvel versions" of something. They're just the "Gil Kane version."
