Conan the Barbarian #251-260

CONAN THE BARBARIAN #251 (December 1991)
By Roy Thomas & Tony DeZuniga, Sandy Plunkett & Del Barras

APPEARANCES:
Conan (also in fb & fb-fb), Yasmela (princess of Khoraja), Hobb, fishermen (in fb, inc Ossian (also in fb-fb), Yehba, Tarim, Silas), Darus (in fb-fb), Shing Luu (sorcerer, in fb & fb-fb), demon beasts (in fb, also in fb-fb as mercenaries)

FLASHBACK:
In Cimmeria, young Conan learns a trick to take care of wolves (fb-fb). Ossian builds really good boats which makes Darus angry. He sends mercenaries against Ossian to try to scare him away but it doesn’t work so he hires a sorcerer, Shing Luu, who transformed the mercenaries into demon beasts (fb-fb, 9:4-10). In Ravenwerk on the coast of the Vialet Sea, Conan happens by some fishermen being attacked by demon beasts. Conan helps and meets Ossian who tells Conan what’s going on. They’re attacked by more demon beasts and Conan comes up with a plan. When the demon beats are killed, Shing Luu becomes angry and turns himself into a dragon, attacking Ravenwerk. Ossian kills the sorcerer by crashing scaffolding onto him, but Ossian is paralyzed. Conan wanders off (2-21). A year or two ago, in a tavern south of Vialet, Conan learns of Ossian’s fate (fb, 22:3). Ossian built a flying machine from the dragon’s wings and flies around all the time (fb-fb, 22:4).
SYNOPSIS:
Conan tells Yasmela a story while Hobb snores.

NOTE:
The flashback takes place a decade ago, shortly after the fall of Makkalet to the army of Turan. So shortly after COB 26, then. In the fb-fb, it’s before Conan left Cimmeria and he’s between 13-15 years old. As for the few years ago fb, looking through Roy’s chronology it looks to fit between COB 216-217.

CONAN THE BARBARIAN #252 (January 1992)
By Roy Thomas & Mike Docherty

APPEARANCES:
Conan (also in fb), Hobb, Queen Vammatar & her witchman, Daramish guards, rebels & residents (inc Raquella, animated corpse), Shuma-Gorath (mentioned)

FLASHBACK:
Recap of SAVSCO 3, after which Conan gets drunk.
SYNOPSIS:
Conan awakes from a nightmare of Cimmeria being fire-bombed while people chant Shuma-Gorath and decides to travel to Cimmeria. As they travel they stop by a small town, Daramish where a funeral procession is happening and a witchman warns them of Shuma-Gorath. That night Conan is attacked by the dead girl; he throws her out the window. Conan goes searching for the missing Hobb and finds him messing around with an animated corpse in the horse stables. They’re confronted by Queen Vammatar and her witchman; Conan kills him and they continue toward Cimmeria.

NOTE:
It looks like these issues are already in Shuma-Gorath’s chronology, but I’ll double check to make sure they’re correct. Speaking of, while the story is titled “the Second Coming of Shuma-Gorath” I’m not sure how Shuma-Gorath is -BTS here. Maybe it has something to do with Conan’s dream? I guess I’ll find out soon enough.

CONAN THE BARBARIAN #253 (February 1992)
By Roy Thomas & Dave Hoover

APPEARANCES:
Conan, Hobb, Kulan Gath (also in fb), Queen Yaila, Prince Borrin (King Strabonus’ nephew, also in fb), Lord Godrik, Imojen & her men, palace guards

FLASHBACK:
Recap of COB 12 & 15. Kulan Gath takes over Zahmahn and captures Prince Borrin.
SYNOPSIS:
Conan and Hobb arrive at Zahmahn to visit Queen Yaila & Lord Godrik, but are surprised to see Kulan Gath alive and running things. Hobb escapes and meets Imojen and her rebels. Conan is tossed into the pit where he meets Prince Borrin. The rebels sneak into the palace and are caught by Kulan Gath; he enchants half to kill the other half of the group. Conan frees himself from the pit then Borrin, and is shocked to see the pit has eaten Borrin’s hands and feet leaving only bones. Conan kills him at the prince’s request. Conan confronts Kulan Gath; the sorcerer calls forth his giant skeleton bird and escapes. Yaila and Godrik awaken from their funk, thanks Conan and prepare a feast to celebrate their liberation.

NOTE:
Conan’s pretty clear that he hasn’t seen Kulan Gath since COB 15.

Some doubt is cast as to whether this is really Prince Borrin.

I’m not seeing how Shuma-Gorath is -BTS here.

Later, Vammatar has Conan watch while her undead soldiers battle their former comrades in the arena. Disgusted, Conan jumps in to help but can only save Gorm. They escape when Njal’s daughter Rann arrives with Aesir reinforcements. Conan and Gorm find enchanted weapons to defeat the zombies and they escape with Rann.
SYNOPSIS:
Everyone enjoys the celebratory feast while Conan tells tales from his past.

NOTE:
A sequel to SAVSCO 39, explaining how Conan got out of Queen Vammatar’s custody.

OK, Shuma-Gorath is definitely not -BTS at the dinner party.

As they travel Conan shows the army where the lost city of Lanjau is and they camp for the night. Inside they find the corpses of the Menalos army they were expecting to fight. They’re confronted by Hyperborean witchmen; when Conan attacks he’s knocked out. When the army leaves, the witchmen starts reviving the corpses, chat with Queen Vammatar and awaken the Keepers of the Treasure-Crypt, who wants the Jade Serpent Conan found years ago. The army returns to Corinthia, some of them get the purple plague and the witchmen and Keepers attack. Conan said he told them so, Hobb runs off and the waitress asks Conan to protect her. The hole up in a Mitra church but Conan gets the plague and a Keeper breaks down the door.

NOTE:
COB 8 was 11 years ago.

It’s spelled both Hermion and Hermios here.

Gwendala (the waitress) is… very blessed up front. She’s probably going to have back problems later in life.

Again, I’m not seeing how Shuma-Gorath is -BTS here.

CONAN THE BARBARIAN #256 (May 1992)
By Roy Thomas & Mike Docherty

Conan, Hobb, Gwenalda, Kulan Gath, animated corpses (inc Capt. Hermios) Corinthian residents (inc a Mitra priest), Hyperborean witchmen (“Purple Priests,” inc Torumjumala), Keepers of the Treasure-Crypt

Kulan Gath calls in to remind Conan he wants him to kill Vammatara. The walking purple dead shamble into the tavern and attack. Conan starts to feel better and tries to lure the Keepers away with the Jade Serpent. The Keepers start to kill the purple dead and the witchmen to get to the talisman; when all of those are dead Conan takes the talisman back to Lanjau with the Keepers following; Conan traps them in a chasm. Hobb and Gwendala arrive and they continue toward Cimmeria.

NOTE:
Surprise! I’m not seeing how Shuma-Gorath is -BTS here.

The blind girl reveals herself as Kulan Gath and knocks Demetrio out. Kulan Gath calls his skeletal dragon and they all escape.

NOTE:
Conan reveals he’s had the same nightmare every night since COB 252. Maybe that’s why Shuma-Gorath has been -BTS? I’ll wait to see what happens when he finally appears.

By Roy Thomas & Mike Docherty

APPEARANCES:

Conan leaves for Cimmeria hoping neither of them feels harshly toward the other. Arriving in his homeland Conan finds nothing but corpses, confirming his nightmare was real. CONAN THE BARBARIAN #270 (July 1993)
By Roy Thomas & Mike Docherty

APPEARANCES:
Conan & his Free Companions (inc Drago, Jubal, Lt. Milo, Zorka), Isparana, Xuthl (fire demon), “Acheron” (an amnesiac Aquilonian), Kothian army, fishermen, Wrarrl

SYNOPSIS:
Acheron dreams about Wrarrl devouring some souls. Meanwhile, Conan and the Free Companions kill some Kothian soldiers, who are chasing them over Borrin’s death; some of the Companions complain about Conan’s leadership. They come upon the Lake of Salts and steal a bunch of boats from fishermen; Conan stops Jubal from killing some for fun. Conan regrets stealing the fishermen’s means of livelihood. After sailing through the night they find the Islands of Pearl greeted by Acheron. Conan is curious about the island’s tropical climate located so far north. Acheron offers his supplies if Conan takes him with them. Jubal steals Acheron’s flask thinking it contains treasure, but instead it’s a mist that smells like everyone’s individual favorite scent. Jubal drinks it, is set ablaze and Xuthl, a fire demon, explodes from within him. Without knowing how or why, Acheron traps Xuthl in the flask again and they leave the island. Conan weigh s down the flask and throws in in the sea. He notices Isparana is attracted to Acheron and knows he’s lost something. As they sail away, the tropical island’s vegetation begins to wither and die. Meanwhile, Wrarrl vows to return soon.

CONAN THE BARBARIAN #271 (August 1993)
By Roy Thomas & Mike Docherty

APPEARANCES:
Conan & his Free Companions (inc “Acheron,” Drago, Lt. Milo, Zorka), Isparana, Wrarrl, Kothians

FLASHBACK:
Recap of CB 45.
SYNOPSIS:
Conan and the Companions arrive at Dagoth Hill within the Dark Valley. While the Companions set up camp Isparana and Acheron sneak off to do the nasty. Later, Acheron is awoken y a voice and the pair find the giant armor of Wrarrl. Conan arrives and stops Acheron from putting on the helmet. Isparana thinks Conan is jealous and fights him, allowing Acheron to put it on. Just then the Kothian army attacks. Conan and Isparana leave to fight so Acheron puts on the rest of the armor and is transformed into Wrarrl. Wrarrl attacks both Kothians and Free Companions, devouring their souls. Conan attacks, but Wrarrl throws him into a chasm of stars and seals it behind.

NOTE:
It’s revealed here that “Acheron” is only a homunculus constructed by Xuthl to house Wrarrl’s essence until reunited with his armor.

Wrarrl returns and says the Companions will be his army to expand his kingdom. Conan returns, battles Wrarrl and loosens his helmet. Acheron emerges and kills himself along with Wrarrl.

He asks if anyone is hiring mercenaries and learns just how hooked people are on Yatha’s lotus. Conan finds Yatha’s warehouse, barricades it and slaughters Yatha and his men and burns his product.

NOTE:
Conan orders another “Sultanapur Sling” here, as he did in a recent issue. He really likes that drink! (this one wasn’t very good, though)

Conan mentions he hasn’t seen Jenna in a long time.

CONAN THE BARBARIAN #274 (November 1993)
By Roy Thomas & Mike Docherty

Conan escapes and attacks, but a female version of the Night-God flies by and grabs Conan. She takes him to a large cave and says it’s her home; Conan finds her strangely attractive. They’re about to kiss when Conan realizes the Night-Goddess has been nabbing prey and feeding her children. He burns the offspring and she attacks, but he’s able to kill her as well, though he regrets doing so.

CONAN THE BARBARIAN #275 (December 1993)
By Roy Thomas & Mike Docherty

APPEARANCES:
Conan & his Free Companions (inc Drago, Lt. Milo, Zorka, Hundolph, Kraggos), Isparana, Shenkov & his Kozaks (inc Sablat, Tania, Pteor, Borthis, Turghol (also in fb), Roxelana, Tania (also in fb), others in fb), Prince Yezdigerd & his army (inc Capt. Rimanni), magic fire demons

FLASHBACK:
50 years ago the Kozaks were farmers but Turanians turned them into rogues. Turghol’s wife Tania activates the Blood Jewel of Bel-Hissar, releasing fire demons on her village.
SYNOPSIS:
Conan reunites with the Free Companions to discover Milo has taken over and Conan is no longer welcome with them. Conan accepts the decision, but when Drago insults him as he leaves, Conan kills Drago. The Companions attack and Conan is knocked out. Conan is tied to a stake while they decide what to do with him and Isparana reveals she’s pregnant with “Acheron’s” child. She leaves him a knife and he escapes; he ponders killing Isparana to avoid her child becoming a reborn Wrarrl but decides against it. She did help him escape, after all. He’s knocked out again and tied to a horse, to be dragged to death. The horse eventually stops, Conan frees himself and passes out. He’s awoken by Turghol (the mute from COB 27) and they ride together for a while. Conan learns the sign language for “friend.” They meet the Kozaki, who Turghol is a member of. They return to their village and find it ablaze, with several dead and dying. A living magic flame attacks the new arrivals but Conan figures out how to snuff them out. With their leader dead the Kozaki make Conan their new leader. Turanian soldiers arrive and say they have some Kozak families; Conan leaves to verify before negotiating. He arrives at the Turanian camp and learns Yezdigerd is in charge. Conan is tossed in with the Kozaki refugees and meets Turghol’s wife, Tania, who tells him Yezdigerd has the Blood Jewel. In the morning Conan is to be executed, but Tania causes a distraction; while Conan fights the soldiers Tania rushes into Yezdigerd’s tent and activates the Jewel. With the Turanians busy with fire-demons, Conan and the Kozai escape. When they return Conan is introduced to Roxelana, the previous chief’s wife. As the new boss she’s his; Conan refuses as he chooses his own women. They see an army in the distance and assume they’re Turanians, but when they get closer Conan realizes they’re the Free Companions. oops.

NOTE:
To be continued in SAVSCO 218!

Isparana has been in a state of mournful heartache ever since “Acheron” died.

The letters page is an editorial by Roy Thomas saying goodbye to the book and thanking everyone involved, including both his wives Jean and Dann.

Wrarrl typically goes by the codename "the Devourer of Souls". He feeds by transforming human souls to a worm-like form, which he proceeds to eat. See: http://www.marvunapp.com/Appendix/devors.htm

He is a Conan foe original to Marvel stories, and frequently recurring. Based on his Appendix profile, his appearances go in the following order:

*Savage Sword of Conan #90 (July, 1983).
*Savage Sword of Conan #96 (January, 1984).
*Savage Sword of Conan #108-109 (January-February, 1985).
*Conan the Barbarian #187 (October, 1986).
*Conan the Barbarian #189-191 (December, 1986-February, 1987).
*Conan the Barbarian #193-199 (April-October, 1987)
*Conan the Barbarian Annual #12 (1987).
