FLASHBACKS:
Kull adds to his reputation when a larger force of Picts sinks a skiff on which he and other Sea-Mountain warriors have embarked to hunt whales, and he alone survives. Kull pursues the ship, whose Pictish crew have acquired most un-Pictish clothing, He slays several of the crew, and the remainder think him an avenging ghost (4-13) [Kull]. Kull the gladiator is at the Arena of the City of Wonders and matched against a young man, Andreus, who has become a gladiator to win his lady-love's heart. Kull disarms the youth but refuses to kill him, even when ordered to do so by the enraged King Borna. Borna angrily orders a squad of archers to shoot the Atlantean, but a nobleman, Count Murom Bora Ballin, steps in and buys Kull's freedom from the arena (16-25) [Kull, King Borna, Count Murom Bora Ballin]. An expansion of Kull killing King Borna and becoming King Kull (30:2-40:6) [Kull, King Borna, Count Ducalon, Enaros, Baron Kaanuub, Ridondo]. Wintering in Kamula, Kull notices a magical fresco on the wall of his villa that depicts a land of eternal spring in which a chasm separates two yearning lovers. Kull enters the picture and uses his axe to fell a tree across the gulf, uniting the sweethearts (46-57) [Kull, Ridondo, Tu].
SYNOPSIS:
In one war with Commoria, Kull is critically wounded. Lying in his palace chamber, he is visited by his old foe Death - here assuming the form of a seductive woman who woos him with kisses and warm flesh, But Kull resists, saying he has more mighty deeds to perform before he is worthy of her eternal attentions. He is persuasive - Lady Death relents, and he recovers [Kull, Death, Brule, Tu, Count Murom Bora Ballin, Ridondo].
