Who or what are the big "trump cards" in Marvel Chronology building?

Way back when, i think when George O Murray Ward and others were figuring out the timeline for the first three years of the FF, someone came to the conclusion that Johnny probably missed his graduation ceremony during 35-41.

I'm working on a golden age DC chronology and wondering how people make a spreadsheet showing various books and lines between them to show character movements between the books. I've seen them around, but none come to mind and wondering how to make them.
