random CONAN bits

Post by Col_Fury »

Conan made a few cameo appearances in random Marvel books. Here are the ones I know about, if only to get them all in one place so we can reference them as needed.

Shadz pointed these out:

M/SAGA 1
-M/SAGA 1 (2:3) is a generic shot of Atlantis sinking into the ocean. No characters appear.
-M/SAGA 1 (2:4) is a shot of Conan and Red Sonja (bikini-clad, so after COB 24) facing off against a wizard’s shadow (looks like Kulan Gath’s silhouette to me; tall hat & robes).

As far as I can see, there hasn’t been a published adventure where Conan AND Red Sonja fight Kulan Gath together. So where would this go?

This probably isn’t between COB 15 & COB 253; Gath vaguely recalled fighting Conan 10 years earlier in COB 253. And then he dies in COB 260. He’s resurrected in CO:F&F 1-3, and then Conan chops his head off. At least everyone recognizes everyone in this one, and Conan says he’s seen Kulan Gath die twice (with reminder flashbacks to COB 15 & COB 260).

M/TU 79 mentions that Red Sonja killed Kulan Gath once by cutting out his heart, so they’ve met at least once.

I’d say to place this at least after COB 260, which would also likely mean after COB 275. Also, probably after CO:F&F 1-3, given the references there. Of course, we don’t know if Kulan Gath “dies” in this untold tale from M/SAGA 1, but still. I see some online references that CO:F&F 1-3 is after COB 275, so that’s nice.

I’m the least sure about this placement, so I’m sure we’re going to move it at some point.

DSSS 11/2
There’s a LOT missing in the MCP from this story. Currently the only character listed is Merlin in a -FB, not even Doctor Strange who’s reading the book to experience the -FB. Having said that I’m just going to focus on Conan characters for now and we can deal with the rest later.

DSSS 11/2 (2:3)-FB is King Kull fighting Thulsa Doom before killing him. Kull killed him in M/PRV 19, so during that issue.
DSSS 11/2 (3:2)-FB is Conan and Red Sonja preparing to fight Morophla and Uathacht. The only spot I’m seeing for this particular shot is between pages 12-13 of COB 43.

P@ 2/4
Uatu, Grog, Set and Seth are already in the MCP.
-from the Punisher Index
Conan, Conn, Ferdrugo, Thoth-Amon, Duke Villagro all appear in fb.
Punisher Index wrote:FLASHBACKS:
Thoth-Amon and Villagro scheme to use the Cobra Crown to compel Zingara’s king Ferdrugo to install Villagro as the new king, but Thoth-Amon betrays Villagro and makes himself king. Conan arrives and warns the Zingarans of the magic at work, and Thoth-Amon kills Villagro, which unfortunately burns out the crown’s power (SAVSCO 41-43). Thoth-Amon and his Serpent-Men war with Conan and his son Conn for decades (COK 1-19 & KCO 20-55). Seth passes himself off as the personification of Set to a pair of priests, angering Set.
The Index says these are reminder flashbacks (except for that last bit with Seth & Set), but there may be some new material to place. Whenever I get around to reading SAVSCO 41-43 & KCO 1-19 & COK 20-55 I’ll see what there is, I guess.

wolframbane pointed this one out:

FF 405
-Conan is pulled into the present from the events of COB 13, while fighting Omm. Easy!

And these are already in the MCP, but could use some context:

SJNS
-Conan battles a wanderer in the snow in front of a burning building.
-technically, this would be a flash-forward within a flashback, as the villain Ombu-Doksi was in pre-Hyborian Age Atlantis in the previous panel weaving a tapestry of things that all came true, then in the following panel she’s dancing while Atlantis sinks into the ocean. Still, it takes place before the “now” portion of the story and like the narration says, it came true. So whatever.

TCORPS 3
-“a battle-stained barbarian” Conan is confronted by an astronaut. He’s in a forest surrounded by dead bodies.

Both of these could go pretty much anywhere in Conan’s pre-king chronology. The Thor Index says Conan's next appearance after TCORPS 3 is SAVSCO 128, so there's that.

Did I miss anything?

I may be wrong, but I believe that Red Sonja was never actually depicted battling Kulan Gath during the Hyborian Age. Twice during the modern era yes, both no direct Hyborian appearance other than Marvel Saga #1.

Just as an aside, Sonja and Osin, a Conanesque character, along with others, battle Kulan Gath in Dynamite's Red Sonja 12-18 (2007). Sonja is clad in her bikini armor, and she has a vague feeling that she had known of Kulan Gath, possibly in a dream. I know Dynamite isn't Marvel, but Dynamite's Red Sonja 1-34 are very similar to Marvel's take on the character. They even have stories where she is wearing her other Marvel outfits. Dynamite's issue 35 on feature a different version of the character.
Out in the Land Down-Under, beneath a rocky outcrop, deep within the back paddock, dwells the Stray Lamb.

M/TU 79 has a reference to Red Sonja cutting out Kulan Gath’s heart at some point. Roy’s chronology in CONAN SAGA 96 says this likely happened before her first appearance in COB, meaning Sonja met Kulan Gath before Conan did. This hasn’t been shown on-panel anywhere, but there it is.

Also, Kulan Gath’s spirit was in his necklace found in M/TU 79, and Sonja’s spirit was in her sword in M/TU 79, which was displayed along with Kulan Gath’s necklace. Maybe I’m reading too much into it, but does that mean the items were found together, and that they died at the same time?

SM/RS 1-5 Sonja doesn’t remember meeting Spider-Man, but Spider-Man remembers meeting Sonja. At the end, Sonja returns to her own time, so she was pulled from the past before she died. She’s in her chainmail bikini, so likely sometime before M/SSPEC 9/2. In SM/RS 2, Sonja says she’s seen the death of gods, ridden on winged beasts and destroyed armies, so probably not before her first published appearance. When she returns in SM/RS 5, she materializes on an altar of Kulan Gath, so probably in Stygia?

RS 1 starts with Sonja in Argos, which borders Stygia. In the following issues she heads north to Zingara. In RS 5 she’s back in Argos. She becomes a general in RS 8, and flies winged creatures in RS 10-11. She’s still in Argos in RS 14, but leaves for Aquilonia where she arrives in RS 15. Aquilonia is north of Argos, Stygia is south of Argos. She’s in Shem in COB 115, which borders Stygia. In M/SSPEC 9/2 she returns to Hyrkania, which is way east. It looks like after COB 115 is the best bet.
