DARING MYSTERY COMICS #1 (Jan 1940)
Text Story:
By Ray Gill
APPEARANCES:
Horses, inhabitants of Gold Creek, Mr. Hastings, Hank Walls, Spud Clark, Wade Duncan, Mrs. Duncan, Chelsa City radio operators
SYNOPSIS:
The mining town of Gold Creek is wiped out by a stampede of horses. The few survivors, led by Wade Duncan, think it unnatural that the horses would have demolished the buildings rather than just run through the open streets. Chasing down the herd, they discover that each horse has a piece of metal surgically implanted behind an ear. They reason that the horses were being controlled by radio, and the only people who would want to destroy Gold Creek are from Chelsa City, who could then move in and take over the mining operation. The men find those responsible in a radio station in Chelsa City.
NOTE:
At first I thought this story was set in the Old West, but the presence of a radio station places it much later.
DARING MYSTERY COMICS #2 (Feb 1940)
Text Story:
By Russell A. Bankson
APPEARANCES:
Ozias Wilkins, Mattie Wilkins, Silas Potter, robbers
SYNOPSIS:
Ozias Wilkins walks into Silvertown, debating whether to buy more dynamite for his mine or grub for himself and the missus. His wife, Mattie, has threatened to leave him if he comes back without food. While in town, he hears that two bank robbers have gotten away after robbing the bank, and there’s a $10,000 reward to whoever captures them. Walking back home with a box of dynamite, Ozias sees two men’s footprints in the trail to his cabin. Worried for his wife’s safety, he runs the rest of the way home, only to see the bank robbers walk out of his mine with guns drawn. Ozias threatens to drop the box of dynamite if the robbers try anything, claiming he’s got nothing to live for anyway, since his wife is about to leave him for coming home with a box of dynamite rather than food. The robbers drop their guns and allow Mattie to tie them up securely. Ozias then opens the box to reveal that it’s really full of food, rather than dynamite. He tells Mattie that with the reward money, though, he can buy lots of dynamite and hopefully find that silver vein he’s been looking for over the last twenty years.
