USA COMICS #5 (Summer 1942)
By Ernie Hart

APPEARANCES:

SYNOPSIS:
The leaders of the Axis powers are getting together for a strategy meeting, and the Victory Boys hear about it. They give those bums a hard time and run off back into the Black Forest.

NOTE:
According to the forward in this Masterworks volume, the Victory Boys also appeared in Comedy Comics #10, and that issue reveals their back story (they’re a group of orphans whose various parents were killed by the Nazis). From what I can see, Comedy Comics #10 hit stands on March 25, 1942 and USA Comics #5 came out on August 15, 1942. They’ll appear again in ALLWS:BH where they all die.

5th Story:
By ???

This Blue Blade story is already in the MCP. The TWELVE series retconned the Blue Blade into an actor, which means this adventure is likely just a serial picture (or something). That makes a lot more sense than a guy with a cape and no shirt riding his horse around the country fighting spies. Either way, this would still be an appearance for him (filmed or not).

NOTE:
Followed by “Dead Man’s Warning” text story.

6th Story:
By Melville Henry & Jack Alderman

APPEARANCES:
Roko the Amazing (Lon Craig, art student), Menalaos, art teacher & students, McClure & his saboteur, police, bystanders

SYNOPSIS:
Art student Lon Craig meets the spirit of Menalaos who grants his super abilities when Lon says the magic word “Illium.” He uses his new powers to stop some rich jerk from sabotaging buildings so he can buy up cheap property. Also, Lon thinks it’s just groovy that he can be like Captain America now.

7th Story:
By Ed Winiarsky

APPEARANCES:
Gypo the Gypsy Giant (& his dragon Fido & his wife), Bobby & his mother

SYNOPSIS:
Gypo tries to scare a little boy (Bobby), but he’s terrible at scaring children. Gypo introduces Bobby to his pet dragon and his harpy wife.

NOTE:
Bobby’s mom seems REALLY old to have an eight-or-so year old son.

8th Story:
By ???

APPEARANCES:
Sgt. Jeff Dix (and his family), “Fish Face” Friday (Dix’s pal), other soldiers, Japanese soldiers

SYNOPSIS:
Sgt. Dix is sent to Panama where he beats up a bunch of Japanese soldiers.

NOTE:
Dix got a promotion since last issue. He’s called both Corporal and Sergeant through this story, so it must have been a recent change.

9th Story:
By Lou Paige

“Patent Pending” comedy gag page. No named characters, but I’m pretty sure the strip appears in other books.

10th Story:
By Vince Alascia

APPEARANCES:
American Avenger (Don Caldwell, “el Gaucho, also in fb), Carlos Ramirez (Don’s friend, in fb), Nazis, bystanders

FLASHBACK:
Don Caldwell goes to university in South America where he falls in love with the culture. Also, he becomes the American Avenger, patterned after el Gaucho, a local folk hero.
SYNOPSIS:
The American Avenger stops some Nazis in South America, then follows them back to New York to stop them from helping fifth columnists there.

APPEARANCES:

SYNOPSIS:
Jeep Jones decides to join the Army because he thinks it’ll be fun. He’s an idiot and is thrown in the brig.

NOTE:
It’s a humor strip, and it’s silly.

He gets a Nazi prisoner ready for an exchange, but the Nazis have tricked him; it’s a trap! In prison, Captain Daring finds Col. Welling and they escape, helped by Captain Daring’s Sky-Sharks (who disobeyed orders to fly by and help). Captain Daring, having met the British spy while in prison, learns the guy was only doing it because his family was captured by the Nazis. When he learned they died months ago in a concentration camp he switched sides again. Valerie Welling is very willing to thank Captain Daring when he returns. *wink wink*

I already broke down the Victory Boys story in Comedy Comics #10: http://www.chronologyproject.com/phpbb2 ... 757#p52757. The boys (except for Victor) were given full names in the Marvel Atlas, so that's how I listed them there. Notice also that it's not the 6th story in #10, but rather the 15th (or the 14th, if you don't count the text story).

Thanks for doing these books Col.!
I'm doing similar work over on the Unofficial Guide to the DC Universe more or less chronologically (just got out of WWII) and i can understand how much dreck you have to read through to get to the good stuff! If i have to read another story with the Three Dimwits in it, i think i'll puke!! But it's also fun to see elements that move forward into the various Universes found in the older stories!

Keep up the good work!

The retcon in The TWELVE wasn't quite that drastic. It just established that the Blue Blade's motivation for being a super-hero was to become rich and famous, and hopefully become an actor. Ironically, it did not work (during WWII, that is), although the Blue Blade did get to do USO shows. So the story here did happen more or less as presented.

Oh, I forgot to ask earlier, why no chronologies listed for the following characters?

Gypo the Gypsy Giant
Fish Face Friday
Carlos Ramirez
Jeep Jones
Valerie Welling
Marshall von Hapz
Disk-Eyes the Detective
Spider McStrangle

Ah! Neat. :)

The recent Index for Captain America (which covered all the Golden Age Cap books; anyone interested should check it out!) counted the various Secret Stamp pages as one block of stories, instead of individual stories for each page. I have a feeling the MCP will follow suit for the Otto pages, the Daffy & Duffy pages and the Wheezy & Breezy pages in Comedy Comics, but I could be wrong.

Which one's the text story in Comedy Comics #10, by the way? Sandy Skinose?

Thanks! I'm having a blast doing these, and I do enjoy reading pretty much most of them. Some... aren't that great, though.

Yeah, good point. But boy, what a terrible idea on how to get famous. On the other hand, it kind of worked in the real world for the Naked Cowboy I guess.

Some are incredibly silly, like the last story in Comedy Comics #10. Some are characters that only appear once (that aren't the main characters). I doubt we'll ever see von Hapz or Valerie Welling again, for example, but if we do we can always go back and add them (kind of like how we skipped Corky Grogan originally in DARMC 2, but then he appeared again in MYSC 1/3).

Thanks, everybody! :D

Yep, Sandy Skinose is the text story.

I haven't read any of the Secret Stamp stories, so I can't say whether or not they're analogous to Otto, Daffy/Duffy, and Wheezy/Breezy. However, I can say that it's just plain incorrect to list all the Otto, or Daffy/Duffy, or Wheezy/Breezy stories as one. Each of the Otto pages, for example, are all obviously distinct stories. There is no good reason to lump them all together as one story, any more than there would be to say that the various Cap stories in an issue of Captain America Comics should be lumped together as a single story (I'm obviously not referring to cases where you have a single story broken up into separate "chapters" like in Fantastic Four #1).

Regarding the lack of chronology listings, aren't some of the characters that you did give listings for single-appearance characters? And why should that matter, anyway? You don't have to scroll very far down the "A" MCP page to start seeing lots of single-appearance characters listed (Abarac, Jack Abbott, Mr. Abbott, Mrs. Abbott, Ambrose A. Abernathy, Ann Abernathy...). And since the default position is to assume that characters in Timely/Atlas comics are 616 unless they can't be, I would think the humor characters should be included unless the silliness is just too extreme (that's why I listed Otto, Daffy/Duffy, and Breezy/Wheezy as 616, since they're silly but not too silly for a 616 continuity that includes Howard the Duck and Millie the Model). There are plenty of humor characters that are 616 (e.g., Nellie the Nurse, Cindy Smith, Margie), after all, and Archie the Gruesome from Comedy Comics #10 is a pure silly character, but that didn't stop him from being included in the Crazy Sues a few years ago. I only said I thought the last story in Comedy Comics #10 wasn't 616 because the silliness was extreme, with the character having massive superpowers and constantly setting all sorts of baseball records in ways inconsistent with how baseball is portrayed later on.

The Disk-Eyes the Detective story is pretty silly as well. McStrangle robs a bank, but when the money's returned the bank manager doesn't want it back because then the books won't balance. And the only reason the manager was upset in the first place was because McStrangle took an extra two cents than he was told would be stolen; he was happy that McStrangle was going to steal ten thousand dollars. It looks great, though! (but I'm biased. I like Basil Wolverton)

As for one-off characters (like the willing Valerie Welling) it's more of a judgement call (the MCP doesn't list every single character that ever appeared). Are they likely to show up again? Are they family to the main character? How important are they to the story? Are they a real-world person (which usually goes back to will they appear again)? etc. But again, that's why we keep track. If we skip them for now and they pop up again later we can always add them in the future.

Good point on the one-page blocks of stories. Secret Stamp was usually (from what I've seen) continued stories presented as different chapters. Daffy/Duffy looks like they're different stories/adventures across the different pages (like Cap has different stories, not continued adventures, in most of his comics like you point out).

Thanks!

Hey Fury, Even though the MCP doesn't list the text story, shouldn't it be numbered as a story as to not confuse the positioning in case at some future date they could be included?

Re: USA Comics #5-8

The recent Captain America Index always ran the text story last, no matter where it was in the issue, and didn't include them in the story numbering. Since the MCP is largely based on the various Index series', we don't include the text stories in the numbering either.

I forget which topic I mentioned it in, but I'm pretty sure that whenever the MCP gets around to looking at text stories (which isn't a priority at the moment. There's PLENTY of other stuff we want to get to first), they'll likely be listed something like

USAC 3/TEXT
or
USAC 3/T

or something like that. That way we wouldn't have to go through everything again and renumber stuff. I mean, all the GA Cap stuff was included here from the Index; how would we go back and verify which story number it would be?

So, if someone were to go through and break down appearances for text stories from otherwise already analyzed issues, would that be welcome? And just use /TEXT rather than a number? While a lot of them are one-offs, some of the text stories include characters that show up again elsewhere (e.g., Cap, Namor, Terry Vance, various historical figures).
