M/PRM 41 & Seeker 3000 #1-4

Post by Col_Fury »

MARVEL PREMIERE #41 (April 1978)
By Doug Moench & Tom Sutton

APPEARANCES:
Lt. Valida Payton, Dr. John Running Bear, Ens. Ben Payton, Capt. Jordan Shaw (also in fb), Cmdr. Jason (in fb), Mrs. Shaw (in fb), Hubert, Phaedra (also in fb), the Six (inc Overlord), Seeker 3000 crew

FLASHBACKS:
Phaedra is discovered to have telepathic abilities at a young age (years ago). Jason, having created the Seeker 3000 ship recruits Jordan Shaw to be its captain. Jason tells Shaw the sun will go nova in nine months, and that he’s created the Seeker 3000 to finally find the secret of faster than light travel. However, everyone on Earth will die when the sun dies; Jason and the Six (high ranking government officials) have decided to keep this a secret to avoid panic. Jason blackmails Shaw to keep quiet with the promise that his wife will be allowed to come with. Only Jason, the Six and the Seeker 3000 crew will survive Earth’s destruction. Frozen cells will be cloned to populate whatever new home they find (nine months ago).
SYNOPSIS:
Capt. Jordan Shaw stages a rebellion against the Six, steals the Seeker 3000 (along with its willing crew), reveals he knows his wife has already been killed by the Six (and the Six plan to abandon Cmdr. Jason), jettisons the frozen cells of people selected by the Six and picks up different frozen cells selected by Hubert (a sentient computer program) to repopulate the human race with. As the solar system’s military chases the Seeker 3000, the Six tells Jason that the Seeker 3000 is heading toward him; he reveals he plans to stop the Seeker 3000 and abandon the Six. Jason attacks but they easily evade him. The Seeker 3000 breaks out of the solar system and achieves warp speed as the sun explodes. Capt. Shaw learns that Hubert has been replaced with a facsimile of Jason’s personality but he doesn’t care; they survived and Jason didn’t.

SEEKER 3000 #1 (June 1998)
By Dan Abnett, Ian Edginton & Andrew Currie

APPEARANCES:
Jericho Shaw (also in fb), Martika (also in fb), Capt. Jordan Shaw (in fb), Carter Shaw (also in fb), Dermot, Lt. Valida Payton (also in fb), Censys/”Hubert” (also in fb), Dr. John Running Bear (in fb), Phaedra (also in fb), Ben Payton, Dr. Kristian Delano, Vaun Lysander, Cyrene, La Paz, Seeker 3000 crew, Hkkkt

FLASHBACK:
Recap of M/PRM 41. THEN! Capt. Shaw and Lt. Payton have a child (Carter Shaw) together. Capt. Shaw orders more telepaths to be cloned. “Jason” (the ship’s sentient computer) stages a revolt against Shaw, but it’s eventually tamped down by Dr. John Running Bear. More clones were sanctioned to bolster the Seeker 3000’s ranks, Shaw’s son Jericho was one of them. The telepaths secluded themselves into a section of the ship (over the last 25 years). On a scouting mission, Capt. Shaw dies; his son Jericho survives, but the telepath with them is injured (Martika). VERY SUSPICIOUS.
SYNOPSIS:
A giant object in space destroys a probe sent out by Seeker 3000. Carter Shaw teaches a class of children, but is interrupted by his mother Valida, who tells him his father has died. With Capt. Shaw dead, the Seeker 3000 crew holds a vote to see who the new captain will be; it’s Jericho (the other choice was Carter). They warp jump to a new sector of space and begin looking for a world to populate. Carter’s ship is attacked by a large object in space while the telepaths warn the new captain about an evil presence in this sector.

NOTE:
Fun bit: there’s an ad for the movie “Shooting Fish” in this issue. I managed a movie store for YEARS (anyone remember Suncoast?) and this movie, for as long as I can remember, was always in the discount bin. As it turns out, this movie was released in the States in May 1998, the same month and year I started at Suncoast. I’ll need to track this down and watch it now.
