Red Raven Comics #1

Post by Col_Fury »

This started as me wanting to see what was missing from Red Raven Comics #1, so I poked around the interwebs to see what I could find. This isn’t an analysis, exactly, just what I could figure out from different resources. After I got most of this together I found out that the complete Red Raven Comics #1 was reprinted in the Marvel Firsts: WWII Super Heroes collection, which I now have on order. I’ll be using this to see how reliable the internet can be; when the book arrives (and when I find the time) I plan to come back to this to see what shakes out.

RED RAVEN COMICS #1 (August 1940)
By Joe Simon & Louis Cazeneuve

This Red Raven story is already in the MCP. It seems to be complete. Also, it was reprinted in Golden Age of Marvel vol. 2 TPB.

2nd Story:
By Dick Briefer

Human Top defeats Vanderveer (a corrupt banker). Prof. Raymore gave Bruce his powers; Martha is the professor's daughter

NOTE:
Apparently, Human Top appears again in Tough Kid Squad Comics #1.

3rd Story:
By Jack Kirby

This Mercury story is already in the MCP, and seems to be complete. This was reprinted in at least Marvel Super-Heroes #14.

NOTE:
Followed by “the Death Switch” text story.

4th Story:
By Jack Kirby

In the year 2150, Comet Pierce is an adventure-seeking fella. He enters a space race to Jupiter and races against Avis Jort, who strands Pierce on an asteroid. Queen Laraina saves Comet Pierce. Pierce offers to help her fight to win her country’s freedom.

5th Story:
By ???

Officer O’Krime. Sound familiar? I don’t know if this is a different strip than was seen in DARMC 7/4, or if that’s a reprint of this.

6th Story:
By ???

Magar the Mystic has an Egyptian background of some kind, and hasn’t been active on Earth for a long time. I see the MCP already has King Solomon listed for this story, and I’m seeing mention of Thomas Edison appearing here also. And a scan shows me that Napoleon also appears. Magar the Mystic is “the Re-Creator of Souls,” so these seem to be historic figures pulled in from the afterlife. Maybe others appear as well?

7th Story:
By ???

This Eternal Brain story is already in the MCP, and it seems to be complete. Charles Lindbergh is mentioned, but 50 years in the past (so, in theory, no, he doesn’t appear). Prof. Carmody (and others) appears again in Marvel: the Lost Generation, which confirms this story takes place in the 1980s (as the story says: 50 years after the 1930s). Thanks, Roger Stern!

So, as far as I can tell, in theory:

BONAPARTE, NAPOLEON
RRAVENC 1/6

EDISON, THOMAS
RRAVENC 1/6

HUMAN TOP/BRUCE BRAVELLE
RRAVENC 1/2

KING SOLOMON
BTALES 4/4
M/PRV 19/2-FB
**{RRAVENC 1/6} (move from here)
BP@ 1
*{RRAVENC 1/6} (move to here)

MAGAR
RRAVENC 1/6

EARTH-40800

AVIS JORT | EARTH-40800
RRAVENC 1/4

COMET PIERCE | EARTH-40800
RRAVENC 1/4

QUEEN LARAINA | EARTH-40800
RRAVENC 1/4

And we’ll see what happens!

Yep, also Mata Hari, Harry Houdini, and the Duke of Wellington: http://cmro.travis-starnes.com/detail.p ... complete=1

Thanks!

As it turns out, that collection only has the Mercury story from RRAVENC. Rats. However, I was able to reads RRAVENC and verify a few things.

Some other Eternals appear in RRAVENC 1/3, but none have been confirmed as previously seen Eternals that I’m aware of. “Aeolus,” “Huntress Diana” and “Apollo” for those keeping track. Other than that, this story looks complete in the MCP to me.

There are some other stories in here that aren’t in other Golden Age Masterworks, though, so we might as well go through those:

MYSTIC COMICS #5 (March 1941)
By George Mandel

APPEARANCES:
Black Marvel (Dan Lyons, also in fb), gangsters (Al, Frani, Steve, Vannie named), Man-To (Black Feet chief, in fb), Running Elk (Black Feet medicine man, in fb), Black Feet (in fb, Jund named), police, bystanders (Mickey named)

FLASHBACK:
Man-To, chief of the Black Feet, is dying and wants to see who the champion of the nation will be before he goes. When all challengers fail the trials, Dan Lyons arrives. His father lived with the Black Feet for years, and he’s allowed to compete. He passes all the trials and is given the name “the Black Marvel.”
SYNOPSIS:
Gangsters sabotage an electric plant, plunging the city into darkness and chaos. The Black Marvel arrives and beats information out of the goons; the real job is at the armory and the city-wide blackout was a cover. The Black Marvel stops them from robbing the armory and learns crooks are joining up to form super gangs. The last gangster dies before he can learn to the name of who’s going to be in charge of the mega gang, though.

4th Story:
By Phil Sturm & Syd Shores

APPEARANCES:
Dr. John Storm, Rex (his dog), an ape, the Terror, Greco & his henchmen

SYNOPSIS:
Dr. John Storm is doing science experiments in his home when he’s suddenly attacked by an ape. His dog transforms and kills the ape, but dies from the strain. Dr. Storm experiments on his dog and isolates a serum that grants superhuman strength. Meanwhile, a guy is hit by lightning and gets amnesia. He stumbles to Dr. Storm’s house, who then experiments on the guy to give him super strength. Suddenly, criminals attack the doctor, demanding they do science for them. The guy wakes up and kills the criminals (his strength is activated by anger, and he gains a skeletal face in his transformation), but the doctor dies, naming him the Terror. The Terror swears to fight against crime and evil.

7th Story:
By Bob Davis

APPEARANCES:
Blazing Skull (Mark Todd), Adolf Hitler, Powell (Todd’s contact), Metzer (German scientist), various soldiers, Nazi sailors & soldiers, French Resistance, scientists, bystanders

SYNOPSIS:
Nazi forces are conquering nations at an alarming rate and various militaries and scientists don’t know what to do. One day, Mark Todd is on a cruise when the civilian boat is attacked by a Nazi submarine. Mark Todd jumps overboard and divert the torpedo. Two more are fired, so Mark transforms into the Blazing Skull and diverts them as well. As Mark's friends search for him on the boat, the Blazing Skull later meets with the French Resistance in the ocean. He travels across Europe to meet his contact to receive his next assignment: find the German scientist Metzer, who has been manufacturing an enervating gas for the Nazis. The Blazing Skull destroys the lab but is captured. As he’s tortured, Hitler arrives to gloat, but the Blazing Skull gives him a scolding. Hitler runs off in tears. That night the Blazing Skull escapes.

NOTE:
Mark Todd spent time in the Orient, where the Skull Men taught him much of their marvelous lore. That’s all we get about his super strength and whatnot. Who cares, though? He made Hitler cry!

MYSTIC COMICS #6 (October 1941)
By Stan Lee & Jack Binder

APPEARANCES:
Destroyer (Keen Marlow) & his editor, Prof. Eric Schmidt, Nazi soldiers (von Banger named), bystanders

SYNOPSIS:
Reporter Keen Marlow is sent to a German prison to see how they treat their prisoners, but he’s arrested as a spy. In prison he meets a dying scientist (Prof. Eric Schmidt; the Nazis wanted him to experiment on prisoners to get super soldiers) who gives him a formula that grants him super strength. He stages a breakout and escapes. He becomes the Destroyer, and starts waging a one-man war against the Nazis behind enemy lines. Soon, the name Destroyer is feared by any Nazi that hears it.

NOTE:
Of course, Roy Thomas changed the Destroyer’s story in the pages of the Invaders. He later admitted regret over altering the Destroyer’s origin so much (he retconned “Keen Marlow” as an alias for Brian Falsworth).

MYSTIC COMICS #7 (December 1941)
2nd Story:
By Mike Suchorsky

This Witness story is already in the MCP.

MARVEL MYSTERY COMICS #49 (November 1943)
4th Story:
By Otto Binder

APPEARANCES:
Miss America (Madeline Joyce), James Bennett, Prof. Lawson, bystanders

APPEARANCES:
Madeline Joyce and her guardian (James Bennett, friend of her father) visit Prof. Lawson (after Madeline stops some kids from beating up a paperboy on crutches) who is conducting experiments with electricity. He claims to have gained X-ray vision and flight. Madeline decides she needs those powers to help people and sneaks into the lab. It works, but she’s knocked unconscious. Prof. Lawson finds her and thinks she’s dead, so he blows up the lab, killing himself in the process. Madeline takes the name Miss America and uses her powers to help others. The next week she hears about some shady business at a defense plant and investigates. She stops one worker from killing another, then goes after the killer… to be continued!

NOTE:
Currently, we have a break between M/MC 49-50 for Miss America. This story ends on a cliffhanger (and #50 wraps it up), so we’ll have to move at least M/MC 50 to before M/PRM 29 for her.
