AVENGERS: HEROES WELCOME DIGITAL COMIC #1 (September 2013)
By Brian Michael Bendis & Mark Brooks

APPEARANCES:
Nova (Sam Alexander, also in fb), Captain America, Luke Cage, Iron Man, She-Hulk, Thor, Wasp, M.O.D.O.K., Douglass Alligood & his students

FLASHBACK:
Nova saves someone from an apartment fire.
SYNOPSIS:
Sam’s teacher goes on a tear about how policemen and firemen are the real heroes, and that super heroes are a bunch of chumps. He assigns the class to write an essay about it. As Nova, Sam visits the Avengers and asks if they’re all really heroes, and why they aren’t curing diseases and ending wars. After a chat, they all leave to deal with M.O.D.O.K.

NOTE:
If you want the answer to Nova’s question, just go read Mark Gruenwald’s Squadron Supreme maxiseries.

Douglass Alligood is a real person; according to the credits he’s the SVP Chairman of BBDO New York Diversity Council. The guy who appears here, though, is a high school teacher in Arizona.

Published at a time when Iron Man was either in space, or wearing the black & gold armor (he’s in his AvX era red & gold armor here), so this takes place sometime in the relative past. It has to be after AvX, because that’s where this Nova made his debut, and because Wasp returns shortly after that crossover (in A4 31-34). Looking at our map, it seems like before the bulk of AvX:C is the best bet.
