Amazing High Adventure #5 and Theological Extras

Post by vanhornluke »

This finishes off the mid-80s anthology series.

AMAZING HIGH ADVENTURE #5 (Dec 1986)

1st Story:
By Mike Baron

APPEARANCES:
Maxie, Clyde Cooper, Vi, Werner Lenz, police, Bruno Lasorda, gamblers

SYNOPSIS:
FLASHBACK:
Verdun: While watching over an observation balloon, Clyde Cooper gets into a dogfight with German ace Werner Lenz. Cooper loses, taking a bullet, but he survives.
1927: Maxie and Clyde Cooper are aerial stuntmen. They both fly out to Sacramento when they hear that Clyde’s father has been killed in a car accident. When they arrive, Clyde’s sister Vi insists that their father was killed by the gangster Bruno Lasorda. When Lasorda’s thugs arrive to insist that Vi sell her father’s trucking company to them, Clyde recognizes the thug called “the Kraut” as Werner Lenz, the German ace who shot him during the war. Wanting revenge, Clyde and Maxie decide to rob Bruno’s casino in the Nevada desert. They succeed, but Bruno and Lenz and both killed in the process. They decide to pick up Vi and hide from the police.

2nd Story:
By Mike Baron

APPEARANCES:
Philistine Army, Israelite Army, Goliath, King David, Eliab, Joab, Abner, King Saul, horses

SYNOPSIS:
1000 B.C.: A retelling of David’s defeat of Goliath, sticking fairly close to the biblical account.
FLASHFORWARD:
David is now king of Israel.

NOTE:
At one point David is mistakenly said to be from the tribe of Benjamin, although in another place it correctly describes him as from the tribe of Judah. I should also note that in Goliath’s chronology below I’ve omitted Goliath’s “appearance” in Cable #96, the only thing listed in his chronology at MCP. I read through that issue and Goliath never appears. He’s mentioned offhand once, but there’s no actual flashback appearance.

3rd Story:
By Bill Mantlo

APPEARANCES:
Mahdi, British soldiers, horses, Wilberforce, Kali worshippers, Indian civilians, British colonial rulers, Yama, Ratri, Agni, Maya, Kali

SYNOPSIS:
1877: The Mahdi leads an Indian revolt against the British occupiers. Having initial success, he has three British officers offered as human sacrifices in a ceremony of worship to the gods. Yama, Ratri, Agni, Maya, and Kali appear to the Mahdi and tell him that they are not interested in overthrowing the British. The Mahdi insists that he must be given victory, so the gods give him some of their power. When another British company approaches, the Mahdi throws all caution and strategy to the wind, marching directly against the British in the confidence that he has the power of the gods. The British quickly mow down the rebels and the Mahdi discovers that the gods’ power that was given to him was merely to blind him so that the British can be the gods’ instrument of punishment for the Mahdi’s audacity to presume their will and demand their assistance.

NOTE:
Kali’s and Maya’s appearances here are already listed on their MCP chronologies, so I won’t list them below. Yama apparently has an appearance in Fearless Defenders #3, but I don’t know if that’s been analyzed and added to the site (it’s not in Yama’s MCP chronology). I haven’t read any of that series (yet), so I didn’t list it below.

4th Story:
By Ken Steacy

APPEARANCES:
Smitty, Slim Walters, Air Force personnel, Sam Crosby, Sparky Clarke, Hal

SYNOPSIS:
1955: Testing a secret new fighter/bomber combo at Edwards Air Force Base, the bomber crew is infiltrated by a commie spy. He threatens to kill the crew unless they fly to his secret base, where he’ll take possession of the plane. However, he isn’t aware that Hal is flying the tiny fighter that connects to the bomber. He hears over the radio the spy’s demands, so he docks with the bomber while in flight and climbs up the ladder to sneak aboard the bomber and knock out the spy.

STRANGE TALES #29 (Jun 1954)

1st Story:
By ?

APPEARANCES:
Verlan, Mother Grau, cats, rats, guards, townspeople

SYNOPSIS:
In the medieval French village of Pau, Verlan is the local torturer and executioner. Fearful that no one will commit a capital offense during the winter, and thus leaving him without pay, Verlan decides to falsely accuse a lonely old woman, Mother Grau, of witchcraft. He has her hauled away to jail and repeatedly places her on the rack, but she refuses to confess, adamantly denying that she is a witch. After a week, the townspeople begin to suspect that Verlan has falsely accused her, so that night he puts on a devil costume and sneaks into the jail. He confronts Mother Grau and orders her to confess to witchcraft, offended that she would publicly deny him. When she protests that this will lead to her execution, he promises to protect her. While sneaking out of the jail, a guard sees him and shouts the alarm. More guards arrive and they begin to stone him. Verlan insists he’s not the devil, but he can’t seem to remove the costume. While the guards finish stoning him, Mother Grau silently sneaks out of her jail cell and flies out of the courtyard.

2nd Story:
By ?

NOTE:
According to comics.org, this is a reprint, but they haven’t yet identified from where it’s been reprinted. It should be analyzed in whatever issue it originally appeared in, so I won’t break it down here.

3rd Story:
By ?

APPEARANCES:
Benny Troy, Bugsy, Flakey, Joey, Betty, Clem

SYNOPSIS:
When two-bit conman, mugger, and thief Benny Troy meets Betty and falls in love, he decides he’s done with penny-ante capers. He moves out west and sets up a fake uranium company and begins selling its stock, sending all the money back to Betty until he’s got enough saved up for them to marry. After three months he’s sent her $25,000, so he travels home. When he asks to see her bank book, she replies that she didn’t put the money in a bank account. Instead, she invested it in a hot uranium company out west. The shock finishes off Benny, dropping him to the floor and proving that he’s “a real dead beat.”

NOTE:
A lot of these stories are cheesy, but I have to admit I chuckled when I got to the end of this one. :-P

4th Story:
By ?

APPEARANCES:
U.S. Army, Harry, underground monsters, Robert

SYNOPSIS:
Harry is a test-pilot for the U.S. Army. They’re having him test out their new nuclear driller, which can drill through the Earth, possibly allowing for attacks from beneath on enemy forces. Because of the secret nature of the technology, Harry knows little about the machine or his mission, and he’s never met his copilot. He’s told the drill will take off and he’ll receive his orders after 24 hours, again to preserve secrecy. The craft can’t be turned around for a month and a half. He agrees and the drill is activated. He spends the next day getting to know his copilot, Robert, and finds that he likes him. However, when he checks the supplies, he realizes that there is only enough food for one person for the duration of the trip, meaning both of them will starve by the time the drill returns home. Unwilling to die over a mistake, Harry arranges for Robert to have an “accident” with a crane’s hook. However, just after the murder, his instructions are read over the speaker and he’s told that his copilot is a robot and that only the robot can turn the drill around to take it back home. Harry’s really smart, though, so they’re sure he must have figured this out when he noticed only enough food for one person.

5th Story:
By ?

APPEARANCES:
U.N. Committee on National Atrocities, Commies, political prisoners

SYNOPSIS:
The U.N. Committee on National Atrocities is holding hearings regarding allegations of atrocities in the Soviet Union. The Soviets bring in a witness, hooded to protect his identity, to defend them. However, as soon as he is seated he claims that he lied to the Soviets in order to be brought for testimony. He recounts all sorts of crimes behind the iron curtain, to the adamant denials of the Soviets. When they claim he can’t prove any of what he’s said, he removes his hood to reveal himself as a skeleton. He is himself a victim of Soviet atrocities and has returned from the dead to testify against them.

NOTE:
None of the characters in this story are named, so I have nothing to list them by and thus haven’t included them in the chronologies below.

6th Story:
By ?

APPEARANCES:
Judge Krishlal, Kordu, Ral, Nalo, Aba, Valti, Sali, Johrnu, the Hindu God of Justice (Yama)

SYNOPSIS:
Judge Krishlal hears three witnesses to the death of Kordu, who fell off a cliff. All three tell different stories, accusing different people. The judge is stumped as to what to believe, but then the ghost of Kordu himself appears and testifies, accusing his father-in-law of pushing him off the cliff. The judge is inclined to believe the ghost, but then the Hindu God of Justice appears and claims that all four witnesses, including the ghost, are liars attempting to harm their enemies through false testimony. He grabs all four, taking them away for eternal punishment.

NOTE:
The God of Punishment’s name is never given, but marvunapp identifies him as Yama, so that’s what I’m going with.

STRANGE TALES #39 (Oct 1955)

1st Story:
By ?

APPEARANCES:
Prof. Karnoff, landlady, crowds, scientists

FLASHBACK:
Prof. Karnoff proposes to his colleagues that they pool their resources and take over the world. They laugh in his face and get him fired. He then moves to a cheap boardinghouse and conducts experiments in his room. One day he manages to “uraniumize” an iron anvil, which makes the iron malleable like clay. Further, when he molds a statue of himself, he finds that whatever is done to the statue also affects him. Realizing the iron now has properties like a voodoo doll, he begins molding models of important buildings in town and then smashing them, causing the buildings to collapse.
SYNOPSIS:
Prof. Karnoff’s landlady demands that he pay his rent, which has been due for months. He promises to pay her within a week, once he controls the world. She agrees and he continues demolishing buildings with his iron. One day he returns to his room to find that it is empty. The landlady lied, telling him she’d wait a week for his rent money. Instead, she’s evicting him after having already sold everything in his room to offset the loss she’s taken on him as a tenant. The statue of Karnoff was among the things she sold and he freaks out when he realizes it’s gone, running down the street. No one ever sees him again, and the fact that the statue is thrown in the garbage indicates that he may have been killed.

NOTE:
I can’t help but be reminded of the Puppet Master’s clay. I wonder if there’s some sort of relation between the clay and the “uraniumization” process used on the iron?

2nd Story:
By ?

APPEARANCES:
Joe, Rhythm Makers orchestra, Gus, Angelo

SYNOPSIS:
The Rhythm Makers orchestra is working hard but finding it difficult to book paying gigs. One day, Joe meets Angelo, a harp player, at a bus station. He convinces his boss, Gus, to ask Angelo to join the group. Angelo agrees and he’s a hit with the public. The orchestra starts booking better gigs and the group is a success. On a flight to their next gig, Joe dreams that Angelo and his father are angels. The father explains that Angelo is a good student, and he’s spending time on Earth as part of a good will program. When Joe wakes up, Angelo tips his hat too him and Joe notices the glow of a halo from underneath the brim.

3rd Story:
By ?

APPEARANCES:
Pedestrians, alien agent from Sirius IV

SYNOPSIS:
An agent from Sirius IV has been sent to Earth to determine whether or not they are ready to join interstellar civilization. Because he resembles an ugly human, the people he has brief contact with tend to shun him. This leads him to believe that humans cannot see beyond physical appearance. When he returns to Sirius IV he plans to recommend destroying Earth so that humanity won’t cause problems with other species. On his way to his spaceship, he notices a woman about to be hit by a car. Without thinking, he rushes forward and pulls her out of the way. She thanks him and is somehow able to sense his inherent goodness and beauty. Shocked by her perceptions, the agent realizes that he was wrong: humans can indeed see beneath the surface, and he failed to realize this because he didn’t try to forge a close relationship with any of them. As he leaves for his spaceship, deciding to completely change his recommendations, he fails to notice the blind woman reach down for her cane which she dropped when he rescued her.

NOTE:
There are no named characters in this story, so there’s nothing to list in the chronologies below. I also can’t help be reminded of Alicia first meeting the Silver Surfer. Perhaps Stan remembered this story when writing that?

4th Story:
By Paul S. Newman

APPEARANCES:
Peter, Mr. Gregg, Charlie, Peter’s parents

SYNOPSIS:
Peter loves playing with his two toy ships on a pond behind his house. However, his father is too ill to work, so Peter needs to help out by having a newspaper route. He keeps losing track of time, though, so after showing up late for work once too often he is fired. Distraught, he returns home to find that one of his ships has gone missing from the pond. He can’t find it anywhere, even after dragging the pond. The next day he sees that his ship has returned, and it is loaded with black pearls. His mother is able to sell them for $5,000, which will be enough to last until his father is well enough to return to work. Returning home to tell his father the good news, his father shows them a story in the paper: an unregistered ship which looks exactly like Peter’s ship that went missing (except for life-sized) arrived in the Aru Islands and traded wire and scrap metal for black pearls, reportedly for a mission of mercy.

5th Story:
By ?

APPEARANCES:
Jack, Goliath, David, Mammoth, townspeople, woman and children

SYNOPSIS:
Mammoth is a good giant who wanders around helping people. One day he finds a woman who runs an orphanage. A flood washed away her house and all the natural supplies in the area. She has fifty-seven children she needs to house, but can’t build a new house. Mammoth promises to make her a new house, but he can’t find any resources to build one, either. Refusing to break his promise, he takes off his shoe and cuts windows and a door into it.

NOTE:
Obviously, the origin behind the old woman who lived in a shoe. The Jack here is the character from “Jack and the Beanstalk,” establishing that a version of that story takes place in 616.

6th Story:
By ?

APPEARANCES:
Burt Lloyd, Edmund Carter, Jerry, Fred Burgess, Laura Beatty, George Reynolds, Morton, Edith Rogers

SYNOPSIS:
Burt Lloyd decides to use a failed rocket experiment built by the inventor Edmund Carter for an episode of his television show “The Joke Is On You!” He places an ad in the paper asking for five volunteers to be passengers on the first rocket trip to Venus. The whole thing will be filmed and their disappointment at having been tricked will be broadcast to the viewers. They quickly get five volunteers, so Carter takes them to the rocket and fires it up. After a few minutes, he turns everything off and Lloyd bursts out of a hidden compartment to get the passengers’ reactions. The joke is on him, though, since the rocket has in fact traveled to Venus and the passengers are all Venusians who wanted to return home.

NOTE:
There have been a lot of stories about Venus or Venusians over the decades, and I’m not familiar with all of them, so I can’t say for sure that this is consistent with what we know about the 616 Venus, but I’m assuming it is.

BIBLE TALES FOR YOUNG FOLK #1 (Aug 1953)

1st Story:
By ?

APPEARANCES:
Yahweh, fish, birds, various land animals, Adam, Eve, serpent

SYNOPSIS:
A retelling of the first three chapters of Genesis.

NOTE:
I’m not sure how this story fits into 616 continuity, if it does. The reason is that the creation of humanity is described in Journey into Mystery #103’s “Tales of Asgard,” and probably there have been other accounts as well. Also, I’m not sure how to treat Yahweh as a 616 character. He has no handbook entry (probably to avoid offending Jewish and Christian readers) to help clarify things. Is he supposed to be just another god (small “g”) like Odin and Zeus? Or is he the actual creator of all (the “One Above All,” the creator of everything, not the celestial)? And is “Allah” just another name for the same being, or are Yahweh and Allah distinct beings? I’m simply going to produce a “Yahweh” chronology, but depending on the answers to the above questions, it might need to be merged with chronologies for the One Above All and Allah. Finally, I’m not sure how to treat the serpent. Christian tradition identifies the serpent with Satan, but some Jews disagree with that. And even if the serpent is Satan in 616 continuity, Satan is a 616 continuity nightmare, since lots of different characters have claimed to be Satan. Is this the genuine Satan or an imposter? If the latter, who? If the former, I don’t know how to construct a chronology for him, since there are so many “Satan” appearances that have never had any official clarification of who it is. For simplicity, I’m simply going to list the character as “The Serpent,” and if it’s determined that it’s the genuine Satan, and someone wants to construct a chronology for Satan, then this can be added to that chronology.

2nd Story:
By ?

NOTE:
This story was already analyzed at MCP and listed in Noah’s chronology. However, there is no Yahweh chronology at MCP, so I’ll list it there. Also, I noticed that the other characters that appear in the story, like Noah’s sons, don’t have chronologies. Maybe this is because they weren’t named in this story (even though the Bible names them as Shem, Ham, and Japheth)?

3rd Story:
By ?

APPEARANCES:
Samuel, Bethlehem elders, Eliab, Yahweh, Jesse, Jesse’s other sons (unnamed in this story), David, King Saul, evil spirit

SYNOPSIS:
A retelling of David’s anointing by the prophet Samuel as the next king of Israel, and his initial meeting with King Saul.

4th Story:
By ?

APPEARANCES:
Gabriel, Mary, Jewish townspeople, Joseph of Nazareth, donkey, shepherds, angels, Jesus of Nazareth, Magi, Herod the Great, camels, Jewish soldiers

SYNOPSIS:
A mixture of the stories of Jesus’ birth and early childhood found in the gospels of Matthew and Luke.

NOTE:
Another complication is how to craft Jesus’ chronology. I think it should be uncontroversial to list him as “Jesus of Nazareth” rather than “Jesus Christ,” since “Christ” is a title rather than name (although over time it came to function as a name). However, according to Christian belief, Jesus is the second person of the Trinity (the Son). According to Trinitarianism, Yahweh is a tripersonal being, and Jesus is the second of those persons. While Jesus could be distinguished from the Father, both the Father and the Son are Yahweh. So, a Trinitarian might want to insist that Jesus’ chronology should actually be a subset of Yahweh’s chronology. I won’t do that here just for simplicity, but I can see the argument for doing so.

5th Story:
By ?

APPEARANCES:
Mary, Jesus of Nazareth, Jesus’ disciples, Jewish crowds, various people healed by Jesus, Martha, Lazarus

SYNOPSIS:
A retelling of various miracle accounts in the gospels.

6th Story:
By ?

APPEARANCES:
Jesus of Nazareth, Jesus’ disciples, Peter, James, John, Moses, Elijah, Yahweh

SYNOPSIS:
A retelling of several stories in the gospels.

NOTE:
It’s not easy to assign this a place in the chronologies alongside the previous story, since it’s controversial how to construct a chronological harmonization of the gospels. Each gospel has its own emphasis, and the gospel authors will often group topically-related stories together rather than following strict chronology. I’m not going to wade into that, and will simply place the incidents in this story before the recounting of the raising of Lazarus in the previous story.

BIBLE TALES FOR YOUNG FOLK #2 (Oct 1953)

1st Story:
By ?

APPEARANCES:
Israelites, Philistines, Manoah, Yahweh, Samson, lion, Delilah

SYNOPSIS:
A retelling of the biblical story of Samson.

2nd Story:
By ?

APPEARANCES:
Humanity, Yahweh

SYNOPSIS:
A retelling of the story of the Tower of Babel from the book of Genesis.

3rd Story:
By ?

APPEARANCES:
Jesus of Nazareth, people praying, soldiers

SYNOPSIS:
A one-page retelling of Jesus teaching.

4th Story:
By ?

APPEARANCES:
Joseph, Jacob, Joseph’s brothers, sheep, traders, camel, Potiphar, Potiphar’s wife, prisoners, Pharaoh, Simeon, Benjamin, Judah

SYNOPSIS:
A retelling of the story of Joseph from the book of Genesis.

NOTE:
Only three of Joseph’s brothers are named. The other brothers are named in the Bible, but since they aren’t given names here, I won’t assume that the 616 versions of Joseph’s brothers all have the same names as in the Bible. Also, Potiphar’s wife has no name in the Bible or here, but since she’s such a famous figure under the label “Potiphar’s Wife,” I’ll list her as that. Finally, the Pharaoh is unnamed both here and in the Bible. There’s a lot of controversy among Old Testament scholars as to which of the pharaohs would be the one in the Joseph story, so I won’t guess and will leave him unlisted.

5th Story:
By ?

APPEARANCES:
Herod Antipas, spies, Jesus of Nazareth, Jewish townspeople, John the Baptist, Holy Spirit, Yahweh

SYNOPSIS:
A story synthesizing several of the stories of John the Baptist in the gospels.

NOTE:
As with my note about Jesus above, I also have to point out that the Holy Spirit presents complications, too. Christians hold that Yahweh is tri-personal, with the Holy Spirit being the third of those persons. A case could thus be made that any appearance of the Holy Spirit should be included in the chronology for Yahweh. For simplicity’s sake, I’m listing any appearances of God the Father under Yahweh and the Holy Spirit will have his own chronology below, but I recognize that this is controversial.

6th Story:
By ?

APPEARANCES:
Jesus of Nazareth

SYNOPSIS:
A brief vignette of a few of Jesus’ teachings.

7th Story:
By ?

APPEARANCES:
Jesus of Nazareth, crowds, conspirators, Pharisees, woman caught in adultery

SYNOPSIS:
A retelling of the pericopae adulterae in John’s gospel.

NOTE:
The woman caught in adultery is never named, here or in John. However, she has become famous under that label, so that’s how I will list her.

8th Story:
By ?

APPEARANCES:
Samuel, David, Jesus of Nazareth

SYNOPSIS:
A retelling of the parable of the prodigal son.

9th Story:
By ?

APPEARANCES:
Jotham, Abimelech, supporters of Abimelech

SYNOPSIS:
A passage from the book of Judges.

BIBLE TALES FOR YOUNG FOLKS #3 (Dec 1953)

1st Story:
By ?

APPEARANCES:
Abram/Abraham, Yahweh, Sarah, Lot, servants, Isaac, cattle, goat, angel, ram

SYNOPSIS:
A retelling of part of the Abraham story from the book of Genesis.

2nd Story:
By ?

APPEARANCES:
Pharaoh, Israelites, Egyptians, Moses, Moses’ mother, Pharaoh’s daughter, Egyptian soldiers, Zipporah, Gershom, Yahweh, sheep, Aaron, another Pharaoh, Angel of Death, donkey

SYNOPSIS:
A retelling of part of the Moses story from the book of Exodus.

NOTE:
There are a number of unnamed figures in this story, some of whom are named in the Bible or later Jewish tradition. Since I didn’t assume that the 616 versions of Joseph’s brothers all have the same names as in the Bible, I won’t do so for these figures, either. Also, I was unable to find any clarification if the Angel of Death here is Azrael or not. I’ve listed him in his own chronology, but if they’re the same character then this appearance can be added to Azrael’s chronology.

3rd Story:
By ?

APPEARANCES:
Jacob, Yahweh

SYNOPSIS:
A brief retelling of the story of Jacob’s Ladder in the book of Genesis.

4th Story:
By ?

APPEARANCES:
King Ahab, Jezebel, Yahweh, Elijah, ravens, widow and son, revelers, prophets, Obadiah, horses, priests of Baal, bulls, Israelites, angel, Elisha

SYNOPSIS:
A retelling of the life of the prophet Elijah.

NOTE:
An idol of Baal appears, but I presume that doesn’t count as an appearance of Baal himself.

5th Story:
By ?

APPEARANCES:
Jesus of Nazareth, John the Baptist, crowds, elephant, lion, bird, Satan, angels

SYNOPSIS:
A retelling of the story of Satan’s temptations to Jesus.

NOTE:
Again, I don’t know if this Satan is to be identified with any of the various “Satans” in 616 continuity, so I’ll just list him alone, hoping that someone else who knows more than I do can integrate his appearance here if necessary.

6th Story:
By ?

APPEARANCES:
Jesus of Nazareth, crowds

SYNOPSIS:
A brief retelling of Jesus teaching the Lord’s Prayer.

7th Story:
By ?

APPEARANCES:
John the Baptist, crowds, sheep, Herod Antipas, Herodias, soldiers, Salome, lords and captains, Jesus of Nazareth

SYNOPSIS:
A retelling of the murder of John the Baptist by Herod.

8th Story:
By ?

APPEARANCES:
Jesus of Nazareth, crowds

SYNOPSIS:
Jesus teaching about future judgment.

BIBLE TALES FOR YOUNG PEOPLE #4 (Feb 1954)

1st Story:
By ?

APPEARANCES:
Moses, Israelites, Joshua, Canaanites, spies, Rahab, army of Jericho, angel (Captain of the Army of the Lord), Jewish priests

SYNOPSIS:
A retelling of the Israelite conquest of Jericho.

2nd Story:
By ?

APPEARANCES:
Eli, Hannah, Elkanah, Samuel, Yahweh, Eli’s sons, Israelites, Philistine soldiers, Israelite soldiers, Philistines

SYNOPSIS:
A retelling of Samuel’s early years.

NOTE:
An idol of Dagon in his temple appears, but I presume that doesn’t count as an appearance of Dagon himself. Also, Eli’s sons appear but are not named here. Following the same precedent as above, I won’t presume that they have the same names as Eli’s sons in the Bible.

3rd Story:
By ?

APPEARANCES:
David, King Saul, Israelite soldiers, Philistine soldiers, Goliath, Jorah, lion, bear

FLASHBACK:
David kills a lion and bear that attack his father’s flocks.
SYNOPSIS:
A retelling of David’s defeat of Goliath.

NOTE:
In order to harmonize this story with AHA 5/2, I am positing a break between the end of page 2 and the beginning of page 3.

4th Story:
By ?

APPEARANCES:
Mary, Gabriel

SYNOPSIS:
Mary’s immediate response to Gabriel’s declaration that she will be the mother of the messiah.

5th Story:
By ?

APPEARANCES:
King David, King Solomon, Adonijah, priests, Yahweh, camels, crowd, Queen of Sheba, conspirators

SYNOPSIS:
A retelling of some of what the Bible recounts of Solomon.

6th Story:
By ?

APPEARANCES:
Jesus of Nazareth, crowds, rich man

SYNOPSIS:
Jesus tells a parable about accumulating wealth on Earth as opposed to wealth in Heaven.

NOTE:
The Angel of Death is depicted in Jesus’ parable. I haven’t listed him, since I don’t think that really counts as an appearance, but I suppose someone could argue the other way.

7th Story:
By ?

APPEARANCES:
Jesus of Nazareth, Eli

SYNOPSIS:
Jesus tells the parable of the Good Samaritan.

BIBLE TALES FOR YOUNG PEOPLE #5 (Mar 1954)

A retelling of the story of Cain and Abel from the book of Genesis.

2nd Story:
By ?

APPEARANCES:
Jews, Persians, Mordecai, Ahasuerus, Queen Esther, Haman, lords and nobles, Persian soldiers, Yahweh

SYNOPSIS:
A retelling of the book of Esther.

NOTE:
There is debate between scholars over which Persian ruler Ahasuerus is supposed to be. Because of that, I’ll just list him under “Ahasuerus.” However, he may have other appearances if he’s identified with a known figure from history (Xerxes I, for example).

3rd Story:
By ?

APPEARANCES:
Various Jews in everyday situations

SYNOPSIS:
Illustrations of a few proverbs.

NOTE:
There are no named characters, so this won’t show up in any chronologies below.

4th Story:
By ?

APPEARANCES:
Jeremiah the Prophet, Yahweh, King Jehoiakim, crowds, soldiers, Baruch, Nebuchadnezzar, Babylonian army, horses, slaves

SYNOPSIS:
Jeremiah’s calling as a prophet and the destruction of Judah by the Babylonians.

Jews, Babylonians, Belshazzar, Babylonian priests and astrologers, Daniel the Prophet, Yahweh, Mede and Persian soldiers, Darius the Mede, conspirators, lions, angel

SYNOPSIS:
A retelling of the stories of the handwriting on the wall and the lions’ den from the book of Daniel.

6th Story:
By ?

APPEARANCES:
Jesus of Nazareth

SYNOPSIS:
A brief illustrated version of some of Jesus’ teachings about being the Good Shepherd.

7th Story:
By ?

APPEARANCES:
Simon the Pharisee, Jesus of Nazareth, crowds

SYNOPSIS:
The story of Simon the Pharisee inviting Jesus to eat with him, and the sinful woman who comes in and washes his feet with her tears.

NOTE:
Some scholars argue that Simon the Pharisee is to be identified with Simon the Leper. However, this story doesn’t make such an identification, so I won’t use the other title.

8th Story:
By ?

APPEARANCES:
Jesus of Nazareth, Jewish townspeople, donkey

FLASHBACK:
Jesus turns water into wine at the wedding at Cana.
SYNOPSIS:
Jesus heals a nobleman’s son.

MYSTIC #38 (Jul 1955)

1st Story:
By ?

APPEARANCES:
Mortimer Snyder, Snyder’s family, hotel guests, Peter the Apostle, souls of humanity

SYNOPSIS:
Mort Snyder has been manning the complaint desk at a hotel for twenty years and he’s starting to crack up after hearing nothing but insults and abuse every day. He’s begun to take it out on his family at home, causing lots of domestic trouble. One day while Mort tries to sleep a visitor arrives and takes him to an office where people from all over the world are bringing complaints to St. Peter. Mort realizes that what he’s endured for 20 years is nothing compared to what Peter has been taking. When he’s returned to Earth, his entire demeanor has changed, his family is happy again, and he’s no longer in danger of losing his job.

2nd Story:
By ?

APPEARANCES:
Ralph Orlin, Ralph’s wife, Lou Collins, Mary Collins, Prof. Lobarski

SYNOPSIS:
Ralph keeps feeling like he’s being watched. When he hears that a Prof. Lobarski in town has written a new book about aliens who spy on people, Ralph contacts him. The professor tells him to wait until he feels like he’s being watched and then to clearly think a question to the aliens which they’ll perceive telepathically. He follows the professor’s advice and when he senses he’s being watched again he’s able to initiate telepathic contact with the aliens. They ask if they would be welcomed on Earth, but Ralph is concerned they might not be. The aliens thank him for his honesty and promise not to return for a long time.

3rd Story:
By ?

APPEARANCES:
Madge, Evelyn, Mr. Beckett, townspeople, Jimmy, Jed Carson, Father Time

SYNOPSIS:
Clocks stop at 3pm everywhere across the country. No one has an explanation. When farmer Jed Carson sees one his cows outside its barn, he finds an old man sleeping in the cow’s pen. The old man is surprised that he fell asleep, since that hasn’t happened in eons. When he walks away, the farmer recognizes him as Father Time, and clocks across the country resume operation.

NOTE:
This is not the Father Time from the golden age, or the character from the Land of Legends in Cap #383, but a distinct, apparently cosmic figure somehow connected to time itself.

4th Story:
By ?

APPEARANCES:
Centauri aliens, Ackt-Muur, Dr. Caleb Howard, dog, scientists

SYNOPSIS:
Dr. Caleb Howard has discovered how to construct a time drive, which will allow humans to move out into space. Aliens from Centauri learn of this and send Ackt-Muur to assassinate Howard before he can share his findings with anyone else. Ackt-Muur lands ouside of Howard’s house, but before he can complete his mission Howard’s dog kills him.

NOTE:
The Centauri aliens claim that they have ruled the Milky Way for generations. This is inconsistent with what we know about cosmic 616 continuity. I suppose we could posit that the Centauri are delusional or something, but it’s probably easier to just say that this isn’t a 616 story.

5th Story:
By ?

APPEARANCES:
Joe, restaurant patrons, Gustave Marek, Marek’s family, artist, art exhibit patrons

SYNOPSIS:
Gus Marek, looking for something to do in his spare time, buys a $1 mail-order art instruction course. When it arrives it’s only five pages long, but he decides to try following the instructions anyway. After a year, he decides to find the man who wrote the art course. He eventually tracks the man down to find that he’s a talented but poor artist, and Marek was the only person to buy a copy of his art course. The man is somewhat cynical and bitter, since no one will buy his art. Hoping to make him feel better, Marek says that he really enjoyed the course and learned a lot from it. After he leaves, the artist realizes that the man gave the name “Gus Marek,” and so he must be a hot new artist names Gustave Marek. The artist visits a new exhibition of some of Marek’s art and then runs home to try and find a copy of his art course, thinking maybe he can learn something from it.

6th Story:
By Carl Wessler

APPEARANCES:
Rosella, Jeff Morse, Emil Parkins, Sheriff Gowdy, Mrs. Appleby, Mr. Nicholson, Harriet Healy, judge, bailiff, Henry Healy, Harold, tiny winged people

SYNOPSIS:
Rosella is a failed fortune teller and she’s about to be chased out of town if her next prediction doesn’t come true. She says that she sees in her crystal ball that Emil Parkins is about to take a trip. He doesn’t believe her, since he’s planning to stay home for the next six months, but when he wakes up the next morning he finds himself and his bed fifty miles from home. Now all of Rosella’s predictions are coming true and people are paying lots of money to come see her, especially since all of her predictions are of good news (e.g., winning a contest, a son getting married, a husband being released from jail early). She is astonished at her good fortune, since she isn’t able to see the future. What she and no one else knows is that tiny winged people with unspecified powers live in her crystal ball and have decided to make all of her predictions come true.

THE LIFE OF CHRIST #1 (Feb 1993)
By Louise Simonson

APPEARANCES:
Zechariah, Ahaz, Gabriel, Elizabeth, Mary, Terah, magi, Joseph, wedding guests, donkey, camels, John the Baptist, townspeople, Roman soldiers, Aaron, Herod the Great, priests, Benjamin, Rifka Gittel, Jesus of Nazareth, Joshua, angels, sheep, doves, Simeon, Anna the Prophetess, Herodian guards, Egyptian townspeople

SYNOPSIS:
A synthesis of the Christmas stories in the gospels of Matthew and Luke.

NOTE:
It’s possible that one of the angels that appears to the shepherds is Gabriel, since they’re drawn similarly. However, I’m not sure how much that should count for, since several of the angels are drawn similarly. Since there’s no explicit identification given, I won’t assume Gabriel is there.

THE LIFE OF CHRIST: THE EASTER STORY (1993)
By Louise Simonson

APPEARANCES:
Jesus of Nazareth, crowds, Jesus’ disciples, priests, Caiaphas the High Priest, townspeople, Judas Iscariot, Peter the Apostle, Simon the Leper, Sarah, guards, James the Apostle, John the Apostle, Joshua, Annas, rooster, Sanhedrin, Joseph of Arimathea, Pontius Pilate, Lucas, Herod Antipas, Roman soldiers, Simon of Cyrene, Mary, Jacob, Gaius, Nicodemus, Mary Magdalene, Thomas the Apostle, calf, angels, donkey, Holy Spirit

SYNOPSIS:
A synthesis of the passion stories in the four gospels, as well as a tiny bit from the book of Acts.

NOTE:
Again, some scholars argue that Simon the Leper and Simon the Pharisee were the same guy, but this is debated. I’ll list the Leper separately, but it’s possible their chronologies should be merged.

The Mahdi was Muslim, not Hindu, and led a revolt in Sudan, not India. Mantlo had a terrible grasp of history.
