AF 34

Post by Col_Fury »

SWII 9 is currently placed during AF 34 for the Alpha Flight characters, but not for Wolverine; for him, SWII 9 is before AF 33. Wolverine appears throughout AF 34.

In SWII 9, the Beyonder pulls all the heroes to him, so they really could have been doing anything right before SWII 9 starts. However, Snowbird is sick through AF 34, she’s not sick in SWII 9. Also, Puck appears with Alpha Flight in SWII 9, but he’s either flying after or with Wolverine and Vindicator in AF 34. Wolverine appears in SWII 9 (and by “appears,” I mean “pops in”) with the X-Men, but he’s with Vindicator in AF 34, not the X-Men. Also, Vindicator doesn’t appear in SWII 9, even though she’s with Wolverine and Puck, who do appear in SWII 9. Also, Shaman’s already left the team by the time AF 34 happens.

Of course, SWII 9 was published the same month that Heather became Vindicator, which is the real reason she’s not in SWII 9. But the point is, SWII 9 really shouldn’t take place during AF 34. Hell, SWII 9 was published three months before AF 34.

SWII 9 needs to occur before Snowbird gets sick, before Heather becomes Vindicator and before Shaman leaves the team. AF 28 is a SWII tie-in, and AF 29 continues from that. In AF 30, Shaman leaves the team. Heather becomes Vindicator in AF 32. SWII 9 needs to be moved for the Alpha Flight characters to between AF 29-30. This means AF 33 needs to be moved to sometime after SWII 9 for the X-Men, and AF 33-34 needs to be moved to sometime after SWII 9 for Wolverine.

Also, we’re missing Lord Darkwind’s and Lady Deathstrike’s flashback appearances from AF 34.

The problem with moving AF 33-34 after SWII 9 is that the X-Men are in San Francisco from UX 202-206. SWII 9 takes place between UX 203 and UX 204. AF 33-34 are referenced in UX 205. And the X-Men are in New York in AF 33-34.

I think the solution to this is to take UX 205, which is a stand alone story (where Wolverine is in New York) out of sequence.

UX 202 (X-Men transfered by beyonder)
Secret Wars II 8
UX 203 (Secret Wars II tie in)
Secret Wars II 9
UX 204 (Nightcrawler left behind)
UX 206 (X-Men asked to leave San Fran)
Captain America @8
Alpha Flight 33
Alpha Flight 34
UX 205 (Wolverine fights Deathstrike)
UX 207 (Wolverine taken to Morlock healer)

Is there some reason the X-Men can't visit the school in New York during UX 202-206? Storm says in AF 33 that they're heading out to the opera, is there some reason why they couldn't have popped by the school before going to the opera?

Why would you want them to? It does not hurt anything to reorder. It solves your Alpha Flight order and makes since chronologically for the X-Men. The more I looked at UX 202-207, the more it seemed as if the Wolverine story was an actual insert rather than picking up on the overall arc. I'm gonna snoop around the internet to see if I can find anything in regards to this. UX 207 starts off with the X-Men taking Wolverine to the Morlock Healer for injuries he sustained in UX 205. I don't see a need to force a trip to the mansion. It seems to me they reversed the issues of UX 205 and 206.

The rest of the X-Men don't appear in UX 205 and Wolverine doesn't appear in UX 206. UX 207 is Wolverine's next appearance after UX 205, and UX 207 is the rest of the X-Men's next appearance after UX 206. And besides, reordering issues is a last ditch option for me.

Is there a reason the X-Men can't visit New York sometime after UX 203 and before UX 205?

I guess if they are flying commercial and we pretend that Nightcrawler hooked up with them in between UX 204 and UX 206 (which concludes his story from UX 204). The Blackbird is damaged in UX 202.

Moving UX 205 to the order I suggested solves all of your issues and makes the X-Men flow in a more chronological fashion. While I could not find any official author or editorial comment on other sites. Almost all those who independently reviewed UX 205 seem to think it is also out of order.

At least a week passes between UX 204 and UX 206 according to Amanda Sefton (she comments that she's been calling Nightcrawler for a week in UX 206, starting sometime after the events of UX 204). I don't see any reason why Nightcrawler can't make other appearances during that time. Sure, he says goodbye to Judith in UX 206, but that doesn't mean he's spent every minute with her from UX 204 to UX 206 (unless I'm missing some dialogue that says he did).

And why do the X-Men need to fly commercial? There are plenty of options they have to move from one side of the country to the other quickly; one way off the top of my head is Colossus' sister Magik, who can teleport people.

Hey Fury,
How about a compromise. That does not move UX 205 as a whole out of order. There is a gap of time between when Lady Deathstrike is recreated in the "Body Shop", them getting the drop on Wolverine, and where the story picks up with in UX 205 with Wolverine already severely wounded. (No need for us to make assumptions on either of our parts.)

UX 202 (X-Men transfered by beyonder)
Secret Wars II 8
UX 203 (Secret Wars II tie in)
Secret Wars II 9
UX 204 (Nightcrawler left behind)
Captain America @8
UX 205 (p.1-3) (Lady Deathstrike enhanced at the Body Shop
UX 206 (X-Men asked to leave San Fran)
Alpha Flight 33
Alpha Flight 34
UX 205 (p.4-22) (Wolverine fights Deathstrike)
UX 207 (Wolverine taken to Morlock healer)

Never mind, that does not work for Deathstrike. Damn, I thought I was on to something that would satisfy us both. I'll revert to my original suggestion.

Just to keep beating this into the ground. It does not appear that the X-Men are traveling back and forth to New York. They receive a post card from Madelyne while there in San Fran with a post mark that seems "ancient" by Rogue's account, while staying with Jessica Drew saying come to visit her and Scott while your on the "West Coast." (To me this seems as if they have not left.)

The X-Men are run out of town, because of Freedom Force. (And seem to have wanted to stay had the events not unfolded the way they did). In fact they seem to think this is unfair. Also, there is no mention of their teammate that has been gravely wounded (UX 205) and needs the assistance of the Morlock Healer to augment his healing factor.

Nightcrawler's portion reads as if he's been ignoring Amanda because he has been hanging out with Judith.

I'll concede that I can't say definitively the X-Men could not go back to New York, but the clues in these comics don't point to this being the case. My idea of reversing the order of UX 205 and UX 206 opens up a time frame for all the X-Men to be reunited in New York to appear in Alpha Flight #33 and keeps Wolverine's adventure in Captain America Annual #8 before he is in Alpha Flight #33-34 which has to come before UX 205, which is immediately followed up on in UX 207 because he is so severely injured.

My order of events has fixed your Alpha Flight problem, as well as making sense of an issue in Uncanny that seems glaringly wrong. I also cannot see any continuity problems that would cause a ripple effect by reversing this order.
