Ghost Rider XXXIV/Johnny Blaze 1977 Chronology

Post by StrayLamb »

I would like to propose an alteration to the Ghost Rider (Johnny Blaze) chronology in relation to his appearances in Champions for 1977 issues. As it stands, there are sequences out of order in his chronology..

CHMPS 7 [GR displays the power to transform at will]
PWJ2 17 (2)-FB
M/VAULT:GAM&CHMPS
PWJ2 17 (3)-FB
CHMPS 8 [GR displays the power to transform at will]
CHMPS 9 [GR displays the power to transform at will]
CHMPS 10 [GR displays the power to transform at will]
GR2 21 [GR does not yet have the power to transform at will/GR begins the arc against the Enforcer]
M/TE 13
CHMPS 11
CHMPS 12
CHMPS 13
GR2 22 [GR gains the power to transform at will in this issue]
GR2 23 [The Champions feel ill at ease about GR as they see him off after an adventure together/GR returns to his battle with the Enforcer]
GR2 24 [GR's battle with the Enforcer concludes]

I propose the chronology be altered to look like this:

*GR2 21 - MOVE TO HERE [GR does not yet have the power to transform at will/GR begins the arc against the Enforcer]
*GR2 22 - MOVE TO HERE [GR gains the power to transform at will in this issue]
CHMPS 7 [GR displays the power to transform at will]
PWJ2 17 (2)-FB
M/VAULT:GAM&CHMPS
PWJ2 17 (3)-FB
CHMPS 8 [GR displays the power to transform at will]
CHMPS 9 [GR displays the power to transform at will]
CHMPS 10 [GR displays the power to transform at will]
*GR2 23 - MOVE TO HERE [The Champions feel ill at ease about GR as they see him off after an adventure together/GR returns to his battle with the Enforcer - the scene with the Champions seems to occur immediately after CHMPS 10]
*GR2 24 - MOVE TO HERE [GR's battle with the Enforcer concludes]

*GR2 21 - MOVE FROM HERE [GR does not yet have the power to transform at will/GR begins the arc against the Enforcer]
M/TE 13
CHMPS 11
CHMPS 12
CHMPS 13
*GR2 22 - MOVE FROM HERE [GR gains the power to transform at will in this issue]
*GR2 23 - MOVE FROM HERE [The Champions feel ill at ease about GR as they see him off after an adventure together/GR returns to his battle with the Enforcer]
*GR2 24 - MOVE FROM HERE [GR's battle with the Enforcer concludes]

This will also necessitate the minor adjustment of repositioning GR2 23 to immediately after CHMPS 10 in each of the following characters chronologies.. Hercules, Black Widow, Ivan Petrovich, Angel, & Iceman.

The problem is that in Champions 12, there's a footnote that says the issue "takes place before the developments in Ghost Rider 22" and in context they seem to mean Johnny's ability to control his transformations.

Ah $#!% i hadn't read thru that far - another one of those Merry Marvel Muck-ups.

In Champions 7-10, Blaze clearly has the power to transform under his own power, and being able to do so is even a part of the plot, as in Champions #7, Johnny is about to transform into GR in order to scare some info out of Clarke. All thru those issues he continues to transform at will. Then in Champions 11-13, he's back to transforming spontaneously, and only when danger is present.

I guess that for a while there, the ability to change at will came and went, with him gradually developing more control over it. Crazy thing is, Bill Mantlo is credited as writer on all of the issues from 7 to 13. Talk about losing the plot. :sigh:
